1 loss doesn't kill a wrestler. Ilja is coming off a year long NXT Title reign and is already put in place to be a staple on Raw. My theory is that we will get Gunther vs Ilja either at Bash or Clash. That match in inevitable and will be in the top 5 matches of this year.
Top 5? I'd argue that it has the potential to be match of the year and a match I'd recommend to non-wrestling fans who say that wrestling is fake and that no one gets hurt.

Ilja has that Bret Hart-esque ability that he makes every opponent look just as great as he is. Jey matches usually devolve into a superkick fest, but that one last night was actually pretty good.

Definitely want to see him against the general gunther.

I think my main issue is how he lost. It’s not that Ilja lost a match on the main roster, it’s that he lost to Jey Uso, a filler for Drew because of his injury.

I kinda knew that Hunter wouldn't pull the trigger on Gunther vs Draganov for a throw-away match on Raw since this is a PPV level match not a your weekly show match¹ and the match will/would probably happen on Bash At Berlin

It’s not about them not wanting Gunther vs Ilja on a random raw. It’s about the way he lost to Jey, Jey! Jey is over but his in ring work in singles matches is 🤮and Ilja lost clean. If there was some sort of distraction or a dusty finish, that would’ve been much better but losing clean to Jey. Jey’s arsenal is:- Superkick, Samoan Drop, Spear, Splash. The End. Jey Uso is over but he sucks when the bell rings. Ilja losing to a spear and a splash that’s it. Nah man.

My idea towards Gunther vs Ilja Dragunov in NXT UK championship match is that this were their Rookie Years and were evenly matched for this reason. And since Jey is an experienced Superstar and Ilja Dragunov has recently started in the Main Roster he would definitely not have the experience to keep up with him especially when the dude was going toe to toe with Roman Reigns.
Now y'all saying what about Ricochet he is also a Superstar. first of, Ricochet's Opponents hasn't been as strong as Jey's opponents. Both Jey and Ricochet lost to Gunther but Jey legitimately has more credible reason to beat Ilja than Ricochet imo.

I'm excited for this class of NXT wrestlers coming up and becoming WHC/WWE champions. People will say they're too small, but Ilja, Melo, Pete Dunne, maybe even Tyler Bate as a wildcard just need to show people what they can do. You don't need to be 6' + to be world champion anymore. You haven't since the late 90's. Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, Rey Mysterio and Chris Jericho proved this.

Us, american live audiences, don't deserve this match. I prefer it at an out of country event. Or a big 4 event. Raw audiences are hit or miss at reactions, they could have killed this 'big fight feel' match.

Being coronated as the winner of King of the Ring cements your rising popularity. WWE doesn't have a major villain right now. Getting Gunther struggle and lose to Dragonov is not a good option, especially when Dragonov is very unknown to casual fans.
The way Dragonov do his 619 unto the ropes to setup a winding clothesline is not getting a pop yet on the audience. That by itself tells you they need to build Dragonov and wholeheartedly be accepted by casual audience.
I just don't like that Ricochet couldn't catch a bigger persona or identity. He's still a flippy guy. I thought last year he was going for an Andrew Tate persona then Logan Paul showed up.

Ilja isn't "Buried" even typing that word makes me cringe but no he's good as of right now. In that match he had with Jey Uso you could tell he was mainly in control, and he looked strong. Plus he's only lost 1 match rn on the main roster and as you said give it a year. Hes talented and for sure main event/ championship material just not yet, he needs to marinate rn and his time will come. Also to touch on Gunther Vs Ilja, if they were to put that match together next monday on raw it wouldn't hit as much as it will in the future with build up. yes they have their past but most people like you said seen Ilja but they don't know Ilja. so more build up moving forward to that match sometime in the near future will hit.
