  • On 13th June W&LLR loco 'Sir Drefaldwyn' hauled a special train for donors who have contributed to its major overhaul. This was the first official service with the restored locomotive.
699.01 was built by the Franco Belge company in 1944 as a tender-tank locomotive for the German Army but it's unlikely it entered service with them. In 1946 it went to the Salzkammergut Lokalbahn and was sold on in 1955 to the Steiermärkische Landesbahnen who converted it to a tank loco, gave it their number 699.01 and where it worked until 1965. In 1969 the loco was bought by the W&LLR, entering service here in May 1970.
Although still awaiting a final coat of black paint, this trip marked the successful rebuild after 23 years out of service.
The original of the song about the Salkzkammergut Lokalbahn, where 699.01 worked in the 1950s, can be found here: • Verschiedene Interpret...
And there's a very good documentary (in German) that includes lots more film of the SKGLB, interviews with people who remember it, and some then and now comparisons of sections of the route. • Die Salzkammergut Loka...

Stunning drone shots towards the end. Timeless, bucolic, relaxing, glorious.

The song, as the link cites, comes from the Austrian film 'Kaiserball' - English translation: Emperor's Ball - set during the Austro-Hungarian Empire period. I get the inkling that the producers of the film saw the Salzkammergut Lokalbahn when preparing to shoot it and decided a song number about it just couldn't go amiss. They would have written it into the film, because the idea wouldn't have been founded in the script, hence why it feels so encapsulating, just like the smartly-turned out locomotive and events of this video. Nice touch to do your take on the song. Regards, Samuel Farris.

I was five years old when I rode behind this engine and it's nice to see her in steam again though I must confess I prefer her in her original black and red lined livery.

Lovely video, which could have been filmed in either Germany or Austria!

Please allow me a question: Why does it carry the number 699.01? It never was an ÖBB locomotive, and the real 699.01 is still running in Austria, on the Taurachbahn. Is it some kind of sponsorship / partnership thing?
