  • Moons of Madness reviewed by Matt Kim on PC.
You can tell that a lot of great Lovecraftian games are crafted with love for the 20th-century writer's vision of horror, but Moons of Madness often feels more like an interactive movie than a video game. I can't help but wonder if it could have been more successful with its scares if it were non-interactive. The story is decent but unfocused, and the presence of gameplay that's rarely more than busywork hurts the atmosphere more than it helps. I was often left feeling as cold as the planet it's set on.

Nowadays if there's any, it just for multiplayer games. Perhaps they will never do that for SP in order to honor the voice actor? Still, I would like to have this option.

Just beat the game and I have to disagree with the reviewer. The game is slow, yes, but it's for a purpose. You're just some dude on Mars, possibility just a clone too. Lovecraftian horror is BASED on the fear of the unknown. Leaving all of these plot points open with the dreaming ones, ctuhulu, and everything else is for that point. It's another walking-esque simulator, but similarly to The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, it's about the world and narrative given, and not the gameplay itself.

Because proper Lovecraft is typically complex and leaves questions. That makes it tough to convey to a team or pitch to investors and an audience. How does one explain the "unfathomable" quickly? These days, people often want things which are easily categorized.
Another thing, video games are most often based around empowerment and wish fulfillment. That doesn't mix with Lovecraft at all. You just can't feel as helpless with a rifle, shotgun, SMG, flamethrower, grenades, and magical health kits.
Also, Cthulu doesn't have a health bar. That simply wouldn't work. There can't be the hope of destroying it. Sure, allowing the player to think that only to have their hopes dashed when their attack had no effect would be great. However, they would likely turn that into a quick time event or even a cinematic to make sure the players "experienced" it (despite, you know, through gameplay which video games are one of the very few mediums which can allow that).
Just thoughts from a random person...
Edit: I would like to see it happen but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

If you like lovecraftian/Deadspace stuff you’ll like it.
It follows the same beats. You’re an engineer doing tasks to help keep things together. But at the same time I think it fixes somethings that Deadspace messed up on. You’re not a super soldier who can use every gun in the universe. You’re just a guy doing his best to survive.
They do seem to drop some story lines though and the ending was a bit disappointing. It acts like there’s one more act coming and then just ends. :/

@@Cavirex All true. It was all about when to use weapons and when to run. A decision that would determine several things at once like how hard the game will be later on. Something I found out multiple times in Alien: Isolation.

-Heh, if I’m in a real life horror situation, I’m at least picking up a Bat. But say a 700 lbs Bear is after me, fuk if I’m gonna fight it with a Bat. But a rabbit dog would get the business... till like 5 more show up. There’s a balance, Humans have a natural Fight or Flight you have to tune into to bring out real fear. Even if we stand out ground, doesn’t mean we aren’t scared... we just don’t wanna die.

"Horrifyingly simple" says the simpleton who cannot create anything even remotely as detailed as the game he is reviewing.

Yeah cause you're not allowed to critique something if you can't make it yourself. Wtf?

@@seadog327 Not SO harshly, especially when some of the critique is overexaggerated, which is obvious from the footage.

    This game is full of stuttering. Unplayable. And I've got a GTX 1070 8 GB, 4 x 8 GB DDR4 2400 MHz, Ryzen 5 1600, 250 GB SSD + 1TB hybrid drive, windows 10 pro.
