My shortest flight and smallest plane! Aurigny to Alderney

- I've been fascinated with Alderney since moving to the Channel Islands, so I finally took a long weekend there, flying on Aurigny's Dornier 228 from Guernsey. Despite a minor argument about my pre-purchased seat (1A, of course) it was one of my best ever flights, and the return wasn't bad either! Expensive but well worth it to visit this incredible island and have a somewhat different flying experience to what I'm used to!
The last time I flew from Guernsey to Alderney was about 20 years ago when Aurigny were still operating Trislanders. I was sitting right behind the copilot's seat, so had a clear view ahead. Imagine my concern when we started our approach into Alderney, but seemed to be ignoring the runway, which I could see stretching from left to right ahead of us. It was only then that I found out that Alderney actually has three runways; the main asphalt one, plus two grass ones! That day I experienced my first and only landing on grass. 😊
Wow what an experience! I've only had a grass landing in a glider, and that was expected!
"My word, it's noisy". Have you ever flown on the old Aurigny Trislanders? There's an experience that would change your life, and possibly your pants. The noise haunts me to this day. I have been on some of the more modern turbo props, Southampton to CI, but not for many years. If you see me now, I will be on one of those boats, far, far, below you. Enjoy your travel. 😁
Haha thanks, never been on a Trislander but would love to! My next trip to Alderney will be by boat
Done that trip a few times when Aurigny were using 10 seater Britten-Norman Islander aircraft, that were operated with just the one pilot, and a few times in order to get the aircraft balanced a passenger would be seated in the co pilots seat, with strict instructions "dont touch anything!", and on one trip when there was 8 of us and all our luggage would not fit in, we were told "ok we drop you off then we will fly back to Guernsey and bring your luggage over.
Wow, what memories for you! Love the luggage story especially. Wish I could have flown on those islanders
Nice video. These really short flights are often the coolest ones to be on, as you actually feel that you are flying, unlike when you sit for 6 hours on a Dreamliner.
Totally agree, I loved being able to see what the pilot and first officer were up to!
Thank you for taking me on your flight
Absolutely!
Thanks for the nostalgia trip. Wow the Dornier has an aisle! I've only ever travelled to Alderney on a Trislander so just 2 seats wide no aisle. I loved those bone rattling flights as was used to them from a baby but when I took friends over they nearly needed new knickers!
😂 Glad you enjoyed it. Really wish I'd had a chance to ride a trislander!
@helloantoniotraveladventures you say that but the windows were literally held in with roughly applied silicone sealant patch jobs and they rattled. When it rained droplets of moisture came through the silicone edges. Quite an experience but one I remember fondly. It’s been 10 plus years since I’ve been back. Your video has me looking at flights.
Sounds quite exciting! Hope you're back in the islands soon. I've truly fallen in love with them
@helloantoniotraveladventures I hope so too. And you too!
Aurigny is the french name for Alderney
Certainly is
Sometimes on small planes Pax are moved to make for safe weight distribution. Safety first.
You're right there, I've learned that since
Those Aurigny flights are great fun, thanks for sharing your two experiences. I guess you can walk into Saint Anne from the airport. Did you spend a few hours there?
Yes, in fact I spent a few days there! Vlog to follow
I'm going on there!
When!?
