  • Lighting circuits can seem confusing to some people, in this video I explain what the loop in at the ceiling rose, loop in at the switch and loop in at the junction box look like. The loop in method is often used when wiring lighting circuits in the UK.

Because as an FE lecturer he'd be earning 50% or more less than he earns at the minute. Further education in the UK is a shambles - do you think the Conservatives pay money into an education system that only really serves working class kids? Every-time they offer tax cuts in peoples income that money has to come somewhere - FE education is one place that has basically subsidised everyone else's tax cuts.

Thanks Ultimate Handyman - I turned 40 a couple of years ago and as mandated by law I now wear old clothes rather than new clothes and spend a lot of time in my garage. I taught myself Carpentry (via CZcams) and learning my DIY skills - which you have helped out a lot on, but electrics have always mystified me. I extended the light circuit into space above my garage - but I just did it as one circuit (as I didn't understand the switch wires), but I may revisit this after seeing your video.
Thanks for taking the time to do these videos - we see 10 minutes of video - but we understand there the huge amount of effort of planning, editing, compiling these videos that you undertake to help out your grateful audience. These videos really do help a lot of people like me who are just starting out in DIY. I seem to recall your video around removed cross-threaded screws being very helpful. So thank you for everything you do and when you see CZcams are barely paying you anything for your work - there are many thousands of grateful people out there that you've helped.

I always knew that switching is always on the live side but didn't know until your excellent video that there were so many ways to loop in for switching. Having moved into a house with loop connections in an existing big 1970's ceiling fitting via nylon blocks, there was clearly no way that all three blocks would fit in a standard sized rose, so have pulled all cables up into the loft and am attempting the joint box method there. Thanks for such a detailed video.

Awesome, thanks ever so much for sharing the knowledge! Would I be right in saying that, if want to add a new light into my loft, I would need to split the outgoing cable from an existing light, then wire both new ends into a junction box, as well as one for the new switch and one for the new light fitting?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  Před 5 lety +1

Basically run a cable to the circuit wire, you can do this at a ceiling rose, or junction box.
Run the cable with the L,N and earth to the switch.
Run another cable to the light from the switch and connect up L,N and earth.
Then at the switch connect the two Neutrals together, then connect the earths to the earth terminal.
Put the two remaining live wires in the L1 terminal and the com terminal
      I hope this makes sense?

I wonder if you have any thoughts on a switch that didn't turn on ceiling light and so after a lot of time spent trying to solve the issue, we bypassed it with a pull light fitting (fan type) which does work but is not very attractive. I want to put a new light fitting up and get the switch to work. Is it just a case of trial and error or should I replace everything? All other light switches and sockets work in the room and in the house... bizarre!

Funny you uploaded this as I fitted a new light switch earlier and managed to give myself a belt due to switching off the wrong mcb doh. Might have been a good idea to explain why upgrading to a cu with rcd protection is very wise. I'm glad I had rcd protection today ;).

      I'll cover CU's soon ;-)

@@ultimatehandyman Might be easier to cover the proper safe isolation procedure ;)

Great video. If you don't mind explaining. I'm trying to add an additional out door light (never one installed in property). Could you briefly explain how I would go about this. Do I add a junction box outside and daisy chain the light fitting from the closest inside ceiling rose? But then do I just add a separate switch or will my existing 3 switch in side activate it automatically when I turn on bottom light switch?

I'm afraid it is not a simple answer. Your best bet would be to ask here, it's free to join-

Thanks for another great video. Is there a website or app where you can draw and test simple circuits? I'd like to slowly practice what you've just showed us.
Also any tips or videos on using multimeter to diagnose a non working outside light fitting? It seems to be on its own circuit with a switch.

I don't know about any sites for drawing circuits, or Apps- sorry!
I've done a couple of videos on multi-meters-
      Continuity test- czcams.com/video/k6SqGcXYmLw/video.html
      Measuring voltage- czcams.com/video/QceiqobvQLc/video.html

You have to be careful with outside lights as some people wire them to the lighting circuit, or the socket circuit.
You might be better off using a non contact voltage tester to ensure the light is getting power, if it is you might be better off isolating the light and replacing it with a new one (assuming you have already checked the lamp)

Hi great vid chez.wanted to know how would you wire a outside pir floodlght? would it be better to wire in to a light switch? many thanks

Thanks, normally the easiest way is to use a flex cable, through the wall, then wire a plug to the end of it and plug it into a nearby socket.
      Thanks for the comment

When wiring a LED batten lighting a garage that is on the main lighting ring would I have to use a junction box to connect to the switch, as I cannot understand how you could bring the feed in one end and the switch line out the other whilst keeping the continuity of the ring. Have a good xmas

No, you don't need a ring circuit for lights, they are a radial circuit.
You don't need a junction box, at the light fitting you have the live cable with the L,N,E wires.
Neutral and earth go into their respective terminals. The live goes into a terminal connector (not connected to the light terminal). Then a cable is run to the switch, earth is connected to the earth terminal. The live is connected to the other live in the terminal block. Then the neutral wire is sheathed with Brown sleeving and placed into the L terminal on the fitting. Obviously the switch is installed at the other end of the switch cable.
      Thanks for the comment 👍

Good video. Can I ask you a question. In my new flat I have a couple of double dimmer switches both with two wires going into. In each room I have a number of spot lights and one of the dimmers on each switch turns all the lights on at one. The other dimmer switch does not do anything. When looking at the back the switch live cable from each goes into the com port. The live cable go into each L1 position. Plus there is a loop cable going from one L1 port into the other L1 port. Please can you advise the purpose if possible of the other dimmer switch. Many thanks

Are the two dimmers on the same circuit?
You can only use one dimmer per light circuit, if I remember rightly.
