Just an FYI for people traveling with multiple cats- I was able to fly by myself with my two cats as long as I purchased two seats and two cat passes as well. It wasn’t cheap, but it was cheaper than having to fly a friend back and forth to help me out. I wish I would’ve known about the private screening rooms! Going through TSA with my cats was so stressful!!!

During my 3 hour flight from Anchorage to Portland there was a cat distress meowing the whole time. It was especially bad when the air pressure in the cabin could change, you could tell it was painful for him. :( His owner provided comfort but he was just not doing well, poor guy. It was hard to see and hear. He was so happy when he and his human got off the plane, though!

I'm so heartbroken because we have to leave our cat behind when we move to Australia - he's too large to be in the cabin and being in the luggage area for 26 hours is just awful, not to speak of him getting handled at the airport by random people who I can't trust. On top of all that, putting him in quarantine for 10 days with no one holding him or petting him is just too much. He's super sensitive and I just know he wouldn't eat a bite in quarantine. It's just so hard to say goodbye to him. Now our mission is to find him a perfect forever home... I'm very glad that you were able to take your beauties with you!

This is so sad! My husband is in the Army and we chose to go to the California desert over Germany because I didn’t want to worry about what to do with our dog and cat. But I’m worried we might have to go overseas on our next duty station. How did it go, did your find your kitty a new home?

I had to fly my two cats from Japan to Sweden and this video pretty much nailed my experience. It was super stressful, but totally doable. The private screening room is especially important, I think. When we made our trip, we had to make a transfer in Germany, which meant going through security again. The workers seemed a little put off by us asking for a room but I'm SUPER GLAD we did. Because as they were scanning the carriers, one of our cats just hit his limit and *freaked out*. I tried to hold onto him as best as I could, but he was really hurting me to get away. Since we were in a room, I was able to let go of him, but if we had been on the security floor, I might have lost him. I would have ended up with extremely injured hands/arms and/or a lost cat in a foreign airport. Getting that private room definitely avoided a disaster for us!
Had a cat moving with me this week. With all the flight cancelations, we were stuck at an airport with no hotels nearby that allowed pets. I was so lucky that my Zigster turned out to be an ace traveller and chilled out the whole 26 hours we were stuck sleeping and staying at the airport. If you're in that situation, look for family bathrooms, breast feeding rooms, and changing rooms that have a proper door so you can let them out to stretch their kitty legs, eat, and drink. Obviously be mindful of others who actually need these spaces for their intended purpose and clean up all cat hair after the fact to avoid triggering someone's allergies.

I moved from Oregon to Virginia 11 years ago and after my poor kitty suffered an allergic reaction to the calming pill the vet gave her than the airline at the last minute made me purchase a new case taking away the carrier she used for 5 years(They changed the style of planes that day).Than when transferring planes in Ohio I went from a large jet to a small commuter flight where they forced me to put her in cargo(no carryons no exceptions).She turned from a loving cat that loved belly rubs,snuggling and pretzels,that I had raised from birth into a cat that hid under furniture and attacked people.She never recovered dying a year later .It took me 8 years before I could give my heart to another animal.Please do the research and don't trust the airlines to be on your side.Noone deserves to lose an animal especially at the negligence of someone else.

Great video! I have to travel from Japan to Washington with my cat and I’ve been doing a lot of research. Seeing you with very active, friendly cats made me feel so much more at ease! Everyone talks about these flawless 4 hour trips and I’m so nervous for this 12 hours overseas flight!!

10:15 screw that...I always take my cat out of the carrier and hold him in my lap during flights. They are so much more relaxed and calm if you do that. Most flight attendants don't have a problem with that, as long as your cat stays quietly in your lap and doesn't bother other flyers. Usually, they just say "okay, well he needs to be secured during landing". And that's correct, because as soon as a plane lands, everyone starts jostling their baggage around. There's a lot of activity and movement, and you need to be ready to deboard.
Taking my pet out of his carrier once we reach cruising altitude, in order to keep him calm, has never been a problem.
How strict are American Airlines? My cat is way less stressed on my lap
I kept a harness on each of my 2 kitties, then when I took them out clipped on their leash. Airline staff were pleased.

Even better if they're used to be on a harness.
For cats who kick and run, flight staff righteously much prefer that they kick into their carrier rather than taking a risk of a cat running on a plane, possible scratches to other people and/or hiding in some hidden corner.
You cannot blame them for that.
Their bags are color coordinated with their fur, I'm LIVING! My cat loves relaxing in her carrier...until it's closed... and in transit lol. Once the jig is up, it's a whole other story! And then the carrier is her sworn enemy for like a week 🤣.

Update! I’m rescuing to strays called Maggie and her daughter nutmeg! Maggie has warmed up to me but nutmeg is a bit scared. Now all I want to do is adopt them because they are my first foster cats, just need to convince my parents haha
Remember that you won't be able to foster as many cats if you keep some of your own unless you know they'll get along with strangers or you have enough space to keep everyone safe. Best of luck!

My cat loves traveling. I moved to Vegas and adopted him here, but would take him with me when I'd visit my parents back home. He LOVED traveling so much that he would jump right in his bag when I'd bring it out. He knew traveling meant getting to go to my parents BIG HOUSE (we lived in an apartment at the time) and playing with my mom's cat.
Ooo, I've traveled a few times with cats.
I took two young (6-month and 4-month-old) kitties with me on a cross-country flight. I did a lot of research beforehand and was glad that I found the airline would allow me to keep both cats in the same carrier, (due to their age and size) and that I'd only have to pay for one cat. I couldn't get a direct flight, but I got one with only one connecting flight that wasn't too bad. I had no idea about private screening rooms! Instead, I took an extra step to get my kitties used to leashes and harnesses in case they did try to bolt during the security checks. They had a bit of experience being in public too which helped. They cried a lot when the first flight landed, poor kitties. The sound of the engine muffled it a lot though and most people didn't realize I had cats unless I pointed them out.
The next time was another cross-country trip, this time with four cats (one elderly needing medication every twelve hours, and three young cats) and a dog. It was an interesting trip, much more difficult but it was more cost effective for us to do it that way. Everything turned out alright and I think we're done moving around finally.

I am fostering a kitten that was found in my Dad’s store under a tractor called a kuboda. We took him to the vet and he had a 50/50 chance of surviving. We named him Kuboda, and he lives in my Gram’s bathroom for now. He is doing super well and I’ve done things you’ve done with your kittens! Thank you for helping us!
Yay good job kitties!! I’ve flown with my cats multiple times, this video helps so much!! I would also recommend maybe getting a harness so it is easier to hold on to your cat if they do escape, or if you have to go through public security. Also if your cat has bad anxiety I’ve found it helps to put a blanket over the carrier so they don’t get anxious with all the commotion happening throughout the airport!!

Small babies have pain in their ears on a plane, so they cry and it's not really their fault.
Older brats screaming and kicking other people in the back of their seats should be banned on a plane. Also you never know if someone is traveling with/for medical issues and how it can be painful for their body to get these wild hits.
Adults with same behaviour as brats: banned, too.

Many good tips! My added tip is to also have a harness on the cat while travelling (My cats where used to them beforehand). Then it's easy to hook on a leash if need arise to take them out or to get a hold of them without hurting them if they try to escape.

Thank you, I'm making the move from the US to France in 3 weeks so this video was very informative, especially about the individual screening room (that was one of my biggest worries). Planning ahead has been crucial, vaccination and medical certificates are required (3 weeks) prier to traveling. Also, call the airlines (I'm traveling on two different airlines) and check the size of the cabin (under the seat) space. There are general standards requirements but some planes have smaller cabin space, thus my first flight I booked only allowed 13x13x8 bags. I spent many hours on the phone and ended up booking a flight with an 18x11x9. I have a vet plan for my cat's medication during, and after the flight to relax her...wish I had one for myself!

We already had a flight booked to visit my mom first week in July so we decided to take him with us. Our two resident cats will stay with our cat sitter. 5:16 I actually had similar experience. Before we took my cat to the vet to get neutered, we left out the carrier for a day. When the time came to take him, he was comfortably seated, and we just had to zip it!It wasn't such an easy experience the second time we took him to the vet..

We took a day flight but it got delayed for several hours and became a night flight =( Sometimes things are just out of your control.
I took a 12 hour flight with my cat overseas + a transfer flight, nothing you can do about that. However, for my noisy cat you couldn't even hear him in the white noise of the plane. And he was so frightened most of the time he was quiet.
I feel bad for those parents with crying babies, you can't control it.
Do you plan on buying the tickets for all these people you're addressing...? No? Okay, then shut up.

If a baby or small child is crying, it might be that the air pressure change is hurting their ears. Having a child chew gum will cause them to swallow, which will equalize the pressure in their ears. To get the baby to swallow, breast-feed the baby or give the baby a bottle or pacifier to suck. On a flight one time, I had to raise my voice to call out to a parent to give the baby something to suck because the parents hadn't heard about that.

I made a 4 day cross country 2000 miles drive with my 3 cats when we moved. I made sure to send all of our belongings ahead of us. I have a hatchback car so I late down the back seats and strapped 3 carriers in along the edges. I put a litter box in the back corner. Taped food and water bowls to the side if one of the carriers. Once we got on the road, I took the wire doors off each of the carriers so they could come out if they wanted. They did really well! They spent most of their time longing ontop of the carriers, looking out the windows, or cuddling in the carriers to nap. They stayed getting restless by the end of the 3rd day. And they knew when we finally arrived because they quickly went to their carriers and waited to be taken out of the car.
I don’t have cats, but I do travel by air with my two guinea pigs for Christmas and summer vacation and I follow the exact same steps as you do! Thankfully my flights home are only 1 hour and a half long, they’re very comfy down at my feet inside their carrier ☺️
My mum won't let me foster cats, but says we can foster dogs instead. She always said we could foster after our 18 year old kitten onion dies. I keep asking her why we can't foster kittens instead of puppies, and she just gives be irrational answers like "oh, well I don't want the house over run with cats." Or "but it will pee and poop everywhere" and every time I say that dogs will be more rowdy, and they will pee just as much, but she doesn't listen and says "It's my house" I don't know to do or how to convince her. I know that kittens are much more in need. Can you help??

I know this is an old video, but I watched it to prepare for my move with my cat (Canada to Germany). Hannah, I can't thank you enough for your tips. I followed all your advice, from getting my cat used to the carrier to requesting the private screening room, to giving him a low dose of gabapentin, ... My cat was really calm during the flight and it was a less stressful experience than anticipated!

I moved from pennsylvania to florida with my cat (driving), and we drove back to PA for christmas, and drove back to florida after. She is the best travel buddy! So chilled and never scared. She used to be scared of traveling but i used treats to calm her and now she doesnt mind at all

I love how Coco was already comfy in the carrier ready for take off! 🛫 I haven’t flown in ages but whenever it’s time to go to the vet my kitten usually sees the carrier and jumps in. He likes to chill in it even at home
I did fly with my cat once (no other choice). This was long ago and she had to fly in the pilot area so I couldn't be with her. She was so stressed out after this that she did not poop for 5 days. I was so worried and I did do almost all of the suggestions given here. Great video. Thank you!

I'm so lucky I've never had to go far with my fur babies! I would be so stressed and worried for my babies. The only times I've had to travel with my kitty is short distances.

She's very attached to me and she's terrified of other people and animals, and she's used to me being there every night and most days. Thank you for all that info. I was really freaking out. We're traveling on December with my two cats and the part of the x rays was driving me nuts. Knowing that we can ask for a private room is a good thing to know. I am ready but I'm really scared they're gonna freak out. But, hearing it from an expert calms me down a 90% 😋
How to fly with your cat:
1. Procure a cardboard airplane
2. Place kitten in the cardboard airplane.
3. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I have a college cat who's also my ESA and she always comes home with me when we visit home. I got quite lucky with her as she's completely quiet once she's in her carrier and strapped in the back seat of my car. I've had cats that meow the entire time they are traveling like Haroun, but really I think Haroun was just providing some in-flight entertainment!

I have this carrier that has a little zip window on the front, just big enough to stick a couple of fingers in. I find that it really helps with my cats start getting anxious, because once I put my fingers in they seem to calm down a lot.
