  • RetroPie is a great gaming front end but the default installation has no Commodore 64! This leaves a BIG hole that needs to be fixed.
    In this video I'll show you how to install VICE, the best Commodore 64 emulator, as an optional package in RetroPie. Then we'll get some games and start playing so C64 classics.
    Don't forget to check out my project page at Bytes N Bits. You'll find all the links mentioned in the video and the keyboard map so you know what buttons to use.

    Cheers man, this looks to have got me sorted. Though I now realise I have .tap files so they seem to also emulate the load times.
    Off to grab some D64 ones

      Great! I think there is a turbo tape setting in the emultor if you don't want to simulate the load times.

      @@BytesNBits Oh nice one, will have to take a look. In the end grabbed some .crt builds that seems to be working but still have the .tap so will give that option a try too. Cheers man

    Hi I'm using recalbox box on an Arcade cabinet and I'm stuck on the 'press play on tape ' prompt as the games don't autolaunch (or it seems they haven't been set to by the company that I bought it off).
    I've tried the virtual keyboard that is on the and my physical keyboard that is plugged into the machine via USB but still no joy.
    What am I missing?

    • @BytesNBits
      @BytesNBits  Před 2 lety

      Can you get to the VICE menu? Once the emulator is running and you get the Press Play prompt press the F12 key (or one of the controller buttons might be set up as a hotkey). This should take you to the VICE menu screen. There should be a tape control setting in there.

      I think you can in the settings->input->bindings area. Have a look on CZcams. Someones bound to have made a tutorial.

      I'm looking into this at the moment to try to be able to boot to an emulator in a couple of seconds. It's looking like a very cut down Linux distro but still have to get my head around it.
      Booting from SSD helps a bit. I haven't tried NVMe.

    I'd like to be able to run the C64 rather than merely load & play games on it.
    Meaning typing in programs, loading from/saving to d64 images, etc. Is that possible in Retropie?

      @@Astra8676 Try starting a C64 game. The screen will go black and then a window will pop up before the emulator starts. Press a button on the controller when that appears or you might need to use a keyboard. This will take you into the system settings for the C64. Select the default emulator and choose vice-x64. This should get the games running in the C64 emulator. At the moment I think you're set to use the VIC20 emulator.

      @BytesNBits  Před 24 dny

      Pull up the Vice menu (sorry I forget which button it is - but you'll probably need a keyboard). Then load the second disk into the virtual drive, then return to the game.

      @BytesNBits yeah I can't remember either...
      In fact that's been a big issue with vice as I can't remember they key mappings from an IBM 101key to c64 keyboards.
      I did find esc was mapped to "~" not esc.
      (Perhaps because it's just to the left of "1")
      It's been about 3 years since I've played around with this and my memory isn't what it used to be.

      @@sweetsourpork111 Your SNES controller will be fine for the joystick functions but you'll probably need to plug in a keyboard to get the full function from the emulator. If the RPi is inside a case try using a bluetooth or wireless keyboard - there's hopefully a menu option to connect to a bluetooth device otherwise one with a wireless dongle or simply plug in a USB keyboard to get set up. I hope this helps.

I uploaded a rom to pi called c-pet.vsf its basically a commodore pet rom but when I launched my pi and then installed the rom onto it it launched commodore 64 basic v2 instead of commodore pet v4. How can I fix this? I used vice and do i need to use lr-vice? And when I turn my pi on I see commodore 64 then i click on it and there is the rom but it launches the commodore 64 basic 2v. Make sure you do a system update. If you're getting an error loading the pre compiled binary try the build from source option. It will take some time to run but will build a fresh copy for you. I hope this works.

    How can i boot into c64 basic?

    • @BytesNBits
      @BytesNBits  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi. RetroPie is designed to run your games programs when you open up an emulator. Most games don't allow you to exit without resetting the machine. If you do that RetroArch will simply restart the game. Your best bet is to install a stand alone Vice emulator. I made a video on this for a while back - czcams.com/video/7Tswsf4jiz0/video.html. I hope this helps.

    • @BytesNBits
      @BytesNBits  Před 2 lety +1

      Actually - just had a thought. If you press the Run/Stop key (esc) as soon as the loading screen pops up you can break out of the disk loading sequence. This should drop you into basic. I had a quick play and it seems to sort of work!!
