Military Model Trains, Boats and Tanks: Second World War Diorama Operation Abyss

- James Styles is a railway enthusiast living in United Kingdom. Four years ago, his vision was to produce a model railway layout and fiddle yard on a board that is 96.0 inches long by 14.5 inches wide. He then wanted to produce something a little different from the normal micro layouts. While sitting watching a D-Day special on TV it hit him: The idea was born to produce a World War II themed harbour and a military-themed dockside.
He knew immediately, his Second World War dockside diorama, which is called “Operation Abyss”, will neither be a railway layout to please the rivet counters nor was it intended to be a true interpretation or historically accurate to what happened. However, the beginning was to buy a torpedo boat made by Airfix. James framed his entire wartime diorama around this torpedo boat. He added soldiers chatting, standing on guard and even repairing an armoured vehicle.
James even has used several of his old model trains including his first-ever locomotive, a Hornby “Smokey Joe” steam locomotive. This locomotive is 25 years old and he stripped the steam loco, cleaned it and repainted it in War Department livery. He then changed the wheels and fitted it with a carefully programmed DCC decoder. At the Warley National Model Railway Exhibition James presented his military diorama, so that Pilentum has made this video using the camera “RunCam 5” for making the cab ride video footage.

Military Themes seem to be really catching on . . . Great opportunity to model the infamous Rail Gun
Overall theme, details, military soldiers, vehicles, docking area was great. Sound was well heard while giving one the “ feel” of actually being along the dock.Colors used were spot on as well.👍👍

Absolutely amazing and I doff my hat to Mr Styles' sense of humour - where else would you see a German rail gun roll serenely past British troops and flatbeds loaded with British materiel? Excellent sir!
That's not a German gun, it's a British rail gun produced in 2019 by Oxford Rail. The chassis is front the Great War, but the gun barrel was a replacement for the 39-45 conflict. It was ordinarily based in Kent, but it never fired a shot in anger so it seems.

There were two built for the 1914-18 war. They were known as 'Bosche Busters'. By 1939 only one chassis remained. So a new gun was fitted. No idea what happened to it afterwards though.

The detailing and weathering are super, and love the camera work at ground level. I hope mine turns out as good but I am working with about 700 square feet of train set.

Excellent layout with lots of detail Only thing wrong in place is the rail gun. 😉
And the light tank in the same display as a Sherman and the Valiant figures. If you want to see a great WWII display find Pete Goss's display with bautiful ly modelled buildings and figures to a constant scale.
I think that was my Uncle Bud standing guard by that truck.

The cannon car is much more easy and convenient to haul than the real one was.
Great sound design. I love the detail and aging in all models.
When filming. If you want the trains to look heavier and look smoother, try experimenting with running them slightly faster and slow the footage down in the edit. It all looks great though.
I love that style of track that you use, what is it called, the type where the rail goes through bricks like that

I model in N and am working on something similar (well... I'm primarily at the benchwork stage right now) and Im eyeing in jealousy that Leopold.
Only one I could affordably find was Dragon Model's kit, but it's stationary. Trying my best with me limited skills to make it movable lol

Absolutely beautifully made, but why are the trains moving so unevenly? Extreme acceleration and braking combined with juddering shouldn‘t really be necessary anymore!
If you know anything about ho scale rolling stock, it’s not easy to achieve prototype speed...lots of factors like engine torque at low speed and truck lubrication can prevent smooth operation...great layout!
