  • Starting a new course! And it's literally Draw a Box so far :P except now I actually have to do all the assignments and homeworks that I was afraid of before and push myself beyond my comfort zone lol. Also, the course listing says Photoshop is required, but literally everything in the class is done traditionally? Let me know any questions you have and I'm looking forward to checking in soon when I get further along in class!

    Its always great to see such an enthusiasm to learn to get better at drawing.
    I loved the way you try to explain what you're going through your courses and it actually reminded me of some stuff I've been neglecting for awhile now. As you advance further its easier to not keep up with these more tedious studies/practices. Keep at it.

    Thanks for uploading this! I’d been putting off doing the Rotated Boxes exercise for WEEKS, even though I knew it was designed to teach me to be okay with failure. This video finally kicked my ADHD brain into gear and I finished the exercise! The end result is very bad but I’m so glad I got it out of the way.

    I took an animal drawing class with Sorie a year ago through class101. We did the same line and ellipse exercises in the beginning of the class. We had to use a gray alcohol marker to sketch the framework of the animal and then we went in with a pentel brush pen to fill in the rest. It was an awesome class! I learned so much and gained more confidence with drawing animals from her class.

      That's awesome! A couple of the students said they'd taken her Domestika course before this one and they said they had enjoyed that. I'm really enjoying the marker+fineliner or brush pen workflow! I never thought I'd get comfortable with pen and ink but here I am!

    I have the dynamic bible by Peter Han and it has many of the same exercises. If I’m not mistaken, draw a box, Peter Han, and Sorie Kim are all from Art Center College of Design so it makes sense there’s a lot of overlap

      @@Mithrilda ah minor correction. Draw a Box and Sorie Kim went to Concept Design Academy which is like 10 minutes away from Art Center. Peter Han was an instructor at both Art Center and Concept Design Academy

    I definitely know what you mean about the tools. When you see other artists using the same paints and pens, etc. as you, it kind of gets rid of that excuse, and you can just focus on getting better as an artist.
    The course looks really good. I remember doing drawabox and I didn't even get to the texture part. Even though I was really excited to get there, I was so worn out by the 250 box challenge, I didn't want to continue. However, I did start it again, and seeing my improvement in boxes and perspective was definitely a boost!

    • @Mithrilda
      @Mithrilda  Před 2 lety

      Yeah exactly! I slowed down so much during the 250 box challenge then I just petered out after that. How's your second round with DaB going?

    • @Kaitheminion
      @Kaitheminion Před 2 lety

      @@Mithrilda I definitely see improvement with my understanding of perspective compared to the first time - especially with rotating boxes. I'm back to the challenge, but I'm thinking of either doing half the amount, or however many I get to before I start losing momentum. I might go to the next section and draw a few boxes everyday as warm-up. I'm the type of person where, if I leave something for a few days, I find it really hard to get back into, so I don't want to reach that point and abandon drawabox again.

      Hell yeah! The fundamentals are simple (but far from easy). They're also not that necessary for making pretty things. Sometimes it's easier to just skip it for now then circle back with more experience under your belt :) anything to get more hours of practice in. Perfect is the enemy of good

    Please keep sharing your progress. This is so helpful :D What are your thoughts on translating your mechanical drawing skills (like ones you gain after taking a class like this) into digital, especially using a drawing tablet without the display. Is a display tablet the way to go? Thank you :)

    • @Mithrilda
      @Mithrilda  Před 2 lety

      I dont think it'll be hard to translate, every medium has its own muscle memory (like using the brush pen vs the fineliner) and digital is just another one. Back in the day, I hated using my tablet without a display because I thought it was so hard. However, I picked it back up recently after a few years of not using it and I'm realizing it's not actually that bad, it was just my skills that weren't up to par haha. So I think you can make great art on a screen tablet, non screen tablet, pen, paper, etc as long as you have the base skills. But don't underestimate it either. Each medium has its own quirks and rules. Learn them seriously with a course or guide and expect resistance when starting anything new

    I feel for the artist who was confused but I am pretty sure that is just how college art classes work. They really just throw you into it to test and push the students, they do kind of expect to have majority of the fundamentals from highschool art classes. Sadly not all highschools teach those fundamentals like how a college professor expects. By the end of my first semester at least 4 students dropped. By my second year out of a 25 person class only around 15 people were left. By the third year only 10. When I left my art college the average graduating class was only 5 students. I know a lot what contributed to the drops were the academic classes requirement, but many dropped due to it being overwhelming. I know a handful were due to they didnt want to do the fundamentals they wanted to work on their own stuff and stuff they found fun. But keep on working it, you have so much knowledge already stored in you. I do hope you continue to enjoy the college classes and it helps get you to where you want to go.

    Hi, regarding the Copic markers in the supply list, we’re you required to get (3-5) of each Warm, Neutral, and Cool. Or the box of 12 for each? Can’t see the online supplies list unless I register for the course :/ thx

    • @Mithrilda
      @Mithrilda  Před 2 lety

      The Copic marker or grey fineliner is for making a sketch that you ink over later. So you only need one marker OR grey fineliner. However I did run out of ink in my marker and ran down the nib of my fineliner so you might need an ink refill or like two grey fineliners or something
