    Nice comparison. I bought the Lumix FZ82 only a couple of months ago and have been enjoying the results. I think it opens up the opportunity to take some nice distant shots and the quality is generally very good especially compared to a smartphone like you pointed out. Saves carrying around a number of heavy lenses with a DSLR. I hope the bridge cameras have a future as the technology going into them is only improving with time. I’ll be hanging onto mine for the foreseeable future.

      I have a Nikon dslr but it rarely goes out with me - if I have something specific to photograph I may take it. For travelling though, a bridge camera does just fine, the fz82 or it's bigger brother the fz1000. Thanks for watching.

      I have a Nikon 5300 with a couple of lenses although like you it’s not getting so much use these days. It’s nice to have the flexibility of the super zoom lense with the LUMIX and I find it nice a light in comparison. I do have an Olympus pen which I enjoy when I want something ultra light to just carry around and concentrate on Landscapes. The compact size is also good for family snaps as it’s less intrusive. Enjoying the content..Mark

    Useful. I borrowed one from a friend and at 1200mm I could make out the vase of flowers on the windowsill of a house across a valley about 400m away…….he used it on safari and recently in Italy and had good shots from both trips. It’s light, it’s cheap, it has massive reach and a fairly sharp lens. Bit of a hidden gem. And of course it does RAW for better post processing and maximising the image quality.

    Good video. I bought FZ82 2 years ago but it got wet in a river incident so I bought another one early last year. I've been very impressed and happy with this camera. I use it for macro photography along with the Raynox Dcr 250 (thanks to your video). I wish it had a articulated screen and a built-in ND like my Canon G16. Thanks for watching. Certainly modern phones are having their own pixel war at the moment, and often the results are images that look oversharpened and HDR heavy. At the end of the day, too many pixels on a small sensor isn't good for image quality IMO.
      Sadly I can't see Panasonic releasing any more bridge cameras. I think the range now consists of the FZ330, FZ1000ii and the FZ2000. They seem to be concentrating their efforts on the m4/3 and full frame cameras.

    Depends on the person and the person's needs. I actually just took pictures of a hummingbird in my yard a few hours ago and reviewing the footage now. What is beyond strange to me is that the videos have better frames than the still photos. I just bought one in the last holiday season about 6 months ago, and I am happy with it because I'm doing more video than photos. I actually use it for my channel now and I like the video footage I get. I only paid like $283 brand new (holiday season deal). The next step up would be a lot more, and cameras with interchangeable lenses aren't worth it because: 1) the cost would be a lot more for better pictures only under some circumstances & 2) If I were to invest a multiple times more for an interchangeable system, I would have to really know what I am getting into, so knowing what system to get would be quite a task itself. Lots of people buy systems and invest a lot of money, then aren't happy with what they bought. I will say one thing, with a small sensor, you will notice the difference between the seasons! During winter, even with the sun out, there isn't enough light to get great shots. During the summer it is a lot brighter (people may not really notice it). So the camera is a lot more fun in the summer when it is much brighter out. Not all blue skies produce the same amount of light...another reason to not like winter.

      @AndrewWaltonPhotography  Před rokem

      I agree the FZ82 does like great light, one reason I do like to take it when I travel to sunny places. I also agree that some folks swap systems far too often, I think this is a lot to do with marketing of new cameras, you really need to get the most out of your existing gear before you move one. You can achieve some great images with this camera and learn how to use a camera properly without spending a fortune.

    Great video Andrew. What a great shame it would be if the main brands stop making affordable bridge cameras. However you can see why the average punter just uses their mobile as for most snapshots or basic landscapes as they can now produce terrific results (and easily uploaded to social media of course!). But I do wonder if you set the FZ80 to the "Vivid" mode whether its results would be more comparable to those the phones give. Still and all I absolutely love my FZ80 and its versatility and compactness. I am still learning how to get the best images out of it. I am going to experiment with using fill flash in low light situations to see if that boosts my image results. Cannot do these little tweaks on a mobile.

      @AndrewWaltonPhotography  Před rokem

      Thanks for watching Dennis, I think the cameras will continue as long as they sell in enough numbers. I noticed Nikon has reduced the number of bridge cameras it has offered quite drastically in the last few years. I still think there is a market for cameras, Sony seems to think so, too, as they still offer entry-level compacts, something other brands have given up on. Panasonic may be wise to hang on in there, too, with the bridge models.

  • @Robert-Bishop
    @Robert-Bishop Před rokem +1

    I think one of the main problems when people compare cameras to phones is a lack of understanding that phones are also editing your image for you! If people don't mind that loss of control, then a smartphone camera might be more useful to them, although phones still can't compete with telephoto zoom lenses when it comes to resolution at long focal lengths (as you demonstrated in your video). I hope you still get some use out of your FZ82 though, because it has served you very well over the course of your CZcams channel.

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography

      Thanks for watching Robert. The FZ82 is still a very popular camera on the channel, and I think still a popular seller for Panasonic, although they have their eye firmly focused on the full frame market now. I hope to get some other videos out of it, it is always handy for travel and wildlife although I am thinking of trying to challenge myself with an attempt at astrophotography using the FZ82 - on paper it shouldn't work. Phones are great for snaps, perhaps the ultimate point and shoot, but they're quickly found out when asked to do something out of their comfort zone.

    Yeah that rock shot says it all really. For me it has always been the case that the smartphone has only one massive win over 'proper' cameras. You (tend to) always have them with you, they are I suppose, the Kodak-it or Polaroid-Pronto of the day. But camera manufacturers need to get smart quickly. The bottom end is dropping out of the market and as you've mentioned in the past to me, that will become a barrier to photographers of the future.

    I am loving learning with the FZ82. A couple of months ago I paid £160 for a brand new one on marketplace 😀 I still have a lot to learn but after watching videos and attending a photography class I am more confident in trying different settings. I have booked 2 other photography classes, 1 of which is at a bird of prey centre and I can't wait! I'm practicing in S mode with the sparrows in the garden trying to get in flight shots, I try to keep ISO down and shoot in burst mode but pics not always successful 😐they're too quick for me so if you've got any tips please let me know. My other passion is fast planes and hope to one day get some decent shots on the Mach Loop! PS I can't afford anything else so the FZ82 will have to do although I'd love a Sony RX10 iv maybe 1 day 😀

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography
      @AndrewWaltonPhotography  Před rokem

      Kath, you can always try 4k photo for the birds in flight. It does lower the megapixels of the image to around 8mp, but you never miss a shot as you are in effect extracting a jpeg from the video. You can raise the ISO slightly to around ISO before it gets really noticeable. With the aeroplanes you might not need such a high shutter speed as you can pan with the plane as it moves. This will give you a sharp image of the plane and a blurred background giving the illusion of speed. Its easy to practice, you just need to learn by photographing cyclists or cars as the pass by.

  • @paulkennedycreativemedia

    It is very much what ya like and what ya don’t like when it comes to the images. But I think the camera will always have that wee bit extra to give. I still use my Nikon D7000 and it’s well over 10years.

      Phones are pretty much there with these types of cameras at wide angle. It's the distortion in the images when using the digital zoom that phones don't seem to have quite cracked yet. Samsung got caught using AI with moon shots on the S22 Ultra (which was a bit naughty) to fill in the detail that the phone couldn't possible capture. The images it used would have had to have been taken on a real camera 😀 It's all down to the laws of physics but as AI gets better who knows where we will end up. Thanks for watching Paul, I hope you are doing well.

  • @phillipandrew87
    @phillipandrew87 Před rokem +2

    I'm still using a Google Pixel 2. It came out in 2017, and it took better pictures than the FZ82 then and still now (especially with an modded GCam, Google's camera app, which can give you hdr modes from up to a pixel 6). Almost as good as lumix lx10 (like the FZ82 with a 1 inch sensor but without the zoom), which makes sense given that Google's computational photography techniques are suppose to give the camera (with a smaller sensor than the FZ82) image quality equivalent to a camera with a sensor 9 times its size. Most smartphones use similar techniques. Newer ones of course have even larger sensors so the performance should be even better.
    As you pointed out though, Andrew, a big down side of smartphones is that they don't have the reach, or anywhere near, of the FZ82. Many phones, besides Samsung's latest ones, still output only 12MP photos, so you're not able to crop as much.
    Anyway, I said my Pixel 2 takes better photos than the FZ82, but that's sort of a lie. It's true in many situations, but it really depends on what I'm shooting and how it's lit. If the subject fills the frame, or even if the lighting is just right, I find the FZ82 can win out. That's before introducing zoom. I took some bird photos the other day at about the 650mm equivalent focal length and I thought they looked better than anything my phone could produce even if I was at close range with the phone. They looked more natural too.
    Google of course--and I'm sure Samsung has their own algorithm--uses computational photography to produce HDR images. These are the default images for the Pixel phones, as in you cannot turn it off. By the time you've hit the shutter button, the phone has already taken nine images, and combined them with the image you just took (when you hit the shutter) to produce a final tone mapped image with dramatically reduced noise and increased dynamic range.
    It's completely different than the hdr mode on the fz82, which I believe takes three photos, one at normal exposure, one under, and one over exposed.
    I think Google's algorithm, especially with what I've seen on the latest pixel phones, produces some very natural and beautiful results (Samsung's phones likewise do).
    It's a real shame they're not going to be making this line of bridge cameras anymore because I'd like to see updated ones (and they can even use the same sensors) introducing some of the computational photography techniques found in the phones. I do not believe they'd have to sacrifice creativity of the photographer to do so, as with the latest Pixel phones you could still lower the exposure or increase the exposure as you see fit, to just name two things. Hell they could even have it in its own mode.
    But I believe the noise reduction possibilities and much increased dynamic range could very much benefit a camera, any camera really, but especially a camera like the FZ82.

      Thanks for your very considered reply. I agree if Lumix were to develop a replacement camera with all the technologies available today in phones it would be fantastic but maybe too much competition for their m4/3 and Full Frame offerings. Phones seem to be heading in one direction (computation/AI) and camera manufacturers in the other (bigger sensor, mirrorless etc) but nobody seems to be asking what the beginner or budget photographer wants.

  • @stevenuttley
    @stevenuttley Před 6 měsíci +1

    Great video. Thanks for producing it. Smartphones are great but neither a smartphone nor a system camera can adequately replace a bridge camera. To get the same facility with a system camera you'd need a wallet and back busting set of extra lenses and for what? In most conditions the images are hard to tell apart. In extreme conditions like low light etc yes the larger sensor will give you more options and more information to post process but at what trade off? I personally don't think I could ever upgrade to a system camera because I don't have the physical capacity to lug an equivalent set of lenses around (and just one low multiple zoom would not be an equivalent package). Good quality compact and bridge cameras are perfectly capable of producing professional images that will be accepted for stock sites etc in decent conditions. if all the major makers completely abandon the bridge sector that will be very unfortunate.

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography
      @AndrewWaltonPhotography  Před 6 měsíci

      I agree, Steven. I own a dslr, and more often than not, it is the bridge cameras that I pick up. The FZ1000 I have is pretty hard to distinguish from the results I get with my crop sensor Nikon. I shoot with a full frame Sony at work, and that is in a different league, but so are the costs of the body and the glass for it. It's definitely not something I could afford out of my own pocket.
      It looks as if Nikon have killed off the P1000 so that's another bridge camera that's become extinct.

      Chargers are easily found on Amazon, usually with a couple of batteries.

      @@AndrewWaltonPhotography it actually chargers right through the USB port! That isn't a feature I expected from a seven year old point and shoot camera!!!

      @CryptoJones Yes, the camera comes with a wall charger similar to a phone charger.

    For me I just wanna grab a real camera even I also use a iphone pro for iphone photography , it’s still different and difficult to get the same results due of course by their sensor sizes .

      I know what you mean. A real camera always seems a much better option than a phone, although the image quality is much improved in modern phones I'd rather have a camera.

    I have the FZ82's older brother the FZ72 and have no intention of getting rid, compared with my Pixel 8 (which is one of best image snappers) it's no contest for a quick photo but for a zoom there isn't a phone that can get the same clarity. You made me laugh when you said cheap camera's from China...you do realise that all camera's are made in China, even the high end gear the internals are made over there (every chip, sensor, motherboard etc etc). Anyway I'm keeping mine along with it's 1.7 teleconvertor (which apparently is worth more than the camera itself so I've been told by people that want to buy it).

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography
      @AndrewWaltonPhotography  Před 9 dny +1

      Yes, indeed, everything is made in China these days. It depends on how much 'supervision' they are given regarding quality control. However, most domestic products are churned out in volume and aren't up to the same standards.
      The 1.7x teleconvertor is indeed very desirable - I have been on the lookout for a cheap used one, but it seems they don't exist.

      @@AndrewWaltonPhotography I'll be honest I got a bargain with mine, I was saving up for the FZ82 and on Gumtree a seller was going to do me a deal for the FZ82 for £150 but changed her mind, there was another seller that had the FZ72 with 2 spare batteries, case, tripod the 1.7 tele (official one) with the lens adaptor all for £130. Needless to say it was worth losing a few functions for that bargain. I noticed as well that camera companies have abandoned with a passion anything to do with bridge cameras which is a shame because the potential is massive especially if they started putting larger sensors in but that seemed to cap out with the 1" sensor on the FZ2500,1000 & 1000II. The only other thing I wished I had was the focus stacking but I tend to do that on the computer anyway. I don't know if you know though Panasonic released an updated version of the FZ82 last month (FZ82D) but comparing the specs it certainly doesn't seem worth it when the changes aren't significant enough to warrant the release. All the best from here in Yorkshire.

      @polisheverything1970 Yeah, I did a video on the upgrades to the FZ82, but like you, if I have a working camera, why upgrade. I also have a fz1000, which is a great camera.

    I dislike phone cameras for anything other than documentation or showing friends or family a photo of something I’ve done. They have awful ergonomics for photography. When I have wondered out the house and without a camera and tried taking any more than 20 photos, I have instantly regretted it. I don’t think age and spec has as big impact as people say it does. It is always important to remember that people were taking good photos 100 years ago with cameras that could do a fraction of what modern cameras can do. So age and spec is only part of the story. My favourite camera is an Olympus E1 which has amazing ergonomics but has a sensor a fraction of the megapixels of my phone. I know which one I’d rather shoot with.

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography
      @AndrewWaltonPhotography  Před rokem

      I find my phone handy but like you would rather shoot with a camera. Sadly we are running against the tide as phones advance. The importance of megapixels is just a marketing exercise, sensor size is more important.

      The camera shoots pretty good video. The zoom is great if you need it. If you aren't bothered about the zoom range then a pre owned micro4/3rds camera or a Sony zv might suit you better as the sensor size is larger.

    I bought this camera last year as my fuji camera was on its way out. I thought I was going to be buying a great camera with the reviews I had read I should never had read them. The camera to me is useless I have been using cameras for over 50 years but this FZ82 as got to be the worse camera I have ever bought. Even my mates won't touch the camera they say it should have been scrapped. I am losing my vision so my photography is coming to an end, but this FZ82 camera won't be passed on it will be crushed along with all my other camera's.

    I think for beginners its good but its way to overpriced... Its worth maybe 130 hucks but for 300 bucks you can get a used sony a6000 with a decent lens which is way better

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography
      @AndrewWaltonPhotography  Před 4 měsíci

      Not everyone likes buying used or wants a camera with a separate lens, even if that is what they graduate to eventually. The comparison in this video was really to compare it to a smartphone and see if it was a better choice. Panasonic has sadly made that choice for us as the FZ82 is now history, discontinued, and replaced by the even more expensive FZ330.

    FZ70-72, FZ80+ will ALWAYS be better than a smart phone.

  • @AndrewHamiltonPhotography

    Very interesting Andrew - love my smartphone for everyday use as it’s most notably pocket size unlike any other camera. Easy to grab point and shoot - we were in the Lake for a family long weekend recently and some of the images my son took on his smartphone were as good as those from my DSLR! However reach is a huge factor. At the Ataturk stadium for the Champs League final the images and video on my phone were very poor when zoomed right In but I wasn’t taking a DSLR Bridge Compact or any other camera to that venue so it’s needs must sometimes. As they say the best camera is the one you have with you !

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography
      @AndrewWaltonPhotography  Před rokem +1

      Reach is definitely the domain of cameras, it may be what saves them in the end. Cheers for watching Andrew, I carry my s22 everyday and often use it for snaps. On holiday I probably shot less with the cameras than on any other trip because I snapped with the phone.
