My takeaway here: Politicians and diplomats need to find every way possible to keep wars from happening. Those numbers are to the nearest hundred thousand people killed. A sheer estimate to the scale of a city the size of Albany NY. Every person in it, and we literally do not know whether that many people lived or died in 10 different countries. For the whole world, a million people may or may not have died and or existed. The scale of devastation was such that people, their known contracts, and records of one million people were lost to history. War must be the absolute last resort, and made to have the most crystal clear, finite, achievable and as limited as possible objectives. Sincerely, combat vet.

As an Indian, this is not even our war but were dragged into this by the Britishers. 2.5 million losses.....hardly 5-10% people of India know the contribution of India in WW2. There was a civil war going on in China as well as the Japanese invasion. The controlling nationalist party was fighting CCP guerilla warfare as well as the Japanese so I'm guessing this is why the casualty figures are so high. Chiang Kai Shek was eventually defeated by the CCP and fled to Taiwan.
A lot of troops. When the war truly began in 1937, the Japanese committed 300k troops at Shanghai alone compared to 700k troops in China. In the 1939-1940 winter offensive, the Japanese was said to have 850k men and in 1944 during operation Ichi-go Japan deployed 1 million men. China saw the largest concentration of Japanese troops, eclipsing all the other fronts combined. In contrast, the largest concentration of Japanese the American face was in the Philipines, and the Japanese only had 500k men for a whole country. How brutal was the fighting ? Think world war 1, on steroid. On one hand you got the Chinese: an army whose only three strengths were a/inexhaustible supply of men, b/some decent generals (Xue Yue, Sun Li-jen, Wang Yao-Wu, Sun Lianzhong), and c/A massive interior so hard to traverse the Soviet Union looked like route 66. The Chinese was basically like the Russian empire army during WW1, only with more disunity, more in-fighting, less support, worse arms and equipment. Against them were die-hard Japanese who were also bickering and whose generals were also hopelessly useless in many cases (Yakaoma and Toshizo came to mind). It saw urban warfare terrible like that of Stalingrad (Shanghai, Changsa, Changde), massive trench warfare with massive use of biological and chemical weapons like World war 1, large scale extermination of population worse than even the Holocaust (the Chinese even drowned a million of their citizens by breaking the yellow river dam to stop the Japanese), and guerilla warfare that looked like Vietnam minus Napalm and helicopter playing Fortunate son. The morale of the Japanese troops in China is actually pretty bad. To be fair, both sides were fanatical: Chinese troops banzaied charge against the Japanese and had Dare-to-die corps who strapped grenades to them and try to run to tanks and blow themselves up. But it is true that Japanese morale in China was weaker because of the bleak aspect of war, the long slugging nature of the war so on and so forth. Many Japanese on the Pacific Islands fought to the death while many in China surrendered. The most famous example was the Kwantung army during Operation August storm: 500-700k men surrendered without any major resistance, the largest number of Japanese POW captured in history. More Japanese were captured in that one operation than all of Japanese POWS in every single foreign war Japan fought in, combined. It was a great source of shame for the Japanese who, until this day, refused to release the number of POWs captured in Manchuria. If China did not join the war, the American is fucked, hard. End of story. China was such a large sink of men and material that the Japanese could not send all her might to elsewhere. Not only that, China forced the Japanese to open the Burma-India front to cut supply through the Burma road for China, forcing her to bleed even more men and materiel. Think how hard would the Island hopping strategy be for the Americans if Japan could shift all her forces down South. Think how hard would it be for the Americans if they landed on Okinawa to find 200k Japanese, not 70k, on that island. Or into the Philippines and found 1 million, not 500k, Japanese there. And these Japanese would be way better armed, way better supplied since now most of the good stuffs were not expended in a war against China but could be used against America. In short, China was a shield that bore the brunt so America could strike Japan down with more ease.
China didn't "join" the war because they were helping out. Japan invaded China and China was defending their land and paid a high price just as the Soviet Union did fighting Germany who invaded them. China fought in China simply because the Japanese were there. Also, Japan attacked the USA or the USA wouldn't have needed to fight Japan. Don't be like people who want to take credit for everything and discredit other nations. The USA did what they needed to do. Playing "what ifs" doesn't accomplish anything.
The losses of the Soviet army during the Winter War were ~50-170 thousand killed (depending on sources), during the Polish campaign ~1.5-3 thousand were killed. It is not clear why by the beginning of the war on the Eastern Front the USSR already had almost 3 million losses, besides, the losses of the Finnish side do not reflect reality - even according to official Finnish data they estimate their losses at 26 thousand killed and 43 thousand wounded.
Those numbers include Stalin's purges within the country. Between 1922 and Stalin' death in the early 50s, he murdered nearly 20 million of his own people whom he suspected of "disloyalty".

Wow I actually always thought China played only a minor role in ww2 and had only losses from something I learned in history class as the rape of Nanking I think. I may be misspelling this. I always thought Japan,and the United States, accounted for about an equal amount of the losses that were tied for the 2nd most and Germany and Russia were tied for the most losses and everyone else just played a small role. Japan did control large sections of China....but in areas not controlled...Japan captured all the big coastal cities...... If you colored China white....you'd see large red area under jap control...large red area in south near today's Vietnam....then you'd see red polka dots all up the China Coast....all the coastal cities under Jap control And, let's say life wasn't pleasant for the Chinese in any of those cities
The USA hardly lost any soldiers and almost zero civilians. American industry won ww2 and was the only winner of the war. Soviets and China were victorious but lost more than Japan or Germany. At least the Germans admitted their faults honestly, unlike Japan that still lives in denial of its evil.

WWII in the Philippines started in December 8, 1941, when Imperial Japan bombarded the islands. But by December 1, 1941, the Philippines' casualties are already more than 250,000. Where did you get your source about these? Did you include the casualties from the Philippine-American War which happened 40 years prior.
This graph is bogus. It is showing France as having lost less than 9,000 people after the battle of France was already over. That battle took over 70,000 French lives.

What the did when they made this video is take the total number of casualties for a nation and divide the death rate evenly from September 1, 1939 when the Nazis invaded Poland to the day Japan surrendered in 1945. Therefore it shows people dying in their countries years before they even got into the war. To say that this is inaccurate is the understatement of the century. It's lazy, sloppy and had almost nothing to do with reality.
We still don't know exact numbers - because warfare was so brutal and devastating, that often it was impossible to keep track of all losses (plus lots of info was lost - that was time of paper documents and archives, there were no such fixation systems as nowadays, and etc.). Historians did huge works on trying to find precise numbers - and yet we still have several versions, each with aproximate numbers

A nice project. Though the format is misleading. There seems to be a depiction of steady growth across all values, even during periods of no historically recorded military activity taking place. Soviets entry into the war was September 17, 1939 when they - along with their short-term ally nazi germany - invaded Poland from the east along with Hitler (who invaded on Sept 1 1939 from the west.) Remember that Soviet numbers are all cooked up! They’re literally including millions of “nazi victims” were actually soviet/russian victims. soviet union henchmen (NKVD/KGB and the rape army some referred to as red army) literally murdered Finns, Estonians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Poles, etc., etc. and then counted them as soviet (or their own) “casualties” since they’d annexed those countries as their own. So basically they murdered them and then blamed nazis for doing it (I.e. Katyń massacre just one example) To this day the west keeps pumping up the Soviet propaganda numbers. Yes, many people in Soviet U died - BUT a huge percentage of them were non-Russians murdered by soviets themselves. (PS. To be clear - Nazi germany was equally evil)
The timeline stuff seems off, like germany is also presented with a million death befor barbarossa, but in france and poland together she didnt even lost 100,000 man(excluding wounded casulties).
Actually the numbers are averaged over the entire war instead of in spurts. Notice that European belligerents' numbers keep rolling until the 2nd of September, 1945 even though their war ended on VE Day, May 8, 1945. Also note that the numbers don't jump up after a major battle such as D-Day or Stalingrad.

Well, during that time they peace-loving Soviet Union invaded not only Poland but also Finland, and annexed Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia and Cernovic, before they were made to taste their own medicine. And I believe they also had issues with the Japanese in Manchuria.

Estonia, Latvia and Lithiania were got through succesful communistic coups in those countries, there were no military action at all there. Parts of Moldavia also were got through diplomatic issues without any warfare. War with Finland started only on 30 November of 1939, and finished on 12 March 1940, so went for three and a half month only (even in video you can see that it would bring far less than 1.5 million losses). Invasion of Poland also went without any big battles and losses, as absolute majority of polish army were on the western front at that moment, and most polish troops on the eastern side prefered to surrender. So in fact, I have not a single clue where authors of that video have taken 1.5 million losses before 1941.
@@maximkretsch7134 Purge in army happened in 1937-1938, and touched around 15,000-16,000 people, most of which were not executed, but fired from the army with forbiddance to work in military anymore (yes, in reality Stalin's purges were far less drastic than stereotypes and propaganda usually paints them). Couple of points: I remember reading that 40 million people died during WWII. In this graph, China & the USSR alone totaled way more than that. How did the Philippines loose 200,000 killed before the US was even attacked by the Japanese? Doesn’t make sense. The Philippines were a protectorate of the US and were not attacked before Dec 1941. Yet they show 200,000 dead already before that date. Numbers are a little screwy, I think.

True but suffering 400,000 military deaths over 3 and a half years of combat is by no means small and would be considered high in any other conflict outside of a world war. The same can be said of the UK. Our death toll looks small in comparison to some other countries but when you think 1 in 90 Brits were killed it puts it into perspective.

The OP for the video has Japanese caused Philippine deaths at 250K in 1940. It's not super surprising that the 2 countries with the 2 largest population and the most inept leadership were at the top of this list. The is a perfect example of how focusing on ideology/politics instead of merit and results can have a major effect on loss of life. Um, most of China's casualties were civilians, not military. Japanese committed horrific atrocities everywhere they went, and China took the full brunt of it. At least half of Soviet casualties was actually military, which was partly due to Stalins decision not to ready his troops for war as well as his decision to purge his military right before the German invasion. This resulted in entire armies being encircled by the Germans. That said, both sides did see inporportionate casualties compared to their enemies, but that's due to differences in fire disparity. Both armies had well throughout plans other than to just "throw men at the problem". The "human wave" hypothesis has been debunked for decades.

This was not only done because they had a massive population to draw from, but as a psychological weapon. Most of the soldiers in those waves were lucky of they were given a grande. WWII NRA infantry (which BTW, is the predecessor of the ROCA in Taiwan) was highly regarded by the IJA, Masanobu Tsuji rates them as the best infantry second to the Japanese. Their deficiencies lie with their lack of heavy equipment including artillery, but their infantry were experienced fighters. Chinese troops had been fighting a series of civil wars for decades and had no shortage of veterans. Likewise, the Korean War PVA also had no shortage of veterans and conducted night infiltration tactics to encircle UN forces. The US Army green book describes the PVA as "skilled enemy light infantry troops", "well-trained disciplined fire fighters," "particularly adept at night fighting", and "were masters of the art of camouflage."

Back then, China was Manchuria and had been at war and occupied by Japan since 1935. So it's not really a part of what we think of being WW II . WW II was really considered to include the European, Pacific and African theatres of war. The Pacific theater included Asian theatres where Japan was already occupying.

Those aren't likely all WWII related, they are probably mixing in civilians killed by Mao seperate and apart from the War. The Japanese invaded and ruled Manchuria, but I highly doubt that 20+ million died from the Japanese invasion.

A sheer estimate to the scale of a city the size of Albany NY. Every person in it, and we literally do not know whether that many people lived or died in 10 different countries. For the whole world, a million people may or may not have died and or existed. The scale of devastation was such that people, their known contracts, and records of one million people were lost to history.
War must be the absolute last resort, and made to have the most crystal clear, finite, achievable and as limited as possible objectives.

There was a civil war going on in China as well as the Japanese invasion. The controlling nationalist party was fighting CCP guerilla warfare as well as the Japanese so I'm guessing this is why the casualty figures are so high.
Chiang Kai Shek was eventually defeated by the CCP and fled to Taiwan.

A lot of troops. When the war truly began in 1937, the Japanese committed 300k troops at Shanghai alone compared to 700k troops in China. In the 1939-1940 winter offensive, the Japanese was said to have 850k men and in 1944 during operation Ichi-go Japan deployed 1 million men. China saw the largest concentration of Japanese troops, eclipsing all the other fronts combined. In contrast, the largest concentration of Japanese the American face was in the Philipines, and the Japanese only had 500k men for a whole country.
How brutal was the fighting ? Think world war 1, on steroid. On one hand you got the Chinese: an army whose only three strengths were a/inexhaustible supply of men, b/some decent generals (Xue Yue, Sun Li-jen, Wang Yao-Wu, Sun Lianzhong), and c/A massive interior so hard to traverse the Soviet Union looked like route 66. The Chinese was basically like the Russian empire army during WW1, only with more disunity, more in-fighting, less support, worse arms and equipment. Against them were die-hard Japanese who were also bickering and whose generals were also hopelessly useless in many cases (Yakaoma and Toshizo came to mind). It saw urban warfare terrible like that of Stalingrad (Shanghai, Changsa, Changde), massive trench warfare with massive use of biological and chemical weapons like World war 1, large scale extermination of population worse than even the Holocaust (the Chinese even drowned a million of their citizens by breaking the yellow river dam to stop the Japanese), and guerilla warfare that looked like Vietnam minus Napalm and helicopter playing Fortunate son.
The morale of the Japanese troops in China is actually pretty bad. To be fair, both sides were fanatical: Chinese troops banzaied charge against the Japanese and had Dare-to-die corps who strapped grenades to them and try to run to tanks and blow themselves up. But it is true that Japanese morale in China was weaker because of the bleak aspect of war, the long slugging nature of the war so on and so forth. Many Japanese on the Pacific Islands fought to the death while many in China surrendered. The most famous example was the Kwantung army during Operation August storm: 500-700k men surrendered without any major resistance, the largest number of Japanese POW captured in history. More Japanese were captured in that one operation than all of Japanese POWS in every single foreign war Japan fought in, combined. It was a great source of shame for the Japanese who, until this day, refused to release the number of POWs captured in Manchuria.
If China did not join the war, the American is fucked, hard. End of story. China was such a large sink of men and material that the Japanese could not send all her might to elsewhere. Not only that, China forced the Japanese to open the Burma-India front to cut supply through the Burma road for China, forcing her to bleed even more men and materiel. Think how hard would the Island hopping strategy be for the Americans if Japan could shift all her forces down South. Think how hard would it be for the Americans if they landed on Okinawa to find 200k Japanese, not 70k, on that island. Or into the Philippines and found 1 million, not 500k, Japanese there. And these Japanese would be way better armed, way better supplied since now most of the good stuffs were not expended in a war against China but could be used against America. In short, China was a shield that bore the brunt so America could strike Japan down with more ease.

China didn't "join" the war because they were helping out. Japan invaded China and China was defending their land and paid a high price just as the Soviet Union did fighting Germany who invaded them. China fought in China simply because the Japanese were there. Also, Japan attacked the USA or the USA wouldn't have needed to fight Japan. Don't be like people who want to take credit for everything and discredit other nations. The USA did what they needed to do. Playing "what ifs" doesn't accomplish anything.

The losses of the Soviet army during the Winter War were ~50-170 thousand killed (depending on sources), during the Polish campaign ~1.5-3 thousand were killed. It is not clear why by the beginning of the war on the Eastern Front the USSR already had almost 3 million losses, besides, the losses of the Finnish side do not reflect reality - even according to official Finnish data they estimate their losses at 26 thousand killed and 43 thousand wounded.
Those numbers include Stalin's purges within the country. Between 1922 and Stalin' death in the early 50s, he murdered nearly 20 million of his own people whom he suspected of "disloyalty".
@@shawnbasil1600 I wrote specifically about the period 1939-41 (before the invasion of Germany and its allies) that 3 million losses could not have come from there, even taking into account the deaths during this period of time in the Gulag. The famine happened earlier in 1932-33, and the Great Terror happened in 1937 (perhaps the most brutal year of Stalin’s rule).

Wow I actually always thought China played only a minor role in ww2 and had only losses from something I learned in history class as the rape of Nanking I think. I may be misspelling this. I always thought Japan,and the United States, accounted for about an equal amount of the losses that were tied for the 2nd most and Germany and Russia were tied for the most losses and everyone else just played a small role. I am from the United States. I guess my perspective of at least world wars has been shaped by my culture a good amount.

WWII in the Philippines started in December 8, 1941, when Imperial Japan bombarded the islands. But by December 1, 1941, the Philippines' casualties are already more than 250,000. Where did you get your source about these? Did you include the casualties from the Philippine-American War which happened 40 years prior.
This graph is bogus. It is showing France as having lost less than 9,000 people after the battle of France was already over. That battle took over 70,000 French lives.

What the did when they made this video is take the total number of casualties for a nation and divide the death rate evenly from September 1, 1939 when the Nazis invaded Poland to the day Japan surrendered in 1945. Therefore it shows people dying in their countries years before they even got into the war. To say that this is inaccurate is the understatement of the century. It's lazy, sloppy and had almost nothing to do with reality.

We still don't know exact numbers - because warfare was so brutal and devastating, that often it was impossible to keep track of all losses (plus lots of info was lost - that was time of paper documents and archives, there were no such fixation systems as nowadays, and etc.). Historians did huge works on trying to find precise numbers - and yet we still have several versions, each with aproximate numbers

A nice project. Though the format is misleading. There seems to be a depiction of steady growth across all values, even during periods of no historically recorded military activity taking place. The value for the ROC is similarly flawed, considering the varying political fragmentation within over the period covered. Interesting to look at, altogether, nonetheless.
It's fascinating to see Soviet casualties pile up over 6 million BEFORE Operation Barbarossa. Technically their entrance in the war. I guess the Poles and Finns did put up a mighty fight in those years from 1939 to 1941

Soviets entry into the war was September 17, 1939 when they - along with their short-term ally nazi germany - invaded Poland from the east along with Hitler (who invaded on Sept 1 1939 from the west.)

The timeline stuff seems off, like germany is also presented with a million death befor barbarossa, but in france and poland together she didnt even lost 100,000 man(excluding wounded casulties).
Actually the numbers are averaged over the entire war instead of in spurts. Notice that European belligerents' numbers keep rolling until the 2nd of September, 1945 even though their war ended on VE Day, May 8, 1945. Also note that the numbers don't jump up after a major battle such as D-Day or Stalingrad.

Well, during that time they peace-loving Soviet Union invaded not only Poland but also Finland, and annexed Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia and Cernovic, before they were made to taste their own medicine. And I believe they also had issues with the Japanese in Manchuria.

Estonia, Latvia and Lithiania were got through succesful communistic coups in those countries, there were no military action at all there. Parts of Moldavia also were got through diplomatic issues without any warfare. War with Finland started only on 30 November of 1939, and finished on 12 March 1940, so went for three and a half month only (even in video you can see that it would bring far less than 1.5 million losses). Invasion of Poland also went without any big battles and losses, as absolute majority of polish army were on the western front at that moment, and most polish troops on the eastern side prefered to surrender. So in fact, I have not a single clue where authors of that video have taken 1.5 million losses before 1941.

Facts are Churchill asked Roosevelt for help with shipping as there was grain in Australia/ Canada but he refused as it was all needed for the war. Churchill still managed to secure enough ships to get nearly a million tons of grain/ barley to Bengal from Canada, Australia and Iraq. Still , sadly not enough. Blame nature and the Japanese for that famine.

Considering the American impact on the twonseperate wars. Being the primary supplier for both and the primary finisher of Both that it ultimately lost so few... half a million. Huge, but tiny, considering everything else.
We also don't have millions of civilian casualties like most of the other countries either.
True but suffering 400,000 military deaths over 3 and a half years of combat is by no means small and would be considered high in any other conflict outside of a world war. The same can be said of the UK. Our death toll looks small in comparison to some other countries but when you think 1 in 90 Brits were killed it puts it into perspective.

The OP for the video has Japanese caused Philippine deaths at 250K in 1940. That is a mistake, as they weren’t at war with Japan until December of 1941, when Japan attacked the USA and all her Pacific colonies.

It's not super surprising that the 2 countries with the 2 largest population and the most inept leadership were at the top of this list. The is a perfect example of how focusing on ideology/politics instead of merit and results can have a major effect on loss of life. When you see your people as just more bodies to throw at the enemy and not citizens with rights, what's another quarter million. Or 5 million.
That's one way to look at it. China was not communist until after the war. The Russians were fighting for their existence. We owe them respect at least.

Between the total incompetence and pure malice of the leadership, there were more lives wasted for no reason than can be accurately counted. Um, most of China's casualties were civilians, not military. Japanese committed horrific atrocities everywhere they went, and China took the full brunt of it.
At least half of Soviet casualties was actually military, which was partly due to Stalins decision not to ready his troops for war as well as his decision to purge his military right before the German invasion. This resulted in entire armies being encircled by the Germans.
That said, both sides did see inporportionate casualties compared to their enemies, but that's due to differences in fire disparity. Both armies had well throughout plans other than to just "throw men at the problem". The "human wave" hypothesis has been debunked for decades.
@@taoliu3949 im not sure what you mean "debunked" it's a fact that the Chinese used "human wave". Attacks all the way into Korea. This was not only done because they had a massive population to draw from, but as a psychological weapon. Most of the soldiers in those waves were lucky of they were given a grande. Most had nothing and we're to " aquire" a weapon of the enemy. With this in mind it is no wonder the Chinese suffered the casualties they did. To be quite honest, I find this a weird thing to argue about. History and the statistics say all that needs to be said. It's not really an "opinion" kind of a thing.....

WWII NRA infantry (which BTW, is the predecessor of the ROCA in Taiwan) was highly regarded by the IJA, Masanobu Tsuji rates them as the best infantry second to the Japanese. Their deficiencies lie with their lack of heavy equipment including artillery, but their infantry were experienced fighters. Chinese troops had been fighting a series of civil wars for decades and had no shortage of veterans.
Likewise, the Korean War PVA also had no shortage of veterans and conducted night infiltration tactics to encircle UN forces. The US Army green book describes the PVA as "skilled enemy light infantry troops", "well-trained disciplined fire fighters," "particularly adept at night fighting", and "were masters of the art of camouflage."
Its crazy that people forget how many Chinese died foghting the Japanese.

Back then, China was Manchuria and had been at war and occupied by Japan since 1935. So it's not really a part of what we think of being WW II . WW II was really considered to include the European, Pacific and African theatres of war. The Pacific theater included Asian theatres where Japan was already occupying.
I would also like to see the countries with the most non-human losses in WWII, broken down by species.

I don't know where these numbers come from, but the Chinese numbers are inaccurate. Those aren't likely all WWII related, they are probably mixing in civilians killed by Mao seperate and apart from the War. The Japanese invaded and ruled Manchuria, but I highly doubt that 20+ million died from the Japanese invasion.
