There is more to painting a skoolie roof than you think... honestly

  • How hard can painting a roof be? Pretty hard when that roof also needs to be watertight, repairable, and hopefully look halfway decent, too.
    In this video I explain my preferred method for painting the roof of a Skoolie, Bus, Airstream, or any other metal-roofed RV.
    Dicor Roof Primer: a.co/d/7eGdMvx
    Dicor Roof Paint: a.co/d/1a0EuZn
    Dicor Lap Sealant: a.co/d/hZnlk7v
    DIcor Coating Ready Tape: a.co/d/1a0EuZn

    Charlie, that bus is truly a thing of beauty. It is your grand thesis of everything you've learned on this journey. I love it. And I'm jealous of that roof! (I wish we both had known better five years ago when I Tropicooled mine ... you're right, it gets dirty.) I'm also thinking about contacting Wes to paint my bus. Hell, I was following Transcend Existence before I even met you. When I realized he was painting your bus, I thought COOL! Anyway ... your bus is looking awesome!

    Dicor is great! I'm doing a bus build now so it's less of an issues but on my last RV I even ran a V at the rear with the lap sealant just to channel some of the water away from the rear fiberglass back cap. But like you I always tend to have 3 layers of protection, I build everything to last 50 years when me and the bus will likely be gone in 30 / :

    Those ribs on the exterior of the bus roof are an older Thomas design. It's on my 2004 flat front but not the 2004 FS65 my friend has. The twin to the 2004 flat front which is 2005 has a smooth roof, fun fact 2004 has exterior riveted walls and 2005+ Thomas are all Philips screw exterior.

    FYI, I just used the Dicor Sealant "self Leveling" I think a lot of people think it will level more then it does, so don't use extra or you will have a bump/line that I will be placing the tape over, I rolled my dicor self level to flat. Also, once you put the tape on, it says to prime and coat right away...... Good luck

    Thanks for the video Chuck. I am preparing to paint my bus roof and have been agonizing over which type of paint, and which product, to use. I appreciate your insights and experience. I had a question about dealing with holes that have not yet been drilled. I will be installing a deck, hopefully bolted into the vertical surfaces, and solar panels. Would you recommend placing something like Eternabond tape over the holes before passing the bolts through? That it would function kind of like a washer. Thanks!

  • @Dealyo1

    Gotta just throw it out there that this is not the recommended order of applying these various Dicor products. Based on Dicor’s recommendation application goes: lap sealant, cover tape, primer, coating. Their lap sealant needs between one to two weeks to cure fully before anything goes on top of it. Might not be as important for CC because it sounds like his rig is free of leaks to begin with but if you want to go by the book Dicor recommends the above order of operations

    Great stuff Chuck. Appreciate you sharing the knowledge. One question if you have the time: bought mine as a partial conversion and the prior owner tropicooled the whole thing straight out of the gate, i.e. he went over the stock emergency exits, EVERYTHING. I have most everything that’s on your bus roof yet to be installed on mine. When the time comes do you have any advice on how best to mount given that preexisting tropicool? Would love to not have to remove the entire thing smh.
    One thought was to wire wheel or sand it back to bare metal just in the areas of install but I’d be worried that where the new paint meets the silicone that there’d be a weak point. Does eternabond bond to the tropicool? Maybe that could cover the seam. I know you mentioned that Henry has their own sealant so I’ll look in to that. I’ve been using sika 221 everywhere else.
    Thanks for your time and content! The bus is looking like a freakin masterpiece. Can’t wait to see more

    Chuck, another great video! Question though: did you put sealant down when you were installing the solar entry gland, the roof fan, and the solar rack feet? I think they answer is "yes", you used butyl rubber, but it's a bit hard to tell from your commentary.
    I'm following along on your videos as I do a similar project with a cargo trailer. Boy do I wish I had the curved roof of a school bus to shed water better. My trailer is a flat roof, and I'm worried it's going to be a nightmare with pooled water.

    Man, your timing is impecable. A few days ahead of everything I have done. It’s been wonderful. But here’s a question, why are you able to paint over the di or sealant?? The instructions say to do that, but won’t the paint prevent it from curing??

      when & how well is it holding up?

    • @1982MCI
      @1982MCI Před rokem +1

      @@alanhat5252 it will hold up well if the surface was prepped correctly and with him painting it white will give home a good reflective surface to repel the UV rays that could otherwise penetrate the roof and heat the interior but it will not give it the sealing properties against the rain that the Dicor or other similar sealants can or will. It depends upon how thick it was applied also, but it’s still has the potential of not dealing around all of the rivets as the Dicor will, but it will help and as long as it’s applied correctly, will last a long time. I’m going to be applying the Dicor to my roof as well for these specific reasons and I do have extensive experience with both.
      Good luck on whatever you choose though. Just do your research on both so you can make an educated decision on what is best for your situation.

      I have a 1993 charter bus I am converting with my husband. We finished the demo, subfloor, and reskin. Before moving forward we plan to seal the roof and paint/seal the rest of bus. Then begin putting in the new exterior lights, windows and so on. The tape is an attractive way to add another level of sealing power.

On the spray, foam video, you spray foamed the window on the door and on the sides of the door. On this video, I noticed that the back windows and door and windows on the door appear to be painted. It's elastic enough to cope with the metal expanding & contracting with heat. This particularly shows up along joints & around rivets/fasteners.

    • @1982MCI
      @1982MCI Před rokem

      Because Dicor is an actual flexible sealant that will not crack and is designed to prevent water intrusion and paint is a hard protectant for the metal to prevent corrosion only. Two very different products that do completely different functions

      I had the same question. Mainly wondering why this is not done on normal cars if it’s that important?

    • @1982MCI
      @1982MCI Před rokem +4

      @@nicholasphillips5406 because normal cars are not full of hundreds of holes in their roofs like buses are with rivets stuck through them which offers a negative amount of protection against water intrusion and you are solely relying upon the coating applied to the surface to keep water out and after several years paint on roofs exposed to constant UV rays fades and cracks, especially around rivets and Walla, a leak is born! The other important difference is the fact that most of us are living in buses and not our cars so this isn’t really necessary to help reflect heat away from the the roof which then acts as a radiant heater that the car a/c is designed to overpower and keep the interior at a comfortable temp while your traveling. A bus roof is an enormous area that turns into a huge radiant heater and needs all the help we can give the A/C units to maintain a comfortable environment inside
