- Can a hybrid bike keep up with a full carbon road bike racing bike?
Today I will be test riding our new Trek FX 2 hybrid bike to see if I can keep up with my wife while she rides her carbon road bike. We will be testing speeds and power output for zone 2 efforts on flat roads and hills.
We are testing this combination to see if it will work for bike touring in Vietnam.

Who wants to see Thuong and Cruise race up Monkey Mtn with Cruise on the hybrid bike? Who will win? 😅
I wanna see you race against her on a mobot royale 😂
100% Thuong going to defeat Cruise :)
Love seeing more of Vietnam
as you cycle across it!! 🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳
First! I'm so happy when you post videos like this. Especially someone who isn't always able to ride , since I have two little children.
Glad you enjoy them!
Nothing beats a bit of friendly competition to keep you motivated to try and improve your fitness level. I am very impressed by how well you have just got back fully into training with tangible results as well as having fun together.
I am currently temporarily off the road after a rather painful traffic accident, so I particularly enjoyed this virtual ride .
It's fun getting back into it after a break. Heal up quick!
Nice to see you guys again
May the better person win .It is not a race but an experience
Sports car vs pickup truck is a great analogy esp with an FX2 vs Carbon road bike. Although an FX5 or FX6 the differences are minimal. I have an FX3 for daily commuting and a domane for longer weekend pleasurable rides. Up to an hour of riding - speeds on both bikes are more or less the same maybe a 1-2mph faster on the domane. The road bike however just feels so so much better and you can go way further. I'm in my 50s and an hours commute on the FX, I'm done. Whereas on the Domane I'm quite happy to go on all day rides. A big factor I find is hand positions. I get terrible hand numbness with the FX. On a road bike I have no problems. Maybe just me.
I rented an allez, didn't feel huge difference, but I did feel a big difference when riding the emonda or specialized allez , compared to fx
You could always install some alt bars on your FX like some Jones H-Bar or Velo Orange Crazy bars, or even some inner barends like the SQLabs Innerbarends. This should fix your issue. I can't ride on a normal flat bar more than 30min but alt bars are mor comfortable than drop bars for me.
Another excellent bike together you two I was rooting for you both!! 🦾🦾🦾
Thanks! 😁

Matching bike, helmet and sunnies, Thuong-san! Let's go!
She's getting a lot more pro
For many years had enough on Road Bikes :) which several years ago had testing many brands beforehand. Hybrid Bikes are more fun also many of them are truly speedy Gonzalez:) Im no longer in to Myth of Road Bikes also dont care of full Carbon's etc...Today 2024 technology has advanced greatly on Aluminum thickness & speed durability. Im not here promoting Brands Of course most everyone know those quality advancement's technology Brands buying with out selling one of your Kidneys:):):) Nicely done Vid!!!
If you choose to go with a larger saddle bag on her bike, like one meant for bikepacking.... there is a brace bar i found on Amazon that kinda keeps the bag from swaying AND it adds two more water bottle cage mounts. One on each side, similar to those behind the saddle water bottle mounts i have seen on tri bikes.
I went a step further than a hybrid and went with an Orbea Mountain Bike. While my path of travel is not that rough, I appreciate the comfort and stability of the ride. The extra effort required just means a better cardio exercise.
MTB is also a good option. I like the rigid fork though for what we're doing.
The Orbea MTB has a hard tail and the ability to lockin the front fork.
That's the helmet I use! Very cool
I suffered with carpal tunnel for months after a 3 week tour with mountain bike flat handlebars. If you see on your video, the wrist is bent. With handlebar with hoods, the wrist isn't bent. 25 years of riding with hoods and no problem.
It's a bad habit I had even from when I was doing MTB, I'll need to be careful about that
@@TwoWheelCruise it's ok mountain bike riding on trail as the wrist is adjusting all the time with bumps and gear changes. But spend and hours and days in same position on tour is the killer.
I always had hybrid bikes, lately I was wondering if a road bike would make my commute a bit faster but mainly easier because of the position. Thanks again for the great video!
Happy Easter!
I think some high end hybrid bikes can be faster than some lower end road bikes 😀
Gravel is the ideal compromise of speed, comfort and transport options for people who mainly ride on the road. Road bike is built for racing, uncomfortable for everyday use.
I have clip on aero bars on my flat bar hybrid for long distance, it really helps with speed and gives a good place to rest your wrists from a flat bar.
I was considering getting some of those but worried about Vietnamese traffic
I love when you talk about your bike.
I just bought a Trek FX2 as well and i'm curious to know what you think of the cowhorn you added.
also, i saw in your recent video that you changed your bike already? was the hybrid one not good?
We didn't change much, just adjusted the handlebar setup a bit. The new bar ends are OK, but it would be better with something a little larger and more sturdy material.
I rode 5 miles on my road bike after not riding since November. It was brutal. lol. My legs are still dead and it's been almost a week.
It's tough to get started again. My but hurt more than my legs for me
I learned the hard way years ago to never stop running and cycling.... ever.
Since the FX2 is a base, entry level hybrid, I'm not sure this constitutes a fair comparison of a hybrid
nice vietnam scenery 👌🙂
Wow, you must have been carrying an extra 10 to 15 pounds and you were keeping up with Thuong! I think you mentioned your knees were complaining. I stretch on the evening of my ride days and would definitely recommend it. It’s P.T. for all the abuse I put it through on the bike. On another note, I tried a top tube bag (like yours) on my road bike. I hated it because my knees would hit it while out of the saddle. I ended up repositioning it under the downtube (inverted) behind the front wheel. Works like a charm!
Thanks for your suggestions!
jeeees... cruze, you're cavs are no joke!
sprinter genes haha
@@TwoWheelCruise XD i belive you
Your leg extension at the bottom of the stroke _looks_ a little long, too
Also, I really like the stats you provided, like power, heart rate, speed, etc. during the ride. Maybe also adding cadence next time will be nice. Can the data be added to your videos?
All of the data is on our Strava page. The cadence is on my cycling computer and usually we are between 70-95, though maybe lower on steep climbs.
I ride a Hybrid myself, I'm 61 with some joint and back issues, for me the flat bars are just fine, I don't ride far or fast so its perfect for me, I live in a city and use my bike for errands, commuting to work.
LOL if I really want to go on a day trip I ride to the train station and go to my destination that way, I can take my bicycle on the train.
Actually I was considering getting the FX series but I think my next bike might be a Priority Bicycles Priority 8, belt drive and a Shimano 8 speed internal hub. cleaner running.
I know for some riders a road bikes with drop bars is the best thing, I respect that.
A good quality belt drive bike sounds awesome
Better yet Cruise will use the folding bike and Thuong the hybrid bike. That will be one interesting challenge.
the folding bike is a lot closer to the hybrid bike I think
I have the 2022 FX2 disk, I swapped out the stock cassette with a 11-32 and 28kph was so much easier. The stock handle bar was to wide so I cut 2 cm off each end. Yes the shifters are crap as well as the detailers so once you replace all that the bike is quite good.
Yes, lots of good potential with the frame
Try flipping the stem up side down ,and see how it rides again
I'll Interested to see how your brake-pads go with the extra weight and long down hill sections.
We go through them quick on our road bikes, but I don't think we'll be doing too many technical downhills with this bike
What psi were you running?
Do you find the flat bar handlebars to be more uncomfortable? I've rode the wife's hybrid and my hands go numb.
I'm originally a MTBer so I'm used to the flat bars
Maybe a little more (aft) setback for the saddle
Good suggestion, I'll try adjusting that
If you truly push, I think you will win in the climb but it will be a tough victory.
like comparing ,apple to a orange , different to start with.
Thuong won, Congrats!
I have a Trek 920 😊 so I have a bias 😅❤
That does look like a sweet bike, I don't think it's available here though
I wish somebody would do the same test between the fx and the verve. More people compare the fx to the verve before they buy a hybrid. Not too many compare a road bike to a hybrid. Seems like most people already know if they want a road bike or a hybrid, but those who want a hybrid are having a hard time deciding between fx and verve because we all want comfort, but we don't know exactly how much performance are we sacrificing going with the verve over the fx.
I have both. Fx much faster
FX gives you much more position flexibility. Verve forces you to be more upright so it will usually be slower.
i'm always wondering about clipless pedals. I bought a pair a while back to use, but stop using it, because my feet fell asleep and anxiety of not being alble to unclip due to mechanical issues. Have you ever had such a scenario ? What pedals are easier to unclip and what pedals are those ?
To ease anxiety of being unable to unclip in time, I'd recommend setting up a bike trainer and just sit there putting your foot in and taking it out. If you don't have a trainer handy, just place your bike in a doorway so you can lean without falling down completely. Then do the same... clip and unclip until it becomes easier. I ride clipless on most of my bikes, including my brakeless fixed gears. I run spd-sl on my road bike and spd on everything else. Combo pedals are also an option, but not on my brakeless fixed gears. For combo pedals I like Shimano PD-EH500. Flat side has fairly large area. I do wanna try the PD-T8000 next. The flat side is even larger.
@@kevinfeeney5309 I understand that, but my worry is , if their is a mechanical issue that won't allow me to unclip..does that happen ?
@JitinMisra I've had clipless pedals for years and haven't had an issue. Just make sure you have your release tension set correctly. I set mine to the hardest on the fixed gears and ¾ of the way on my geared bikes. Seems to have worked for me.
I would start with MTB SPD pedals. They are very easy to get in/out of and you can still walk normally
Nice. Is your bar alu?
Now cut down those silly fender struts before they stab someone. LOL Especially the front that must be in the toe zone.
1/2 inch past the bracket is plenty. Get the rear one the max gap from the tire. Those end caps soon disappear.
Thanks for your suggestions and yes
What do you find more comfortable the FX or the road bike ?
Road bike for faster/longer rides, hybrid bike for slower speeds and city rides
do you normally wear a heart rate monitor ?
when we're doing training rides, yes
Nice hybrid...
...but definitely lose the "I'm a pterodactyl" flag pole length handlebars.
Try a 500mm flat-bar and mount them down and away (opposite to traditional).
Or go down to a 460mm and those bar ends will finally be of use.
My wife really likes the super wide handlebars, but I agree I think they are a little too long
so a carbon bikes doesn't make a big difference its just more of the person fitness? Im trying to. find a new bike not sure if a carbon bike is worth it over other bikes.
A carbon bike will outpace aluminium any day.
I raced on an aluminum crit bike and it was fine, but in general carbon performs better. It is a lot more expensive and less durable though
🚴🇻🇳
Where is Taro-chan and Black Sesame-chan?
We use Black Sesame-chan still here in Da Nang. Taro-chan is waiting for us in the US
Why is it always a race? Why can't people just enjoy riding their bike? Motorcycle sport bike riders have the same issue. They can't get it in their heads that some people might just like to go for a ride.
Who cares
