Tasty Chips Electronics GR-1 -- preliminary noodlings

  • Hello! Thanks for watching this video, or at least considering watching. This is yet another noodling video with a new toy. The Tasty Chips GR-1 granular synthesizer. A granular synthesizer breaks an audio file into tiny pieces of wheat, or on occasion barley. All audio is direct from the GR-1 into a Focusrite Scarlett 18i6 with no additional processing (other than normalization.) My GR-1 was on firmware version 1.1.8 for this video.
    I thought it might be useful to hear the original sample before the GR-1 patch that uses it, so I included them in the video. Hope its not too annoying.
    The GR-1 can process live audio, but I need to get a suitable USB audio interface to try it. Another feature of the GR-1 I have yet to try are the two CV inputs. This could open up some fun control possibilities with modular gear.
    A nice thing is that every parameter on the GR-1 is controllable via MIDI CC. This is shown at 7:15 where the sample position and filter cutoff are controlled with the Casio XW-P1's step sequencer control tracks. Not that you can really tell, it's not a good example of MIDI control really with the arpeggiator happening. I should've made a clearer example of that.
    Apologies if the audio and video don't align exactly, I tried my best to line them up. :)

    I appreciate you playing the original sample before running it in the GR-1. I know I came in here 5 years after the fact, but I just got a used GR-1! Thanks for the video.

    PERFECT demo, mate. No talking, egos, acting like a dipshit on camera, no clickbait, lousy audio through a phone. Just the synthesis. And included the original samples too! Subscribed, keep it up.

    Thank you for making this showcase video! It’s the best example of what the GR-1 can do.

    Theee best demo of this incredible hands on device. Yes, you can do something like this in M4L or Padshop etc, but this is dedicated hardware and it truly has a sound of it’s own.

    This is amazing! Good job! Nice that you put original samples. Sometimes it's hard to believe that such a great sounds are created from a regular sample. Like the first one or Kawai k1m. This thing adds so much complexity to the sound... I'm more and more convinced about this product, even though peoples opinion is that it is overpriced and you can do the same with vsts..

    I want one! Granular sampling is the next best thing after full resynthesis. This thing combined with modeled resonators would get very close to my ultimate synth. The new Waldorf Quantum might come even closer to that ideal but it is very expensive. This one however is decently priced, already sounds awesome as it is and has a VERY intuitive user interface. Yep, I surely want one!

    how good is the GR-1 in the low end? some pure digital machines are pretty weak there when it come to samples (and one reason for still using vintage sampler btw...)?
    In short: how good is the Lowpass filter ?&
    Thanks for this - it illustrates very well that you'll get really interesting stuff out of relatively one dimensional input.

    If the sample is played lower does it make it slower, also if a sound is looped and it is played lower, does the looping get slower, and if so, is there a way to turn that off

  • @krakou2
    @krakou2 Před 6 lety +1

    Were the polyphonic bits recorded chords or can you turn mono into poly within the gr-1?

    • @marcbrasse747
      @marcbrasse747 Před 6 lety +2

      Although the very first example seems to include some keyboard playing most are just producing sound while in autorepeat. Then all the grains repeats and stereo pannings are 1 voice. If you actually see 2 hands in the picture you can be pretty shure about it anyway because that probably means nobody is playing a the keyboard. If I am correct it is presently 16-voice on top of that. So it will indeed turn every monosample into something that can be played polyphonically. Because full phrases are recorded it however often seems to do a lot more already then just loop / repeat /granulate one sample.

    • @marcbrasse747
      @marcbrasse747 Před 5 lety

      I think you do not get it. Of course people are doing a lot of freaky stuff just by chance but one can also use this to isolate a singlt tone/note from sample and then play real musical parts on it. It basically does what older samplers could not do and only first became widely availble via Roland's V-processor technology: Duration and tuning of samples can be detached from achother. And one also get 's rid of much of the old hassle of looking for looppoints. If you have ever worked with a 80's samplar you know what I mean. So for creative sampling it is spot on.
