- How to paint Death Guard Chaos Space Marine by Lester Bursley
Script:
1. Model Air OLIVE DRAB is airbrushed on to the whole model.
2. Game Color PLAGUE BROWN is then sprayed at a downward 45 degree angle to highlight the top and vertical surfaces that light from above would hit.
3. Game Color DEAD FLESH is sprayed from directly above the miniature for the brightest highlight.
4. Before the wash is applied, Game Color GLOSS VARNISH is sprayed on the entire model for two reasons; to protect the airbrush work done so far, and to create a barrier for the wash cleanup with alcohol.
5. After a couple coats of GLOSS VARNISH are allowed to completely dry, my wash recipe of BABY POOP is sprayed on to the entire model.
6. Using IISOPROPYL ALCOHOL and a sponge makeup applicator, I remove the dried wash from the surface while trying to leave it in the deep detail areas.
7. Game Color PLAGUE BROWN is applied to the fly icon on the right shoulder pad as well as the skulls on the left shoulder pad.
8. Reaper Master Series color GHOUL SKIN is applied to all the flesh on the face.
9. For the first highlight Master Series MOLDY SKIN is applied to all but the deepest recesses.
10. The final highlight is achieved with Master Series paint BLOODLESS SKIN. Apply this to the areas of interest that you want to bring out and think of the areas that would be hit directly by light directly above the model.
11. Vallejo Model Air color ALUMINIUM was the color chosen for all the silver pieces.
12. Game Color BEASTY BROWN is thinned, 4 drops of water to 1 drop of paint, and applied to areas that I want rust.
13. To make the chips in the armor a 1 to 1 mix of Game Color's CHARRED BROWN and BLACK is used.
14. Highlights for the chips are done with a 1 to 1 mix of Game Color's PLAGUE BROWN and DEAD FLESH. Putting these highlights directly under the dark chip I made will help create the illusion of a 3D chip.
15. Game Color DEAD FLESH is used to pick out some edges and the armor is done.
16. Vallejo Pigment color GREEN EARTH is mixed with water to a wash consistency, then applied to the base being careful not to touch the feet of the model.
17. Game Color BLACK is applied to the base lip, and when dry, the model receives a coat of Game Color MATTE VARNISH, then we're ready to game. Les' Tools

This channel proving once again that it more than lives up to its name.
Another great video by Lester. Thanks
Amazing to watch the detail come in as you highlight the various areas
By far my favorite tutorial I think, great job Les!
Super results as usual and I really like the color choices...hope you don't tire of making these great vids, becuase I never get tired of viewing them, buddy....great inspiration and now time to play!....Jim.
OMG INSANE, I wouldn't have the patience for that, you are brill, keep up the insnely excellent painting
@TheZansul Yeah was a mistake. I was editing the end part of the video @ 4am and didn't realize what I was doing. But I'm still learning :)
Les great work per usual. Really like how you break down the steps and the paint selection for each model and explain the technique being used. Good work as usual really nasty, "nice" looking death guard.
Man, this video is so amazing. great work!
Just tried your technique on my first Dead Guard model (and first airbrush model). Amazing! Love it!
Freakin beautiful bro I think this is my fav mini paint scheme youve done yet love it. Makes me want to start a chaos army
Les you're the man! Always good quality tutorials. Thanks alot :)
you sir, ARE AMAZIIING!
as always, amazing!
The 3D effect on the chips looks awesome. I'm going to have to try that.
Everytime you paint something i want to give it a try but then again i dont have an airbrush but when i do ill for sure try them all!. Again your work is very inspiring!
Freakin awsome Les! your skill with paint never stops amazing me.
I must give creds to you. Im impressed and learning from you THANKS. Keep up the good work.
thanks Les, been hoping you'd do some deathguard for a while now! :) awesome painting!
that is an insane amount of detail in ur guy, but grats on making it awsome.
Excellent Video man, awesome detail man
les you have done it again outstanding bro
Thanks for the tutorial, it will help my mighty chaos army hide its primer shame. Keep up the great vids so we can spread the word. Also thanks for mixing it up between airbrush and standard brush. There is no right way. We all do the best we can with whatever tools we got. the more I paint the better I get, regardless of tool. Les is more, lol.
this is one of your best in my opinion.
thank you for sharing your skill ;)
This was my most favorite of all yours videos. Thx
Great video. Thanks for posting a video that uses an airbrush. Really great job on him. :)
@awesomepaintjob O thats also a good tip! I did order all the paints as i was busy painting the Death guard myself. But after seeing this mind blowing stuff from you! They are redone!
I'm not into this type of mini but had to say "fantastic vid" A1 paint job. Look forward to your next post.
@peyo001 I did a poll a little while back and asked the viewers if they wanted me to stay with brushes or use what I got. It ended with a vote tally of: 12 wanting me to use BRUSH ONLY vs. 433 telling me to use whatever and show them how I paint my own stuff.
The wash and alcohol over the gloss is a pretty cool trick.
Same as graefx. Never thought to varnish, then wash so I could pull off parts of the wash easily. Thanks for the idea man.
Holy snap, that looks amazing o.o
Awesome model man
Awesome.
Epic Bro just Epic !!
Absolute perfekt! Thank you for your job & the video! Greetings from Fankonia!
I've just done the first three steps of this tutorial on 75 plague marines. It took me less than a minute per model and layer. So yes, airbrushing base coats and highlights is faster than using brushes, even when drybrushing.
Also, aribrushing will result in thinner layers of paint without any visible brushstrokes. Of course, there is a point in any model where you swap to brushes - for small details that need hard edges for example. I use an Harder and Steenbeck Evolution Airbrush.
Please make more chaos videos! This one is great!
Nice! I think I love you Les. Might want to share this one on your Dakka blog.
Finaly come around the best minis out there! ;)
Being a long time nurgle-gamer it makes me glad seeing this. Really good paintjob, i liked the grey skin.. to bad that i paint my nurgle grey so it would be a tad to little contrast. :D
love nurgle sooo much.
Like this video a lot, although I am still trying to get to grips with the airbrush. I have had mine for a month and still trying to achieve a fraction of what you do. But like the last APJLes vid tells us, i will keep at it. Dettol(Simple Green equivalent in UK/AUS) is my new best friend!
Thanks for all your efforts.
Thx,Les
@TheDuke07 The wash colorized the model while airbrushing. Even if applied with a brush it would have changed the tone of the model. Using the sponge to wipe it off of most of the areas kept the original color airbrushed while bringing out the details and adding a little grunge.
i love watching these videos. never used my airbrush as i feel i have not gotten good enough with a brush first. wonder if this is a normal feeling? (allso afraid of compressed air and paint mess)
cool vid
This is the perfect tutorial! Thank you so much for this.
Hope you could do some Fantasy minies too :-)
dude great freaking video great freaking video i love the chips in the armor im thinkin about doin some of these guys my self and i was wondering if you had any pointers for something oozing out of those dents and rents?
@eq2templar Thanks! Yeah I fudged up the chip portion, it was suppose to be 30 seconds at 200% speed and I took the 5 minute section and sped it up to 30 seconds. So about 1000% speed :/ I'm still learning and trying to perfect my tutorials so I apologize.
EXELENTE :)
I love the video. One comment - I wish you would slow down the speed when showing some of the detail work at the end like the highlights on the armor/shoulder pad and the armor damage. It would be very cool to see what you are doing there and it was really hard to see because it was sped up so fast and you were turning the mini a lot. Thanks as always for these!! It is indeed an awesome paint job! :)
@HueyOoeyKablooey The head is actually in cool grey tones. This was done to contrast the face from the model and compliment the warm tones of the armor. It was an artistic decision. While most of the models have helmets its good to bring interest to the random guy not wearing one. Using flesh tones would have blended it into the model but that is exactly what I didn't want.
Outstanding, I believe this one is my favorite of all the models you've done thus far. Oh...and thanks for the seizure you gave me when doing the chipped paint effects! You need one of those warnings they put on video games. hahaha
@SpeedGear1982 check my other channel APJLes.
Excellent tutorial as always! What would you recommend to identify the different squads?
love the vids
what airbrush do you use and what pressure do yo use?
Very very nurglie...Awesome mate!
Cheers!

@ChaoticPainting Yeah I'm getting more and more of their line. The triad systems take the thinking out of mixing and color choice.
Thanks for this tutorial. I will certainly use the technique of airbrushing the wash and
partially removing it with the makeup sponge. Great idea. When is your online store
coming? Thanks again.
@awesomepaintjob
love the vids
what airbrush do you use and what pressure do yo use?
Great job again. What's your take on the vallejo pigments vs. the others you have used?
What do you use to make the holder for the mini when painting?
Awesome vids btw, just getting into air brushing myself (and warhammer actually) and your vds have been rather helpfull
I've just come across something worthwhile to add: I had big jars of Vallejo Wash meant for dipping (and then shaking off excess) shade onto the minis. When I looked at the consistency, I thought it might go through the airbrush. It went through beautifully (without even thinning it), with the wash instantly gathering in the edges and recesses as intended. Not as expensive as pre-made GW wash (200ml @ 16 Euro instead of 12ml @ 3 Euro) and not as cheap as self-made wash, but a solid option. =]
i feel pain watching your vids Les. I want an air brush so bad lol. great looking mini
Thx so much for reply I love your work so much As you know im new to airbrush and I was wondering if citadel paints work well in a airbrush. I notice you use different name brand of paints ( witch i am a big fan of those colors ! ) Are these paints you use higher quality ? And are they the same "type" of paint ie acrylic paint ? Whats the recipe for the Baby Poop ? I can ask questions all day :D thx so much
Hi,THANK YOU VERY MUCH for you tutorials, very fast and good videos.tel my one thing-what you think about vallejo wash??thanks
Les: love how this turned out! Question though- what strength alcohol do you use for the clean-up? There are several different strengths/percentages available. Thanks!
Les has been taken over by Chaos! In the Emperor's Name we must PURGE! lol
nice job man
Love all your videos mate. Just wanted to say though that most people don't have an air brush so can't really follow the tut's you make with it. Nonetheless another good video as well as a decent mini!
cheers
whats the brush your using there for the chipped effect? by the way so freaking awesome job man! thank you for posting this up
You are seriously amazing at painting bro. What would be your advise on painting chips? Not necssaserly on minatures but any model.
I really like the varnish, wash and alcohol technique...Just one thing, what do you use alcohol wise? White Spirits, or medical rubbing alcohol...or are they one the same?
And while it is on my mind ace paint job, love it.
I have never used a airbrush myself ( cant wait ! ) Do they give a more detail paint job then brushes ? And is it faster to airbrush a model rather then paint it all by brush ? Also If you could tell me the exact model of airbrush you are using or a model you would recommend for painting Warhammer 40k Thx so much I love your colors / work Papa Nurgle Bless You !
Awsome work. Worth the suscripcion :D
Daaaaamn fine looking Nurgle marine.. one of he best.. Only wish U slowed down that 3d effect on 1 off the chips... was ll too quick.. but I think GP did one a while back.. I'll check there..
Cheers for the great vid!
Hey guys so in terms of the fluff, what is wrong with his head? What is his mouth attached to? Anyone have an interesting answer?
Very cool final model and a great vid.
Could you perhaps slow down the vid in places like the 'chips' bit? That's the kind of small detail that makes all the difference that people might not know how to do and seeing it (even for a min or so) at double speed would be handy.
Love the vids - learned a lot already.
I think if you had done the gun in a red ish couler it would have looked even better ive sin a asajar do nurgle death guard that way and it dose stand out a bit more other than that great job les keep up the awesome work :)
@EvilhomerNZ Thanks! All my tutorials go on dakka in the tutorial section.
@Meentanker Good luck out there bud and keep safe! The BDU thing is very specific and no schemes actually use anything similar. A friend of mine did a desert scheme on his Sons of Medusa SM's but that was the only scheme I have seen with it. I'll see what I can do and post it on my blog.
I must ask: what type of varnish do you use? a purity seal type, or a water wash up type, like micro? any input is greatly appreciated, I love your methods keep it up!
I see he use gloss varnish Vallejo, it comes in liquid formula you have to add water if you want
when i make chips and scratches in my armor, i prsonally prefere to use a modelling knife and scratch with it. but your method was also awsome.
@lordmetroid Pretty much the same in my eyes. Just different colors, and I'm digging the triad system.
what colors did you use to make the baby poop wash and great tutorial help me a lot could you make a video on ho to paint a death guard rhino using like rust and decay above the tracks any way thank again for the vid keep up the good painting =}
How do varnishes effect the airbrush? I am thinking, the inside will become quite messed up as it is coated with layers of varnish. Or metal flakes for that matter if one uses a metal color.
@lordmetroid It doesn't matter. They are all water based paints, so metallic or whatever it all cleans up the same :)
Fantastic job, are the ( Chaos ) Space Marines your favorite Models Lester?
damn you're good
excellent! may i ask what type of spray gun can be used with these paints?
hello mister les, what kind of airbrush are you using? thanks! nice vid
What model badger brush do you use to get such a thin stream of paint? mine covers everywhere when i try to spot paint a mini.
Do you have any tips for when using an airbrush to stop getting lumps of paint splatering the mini?
Question about the airbrush technique with the sponge; How does it differ in affect than brushing it on?
Do you dilute your paint before airbrushing? If so at what ratio?
I went out and bought an air brush and an air compressor after seeing this video man, if my death guard come out looking even remotely close to yours I'll be very happy
@RandomMilkyWay Although it could be argued that the plague marine is a type of marine dedicated to Nurgle and the Death Guard are a legion of Chaos Marines who worship Nurgle. In the minds of most people they are the same thing;
Amazing job on this love it. Can i aak where you get the Atmosphere music from plz?
@Nashrocks1 looks like the end of a "DeVilbies" or a "Paasche", Badger i realistically priced in comparison to other brands (like Iwata) and reliable as well as durable, buying a proper airbrush (like i.e. a Badger 150 or 100SG) saves you a lot of money in the long run and you will get the "feel" of a dual action airbrush from the beginning without the hazzle of starting out with single action airbrushes, the money saved can be used on a proper compressor and a moisture trap. Badger is my fav!
in between airbrushing your colours, how do you clean your brush? what do you spray in your brush?
cheers
@Scherdnr They look the same. I've used them next to MIG and no difference besides color choice. MIG did a bunch of tests to confirm they have small pigments than Vallejo but you can only see it under microscope.
Lester when you spray the base coat do you wait for it to dry or do you spray onto wet ?
The model that was used in this video. Is it an GW original or Forge World conversion? Do you still used Badger Airbrush and which air brush model did you use in this vid?
+Lilith Sings conversions, at least two different shoulder pads (the fly shoulderpad from the Apostles of Contagion & the normal 3 headed death gaurd shoulderpads)
