- This is not your typical Queen song. Tie Your Mother Down was more confusing than it should have been. I blame being exhausted for the confusion lol.

OMG! He's asking his girlfriend to tie her mom down and kick her daddy out and take her little brother "swimming with a brick" (that one always made me laugh!) so he could be alone with her without interruptions! Not that difficult of a concept people! đ€Ł
Not that hard to understand youâd think, right? JeezâŠ
Thank God you explained. Almost pulled my hair out of my head. Sheese.
...a repair guy. đ
Really guys!! Really??? no disrespect but cmon!! is so obvious what the song is about..! a guy trying to hook up with his girlfriend, and the parents are getting on his way!! may be if you guus don't understand some of the songs , should do song facts!!
Two things to understand here, 1. The dude was dense and a downer and was looking for an opportunity to bash the song đ€ą 2. CZcams reaction video are a way of gaining publicity for yourself, to bring attention to the groups, to give advertisers air time and to collect money from youtube for having advertisers on the channel. The more views a youtube reactor gets.... the more money CZcams pays them. I have a friend who was av reacter but because she was a maga consetvative and expressed her views...she had her advertising cut offđ€ąđĄđđ. She was discriminated against. CZcams is big tech owned and funded (big tech means foriegn and corpotate) and special interest group sponsoredđ€ą
No, he's a guy trying to get his high school girlfriend to give it up to him; her parents are standing in the way. Common theme of songs back in the '70s!
I'm not sure how anyone could come up w/ another meaning! Leave it to them to come up w/ a sexual assault/rape angleđ I'm gonna stop watching these, it's just too painful
Yup, seems obvious to me, LoL But Im a 70's dude
@@gizzy2403 Hope that you didn't watch a reaction to 'Pain is so Close to Pleasure' by Queen... đđđ
Sometimes people take a title too literally, then try to somehow apply it to the meaning of the song. The explanation is clear as day in the rest of the lyrics.
@@LeroyBrown84 oh geez, that would be brutal!đ
So, what does it all mean? It all comes back to a story that May had thought of about a young boy who is in love with a girl. In the story, the boy desperately wants to date this girl and get to know her better, yet his every move is thwarted by the girlâs parents. This is where the lyrics, tie your mother down, came from. It was all about a girl who has an overbearing mother. The mother doesnât approve of the boy. While the lyrics were never meant in a literal sense, it was more out of the frustration that virtually every young man feels when he starts dating the woman of his dreams, only to find out that mother doesnât approve and wonât allow her daughter to have anything to do with him. The desire to tie her down, or get her out of the way temporarily, is where this song stemmed from. May has always been quick to point out that it was all figurative and written in a sort of fairytale manner, but nevertheless, this was the inspiration for the song. He also admits that even he didnât fully understand the inspiration when the words first popped into his head. He just knew they were there and he could hear that riff playing in his head as clearly as if he were listening to it on the radio. It took him a while to work through it all, and heâs always been quite open about that fact
thank gawd its not about asking to rape your mother,,, lol Lex kills me ..
I thought the inspiration came from the fact that, in the past, drag Queen's would use duct tape or equivalent, to tape their "annoying floppy-dangler" back under so as to conceal it from their perspective audience....? So Tie Your Mother Down being a euphemism
Your understanding of the song is basically how I interpret it. "I can't understand it. I'm just a peaceful guy"
@@frankmcbride7051 I stole it from the internet. :)
@@frankmcbride7051 peace/piece loving guy
People don't realize Queen could rock your ass off at any given moment. Brian May was a top tier guitarist. Their first album rocked.
Correction, Brian May is a top tier guitarist. :)
I got 3 words for those people...Stone Cold Crazy :-P
Best tone in the biz
lol
theres some so called Queen fans that know Queen is a rock band.
Brian is a genius, and I mean an absolute scientific genius....over and above a musical genius. He's a real scientist.
Remember. Everyone in Queen wrote. Not all lyrics are by Freddie, as is the case in this song. Additionally, as some other people have pointed out, it's about a boyfriend asking his girlfriend to get rid of her family so they quit spoiling their fun.
That's my interpretation, as well.
LoL, yeah, not sure how Lex arrived at the MILF interpretation. This is what can happen when you don't pay much attention to the lyrics and fixate on a main line or two ;)
@@kdm71291 thats everyones interpretation, except Brad & Lex!
@@RandomPunterUK Hahahahaha!!
@@RandomPunterUK lol lol lol
The guy wants to get down with his girfriend. Her familiy are standing in the way.
Written by Brian May.
Exactly! Plain and simple!
So close. He is trying to take a girl out, but her overbearing mother keeps stopping him.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking too, until "give me every inch of your love" and then I remember that Freddie was gay.
edit: Oh, written by Brian May so maybe not literal on that part.
@@douglasfrantzen3011 freddie was bi. also why wouldn't that line work if he was gay?
@@FirstnameLastname-nd9wx I was responding to Hal that said the song was about taking a GIRL out. That line seems to work better for male bits.
@@douglasfrantzen3011 Thinking too much here! Just Freddie throwing in a sexy Robert Plant line in homage, and because he was bi, but still Brian May wrote the song!
Probably my favorite Queen song, because it doesn't get overplayed, like some do. I really like Brian May's guitar work in this.. It's a high school love song, trying to get rid of the girls 'rents so he can get some. Most times on the radio they skipped the first thirty seconds of intro. Too bad, it sets a mood.
also my favorite song, and from my favorite Album "a Day at the races"
Songs don't always have to have a deeper meaning, sometimes it's just about the feeling.
Not with these two. Never
Yeah, I feel like this song is pretty upfront about it's meaning, lol.
The only deeper meaning is "I'm a ''peace loving" guy, and that's not deep, just sort of a 70s cheap play on words!
Tie her down means keep her busy , doesnt mean tie her down literally , Get her involved in something else , we had slang that meant different things, we didnt even think of the crazy stuff people think today or do, We had an innocent meaning
Oh so correct. you could have said more of these truths. Simpler days, then, they gave us a pleasant lifestyle to live life.
Saw Queen in Dallas in the early 80's and they opened a 3 hour concert with this song. I don't know how you can listen to this song and NOT bang your head. A full on Rocker. "Take your little brother swimming with a brick that's alright!" lol.
Brian May wrote it, but there was a time that he stopped singing that part of the song, or whoever was singing the song (about taking the little brother swimming with the brick) for fear of inspiring some sick young person from actually following that advice--just an abundance of precaution. He is a worrier, and a father, with a lot of anxiety and bouts of clinical depression, but a hell of a guitarist and songwriter! So envious that you saw them in the early 80s!! I always thought this song was hilarious, due to Brian's wit, and great fun due to his guitar! How Brian and Lex don't get this, "I don't know..."
@@mollyhall2954 Lol. Seems obvious to me to but... different generation and all. I wish you could've seen it too. No front band just them for 3 hours. There was a runway leading to a stage in the middle of the audience that Freddie would strut down and sing to us. The light set over the stage was in the shape of a giant crown. The sound mix was perfect. A great night.
@@jz55859 I sounds so Perfect!! I've been married almost 45 years to my musician husband but I can't forgive him for seeing Queen in the 70s when he was in Boston and I was in SC--he appreciated them, but not the way I would now! lol I wish Brad and Lex would watch enough Queen concert videos to fall in love with the band, the voices and the show and not worry about meanings or genre for a long time!
@@mollyhall2954 Yes. Sometimes the analysis of the meaning falls short - especially when they are trying to do it one verse into the song. Also, lacking the cultural touchstones and buzzwords of the time makes the task even more difficult.
My favorite Queen song. It's such a badass riff.
It's the anthem of the 17-year-old boy wanting his high school girlfriend to get rid of her parents for the night...tie momma down and lock daddy out of doors - so they can get it on.
Foo fighters doing this live with Taylor singing and Roger Taylor on drums and Brian May playing guitar with Dave grinning like a big kid is one of my favourite live performances
I love that version.
I love it, too!
Poor Brad .. misses the beautiful entire forest for one tree he canât identify haha
Brad overthinks everything. Some songs just want to rock out - like this.
Tie Your Mother Down is one of the, if not THE, best Queen songs.
Total rock'n'roll.
Yep this one 7 Sea's and Killer Queen. Top 3 for me.
Best guitar riff. One of my favorite Queen songs.
I heard one of the band say in an interview the "tie your mother down" was sung to mean cut the strings of childhood to use to tie your mother into a less controlling position over you then go out & have fun.
Yay!! This one and "You're My Best Friend" are my favorites of Queen's that nobody had reacted to yet!
My fav band of all time!!!
Guys you should make more reactions for Queen. Yes, they have a lot of songs from different genres but all of them are so brilliant
I used to think I was a Brad, carefully analyzing the words to each song, but after watching this channel I realize I am a Lex... Basically, If I enjoy the groove, I enjoy the song.
One of Queen's heaviest songs and that's why it's my favorite of theirs..
FINALLY SOMEONE ACKNOWLEDGES THIS SONG!!!! THANK YOU!
A cover band I was played this song every gig...it was a blast to play and was one of my favorites.
When this song first came out, some journalist described the lyrics as 'Sheer bloody poetry'.
And yeah, as others have pointed out, the song's really about a guy wanting to date a girl, but her parents keep getting in the way.
So glad this is the album version of the song, which has the added theatrical opening and Brian May playing a shepherd's tone on his guitar, before the hard-hitting riff kicks in.
The whole album - A Day at the Races - is awesome.
Hahaha. I love you guys!! You kill me!!
Now you need to see them perform this live at Wembley fire đ„ đ„
Brian May got the inspiration for this song while at the Teide Observatory on Tenerife working on his dissertation. He woke up one night and couldn't get back to sleep. So he got up and began playing his guitar and this tune just evolved. Since it had no lyrics, he would sing nonsense words and phrases as he played. That's where the line, "tie your mother down" came from.
When Brian returned to the studio with the rest of the band, he played it for the band. as a possible new song for them. While he strummed the melody, Brian sort of subconsciously sang the lyrics "tie your mother down" along with it. Oddly, Freddie thought the line was amusing and encouraged him to write the lyrics around that line.
The song is written from the perspective of a young, (sexually) frustrated teenager who wants some "alone time" with his girl.
When asked why "tie your mother down"? Freddie liked to say, " Actually, I dunno why. it was written by Brian. Maybe he was in one of his vicious moods. I think he's trying to outdo me after 'Death On Two Legs' actually."
Lex either hits the nail on the head OR she seems like she is listening from another world đđđ
Brian was asked and replied, at least once, that this was a favorite of his own riffs because every time he played it people jumped up and screamed and danced! He was planning to change the words "tie your mother down" but Freddie convinced him to keep that kinky-sounding phrase, though the song is just about high school sweethearts being kept apart and the guy is saying to the girl, get your family out of the way because I'm not waiting anymore! (no repairmen, no plans on sex with the mother, ewww! lol, lol but Lex has imagination!) She loved the riff from the get go, so yay!! We just want Brad to listen to the riff and enjoy that! Think after that! lol
Itâs a total head swirl. Gotta love Queenâs breadth of song style. Amazing. Legendary. Can you imagine what they would be doing today if Freddie were alive?!?
It's hilarious watching you guys have literally the exact same conversations that people had back then, nobody really knew how to take Queen. Lol
Rolling Stones's ''reviewer" Dave Marsh made it all worse by writing terrible, inaccurate things about Queen's first album, and proudly showing his homophobia by calling them ''creeps."
đ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł this was great!!! I would love to see you guys react to reading comments and seeing what the song really means. That was super fun đ great reaction
Early on in my Queen rabbithole deepdive I had heard Tie your mother down but never really thought much of it to me it was just a song
But now I truly believe this song has one of the best intro's in all of rock music I love how long and sort of relaxing the song is in the start and then it just comes at you. Amazing song
Awesome song and group both time's I seen them they opened up with this tuneâïž
You need to see the live version - Wembley 1986 - the crowd reaction is incredible
The song is in the spirit of a long standing Rock trope about rebelling against your parents and rocking anyway ( your mama don't dance etc). Half of the song is just him complaining about being at home and all the fighting etc.
In this particular case, I'm soooo glad you did a lyric video!!! I never realized what he was telling her to do. He wants some lovin'. Mom hates him, dad wants his head and little brother keeps hovering around. So he tells her to kick her dad out, drown her brother with a brick tied to his leg (in the verse just before the lead section), and tie her mother down so he can get some sweet lovin' tonight....Wow, that's messed up but what great, groovy and rocking music it is set to....đ€Łđ€Ł
I shouldn't laugh at that, but I can't help it.....đđł
You guys should react to Sheer Heart Attack (the song, not the album) and Brighton Rock to see where many Thrash Metal musicians got their influences from. đ
Wow. This was from the first Queen album I ever bought. I think I was still in HS. Great song
hahahahahaha I've only ever seen this live at the Wembley 1986 concert (maybe other concerts too but I've forgotten)... but never the studio version. It's so funny that the intro sounds like you're going to church!.
Personally, I like this WAY MORE LIVE, it's so much more FUN when Freddie's letting loose singing for an audience.
One of my all time faves, from decades ago
A rocker
" They had water beds " LOL.
All I heard of by Queen, prior to me buying my first Queen album, was their song Keep Yourself Alive. A really good song. I then bought their album Sheer Heart Attack, their third studio album, and then every studio album of theirs through the album The Game. They never really had one album which was full of great songs, but still...having all of the albums was worth having.
A day at the Races is near perfect, and A night at the Opera is a close second. Unlike alot of other bands Queen never put out bad albums
@@fletcherchristian2254 This Band Is just full of talent, every member is great and contributed. I sometimes will listen to only May written or sung songs. Top 10 guitarist for sure
You can tell how much Lex loves Queen & enjoying the song while Brad is nearly cringing inside lol
So good. Brian is hilarious.
At one point, Brian stopped singing the part about "tie your little brother to a brick" for fear of kids copying it, but then resumed. (Maybe after his 3 kids were adults.)
Innuendo or Death On Two Legs next please.
He's got designs on the daughter lolđ much love from the UK X
This typical Queen song is atypical.
I think lex was living brads reaction to the song as much as the song lol
I never thought the lyrics were complicated. Then again, a song of my teens.
Brian May wrote many of their rockin' tunes... anyway this song was on their '76 album and simple lyrical explanation is teenage angst - the parents of the girl he likes don't like and forbid her from dating nor seeing him.
Others have already said what the song's about, just getting rid of the parents and family for the night, love that classic line "take your little brother swimming, with a brick!". This song was described by the UK 'highbrow' newspaper The Times as "sheer bloody poetry". Enough said. Queen did it again.
Sometimes you guys. You completely understand the lyrics to 46 and 2, and then this one flies over your head. That's why this is so fun to watch.
Another great reactionâŒïžđŻđ„
You need to do âIâm In Love With My Carâ the drummer Roger Taylor sings it.
Definitely still a great song by Queen!!
One of their best! IT IS FUCKING ROCK n ROLL!
When this first came out, 'The Times' in UK gave it a 3-word review.... "Sheer Bloody Poetry..."
fav Queen song.. ohh my Lexs interpretation LOL
Once again I'm suggesting LAZY ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON or 39. Or what about MY BEST FRIEND which should definitely be used a dog commercial. đđ¶
*How can anyone NOT get these lyrics?* đ
Genuinely baffled.
This was a regular show opener, and now you know the lyrics you really should check out a concert performance. As I've commented before, most Queen songs sound much better live IMO.
Brad's face đ
Sometimes I just lol listening to you discuss the meaning.
Me too
First song on the followup album to Night At The Opera (which featured Bohemian Rhapsody). This album is called Day At The Races. If you've heard of the Marx Brothees, you'll understand the humor/ irony behind both titles. And Brad, Lex was right. We kicked Mom and Dad to the curb by any means possible when it came teenage passion.
Gotta give Good old fashioned lover boy a look
You GOTTA do March of the Black Queen!!! With lyrics.
Queen Good old fashioned lover boy official reaction
Try the Fairy Fellas Masterstroke from Queen 2. The lyrics will completely blow your minds. Hint though, its based on a painting!
Staying with Queen you should react to what is probably their most underrated song..."It's Late".
Holy shit, yes this needs to happen! That song is a journey, and so hard rocking!
YESSSS Absolutely Agree
Breaking news, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody and Journey's Don't stop believing have been preserved by the Library of Congress in the national registry. This is a great honor just over 600 songs are in the national registry.
One of the best rock songs ever written
Lex is a bit backwards here. It is just a fella telling his girl to deal with her parents somehow so the two of them can be together ...... and he offers a few suggestions.
Perfect summary
One of my all-time favorite Queen tracks! This is one that you turn up the volume to "11" and enjoy.
Best Queen song they ever did.
I still have the "Day at the races" album. This was excellent.
You gotta watch it live in Montreal 1981 & Wembley 1986 đ„đ„
It's a boy telling his girlfriend to ditch her parents and go out.
Was delighted to see Killer Queen last wk. In Williamsport, Pa. One of the best shows ever! Place was sold out. Phenomenal! Lead singer dresses & looks like Freddie. Audience participated. Go see them if u can. Won't be dissatisfied. All songs are great. Two hour show. Get Down, Make Love my favorite! Obviously couldn't perform that one. The lyrics aren't clean.
OMG I just came across some amazing work by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé! Check out "How Can I Go On" and "Barcelona". Gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes, such talent and beauty. Definitely not the feeling of Queen, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
And be impressed by Freddie cowriting an opera, and the opera singer being impressed by everything about Freddie, and they loved each other as friends right away and he took singing advice from her and she was his defender to her dying day!
Cool reaction guys! This is just a fun rock song, written by Brian May. As the guitarist he often wrote fun rock song. This song has one of the best rock riffs. The live versions are better then the studio version. This is a high school love song, the guy just wants some alone time with his girlfriend but her family is always in the way. This song has been covered by loads of other bands, because it is just fun. If you want a song with deeper meaning check out Innuendo - Queen.
đ
You played the album version! Haven't heard that in forever.
My mother hated this song when I brought A Day at the Races album home back in '77.
Queen completely redefined what a rock band was. They pushed the envelope on every front.
This was every teenage 70s boy in high school talking to the cute girl in class on a Friday afternoon
You should react to âGimmie the prizeâ by queen next!
Oh, wow, yes, agreed! Also Princes of the Universe has to be a must, right?
Must watch the movie!
This song is written by Queen's guitarist Dr Brian May. You guys should watch the live version of this.
Alright, let's go off the board for twenty and give "Mustapha" a listen! This one will throw you for a loop! lol
And Freddie said that for part of that he was just singing gibberish, for fun! It was for the sheer fun of singing in that way and the audiences were yelling for that song! A reaction doesn't have to be an analysis! Sometimes just a simple appreciation is more than enough!
@@mollyhall2954 I agree! Some songs are made for listening!
Also remember that Freddie didn't write all the lyrics by himself.
I think you can handle, Dragon attack, now that your hearing reel Queen now... Before the stadium rock songs
I'm with you Brad i have never got this one đ§đ€Ș
No No No ...he just wants to nail his high school sweetheart!!! It's pretty simple!
Oh yeah. Stone Cold Crazy, Brighton Rock, The Prophet Song.
Song was written by Brian May Tell Your Mother Down is an Australian colloquialism
The end of the chorus is "tie YOUR mother down, give me all YOUR love tonight" -- obviously he doesn't want the mom.
How is it possible not to at least Bob your head at this? Nobody searched for the meaning, trust me..."What is for us is the chorus!" I was fortunate enough to see them perform this in concert in 1979.
Queen Teo Torriatte. You will love it.
Has to be the greatest ever Intro,,,
When I was a teen there was this crazy radio dj in Oklahoma City. Everyone loved him, and he played this song at the beginning. To be honest, I didnât understand all the words. Lots of guys called their girlfriends mama. So I thought it was a war cry for all the guys to tie their mamas down so yeah. Finally I heard the lyrics. Itâs really kind of what is going on in the world now. This song was fun and tongue and cheek back then, but with people literally killing their fellow human beings with daily shootings etc, it canât be funny as it once was. Unless I go back in my Time Machine. I donât think this song would make it on mainstream stations today.
That the queen i liked back in the 70s
