What a rare little thing . So good to see a 90's Luke warm hatch . It does a certain charm about it . Remember those fondly along with the 106 Rallye . Thanks for sharing .
    Proper little drivers cars

Yes, this is a very rare car indeed, especially in such lightly modified form! It is a bit of handful to drive, as the brakes are not very good and there is no power steering, but it is pretty wonderful.

I had friends with modified ones that would do silly speeds as they weigh nothing. Very spartan, crap brakes and interesting handling as standard. Great car. Love the no frills dash and clocks

Yes, very fast with terrible brakes! Bit like a 2.8 Capri, actually. If you drive them hard, though, they are quite rewarding. You need proper muscles to manoeuvre one, though! The pre-facelift ones had even sparser instruments than this. Did you see the full review we did?

the mk2 was good but i feel it was the mk3 which came a year later really really took the polo to another level, and won a lot of awards in the process. Also the punto mk1 wasnt far behind but i preferred the polo.

Yes, my first car was a 1998 Polo 1.4 CL, which I shared with my twin sister. We had it for about five years. It was an enormous step up in quality of materials, interior design, safety and comfort over a Mk2. Still quite austere by modern standards with lots of hard black plastic in the interior despite all that, though! You still see masses of them around too. The Mark 4, which was essentially a very heavy facelift of the Mark 3, had a much more stylish interior and upped the quality again. The Punto was a huge step up over the Uno, but like you, I preferred the Polo!

Yes, standard BBS alloys on a G40! It has been slightly lowered, but is otherwise pretty standard.

Thanks very much indeed! I was blessed to be offered this for review by a channel viewer in December, so sadly it isn't mine, but the owner has had two of these beforehand and he intends to keep it in excellent condition!

Nice car, don't see many of these nowadays. Plenty of space to work on the engine. Be interesting to see it in action.

Thanks Matt! Glad you like it. The full review should be up next week. Yes, even with this G40 version, there is a lot of space in the engine bay!
