  • In this recording, Archimandrite Athanasios Mytilinaios (1927-2006), answers the question: "How can one know if he has an aptitude to become a monk?” "It needs research, a lot of attention and objectivity in the search of ourselves... It is an issue of love for Christ. You might say, can't a married man love Christ much? Sure! But the one who wants to remain unmarried is fulfilled, or he ought to be fulfilled, by great love [for Christ]. I did not say faith, I said love. If you love Christ a lot, then you occupy yourself with Him, then everything fills your heart, and then you can stay unmarried."

The orthodox version of Christianity is the original and true form of christianity that Jesus taught us when he came to earth, and you can feel God’s grace through the holy sacraments in this church after baptism , repentance-confession and holy communion in the orthodox christian church through the grace of the apostles that was transferred from generation to generation to what we have today as the orthodox christian priests, something that completely changes your life and turns you into a happier person with a meaningful life and also saves you by strengthening your bond with God. You can also watch the miracle of the holy fire that does not burn that happens every year, I suggest you get baptised and catechised, study the orthodox bible , go at an orthodox christian church near you, receive the holy spirit and live a spiritual life through the church’s sacraments like confession to the priest and holy communion (only after baptism) and God will protect you, in this life, and the next, the eternal one, 😊may God Bless you my friend! ☦️🙏

I've had a lot of pinings for monkhood over the years, even if only sparingly, but admittedly I don't want to rush into things. I'm still only an enquirer and not yet catechized (I started attending church and singing in the choir around 5 months ago) and everyone I've spoken to has said there's no point in rushing any big decisions. I've been encouraged to visit the Essex Monastery by most of my parish, so I think that should be my first step. I wish everyone else all the best on their journey, regardless of whether that leads to a fruitful marriage, or fruitful celibacy. Lord have mercy on us.

So many people want to become monks... so many people who want a great many things... wealth, love, even solitude. So many wants, but not a single person says I wish I could give, give myself to a partner, give money to the poor, give myself to my community, or even better, or wishes to give themselves to God. A wish, perhaps, pray to such things and leave this self-seeking behavior behind us?

cant compare wanting to be a monk, or clergy, or something like that to a normal desire.
      thats wanting to give
what is there to be gained in being a simple servant
i get what youre saying if youre saying we shouldnt choose what we do but do what is required of us, many of us have barely any family and no community many many many people are like this, there is nothing required of me directly, i have no role, therefore i have no purpose and i am stumbling around in the cold dark
how is it self seeking to want to serve and to have a purpose?
how does it make sense to go to the man who has no role and tell him he is selfish for wanting a role? hypocritical, for the man who was born and gifted that, for the man who had a path to follow laid out for him
edit: i dont know what my purpose is, im just doing meaningless work for a meaningless reason, but the reason many people come to Orthodoxy is because it is harder, is because it requires more effort, is because its not just another product to consume. i think the larpers are great as long as they actually try do the things they like to larp as.

Regardless of whether we find a worldly kind of purpose (I.e. vocational calling) we as orthodox Christian’s are called to be a nation of priests throughout the world, the salt of the earth that fertilizes the barren lands, we are called to be antennas of prayer that call the Spirit of God and grace into our world. It’s no small matter to make intercessory prayers for those around us, whether they’re orthodox or not. How God may work in their lives is not always clear, but that the grace of God may touch them, this is what we wish for. Of course, we must make supplications of repentance for ourselves first (as even the priests of the Old Testament would have to make sin offerings for themselves before making offerings for Israel)

I'm currently 22 and i've had the desire to be alone in order to know Christ better since i've started reading the Bible for the first time after my baptism. I have that desire to become a monk, but i have two big issues: lust and the desire to have money in order to manage my life. I say it because i've made my research on the monastic orthodox order, and it implies vows of poverty. The apostle Paul said that if you want to stay single, be single, and that for those who can't control themselves, to marry a woman, but i still want to become a monk. And i'm not against having kids, no, if i have some, i will raise them into the orthodox christian faith, even if i'm not orthodox yet, but i still want to become a monk, so can someone give me some advice on what i should do? Thanks

In India orthodox monks have families which support them . They are frequently visiting parishes and women find it attractive to go for confession to them rather than their own vicar. Monks r not totally cutoff. I wouldn't say the same for nuns .. their life is much more hard. I think this chosing path of suffering for salvation is more Buddhist than christian.. Though some portions in the bible suggest suffering. Maybe its when God calls you directly and gives u a job ... There the suffering is part of the mission.. But this practice of self declared isolation and suffering maynot be salvific ..it is just a lifestyle.. Pls dont be offended with my words .. im just saying my opinon .
