Cycling the New Brooklyn Bridge Bike Lane (September 2021)

  • čas pƙidĂĄn 15. 09. 2021
  • I ride my bicycle across the Brooklyn Bridge using the new bike lane. The two way bike lane opened in September 2021 and alleviates many of the problems with the original bike lane on the promenade. This new bike path replaces one of the Manhattan bound car lanes. It is narrow, but much better than the original bike lane.

    The number of bikes and the urgency of the biking made it impossible to continue to allow them on the pedestrian walkway. Bikes never belonged on the walkway really. Back when I was younger and very few people were on the bridge, it wasn't quite as bad. As ugly as this new path is, it's better than all other alternatives.

      I love the new path if I lived there and was trying to get somewhere thats what I would want. If I wanna chill with people or take in view I can walk. Someday. Side note the bike path still has an amazing view and so much to look at with the underside of the bridge and all. New Yorkers spoiled.

  • @christianricana7761
    @christianricana7761 Pƙed 2 lety +4

    Actually, the bike lane is where trolleys operate Manhattan-bound. When the Brooklyn Bridge opened, it wasn't a six-lane bridge. From 1883 to 1950, it was different. The trolley tracks were separated with x-like girders with I-beams on the top (like what it is today), while each traffic lane is open, nothing covering them. The middle lane is where streetcars operate, yet pedestrian traffic used it as a secondary lane. The outermost lane is mainly for pedestrian traffic.
    There were trolley stations on where the approaches located today. Due to the popularity of the subway, trolleys and streetcars started to decline. In 1950, the bridge was converted into a six-lane bridge. Trolley stations were demolished. The old New York World Building had to be demolished as well to make way for the new Manhattan entrance.
    Anyway, the bike lane is a good idea. Not perfect but too narrow.

    They should put up signage near the blind corners, or those wide angle mirrors that allow you to see around the bends. Overall, not bad. Truly separated and the chain link fence provides good protection.
    The surface is much improved over the previous bike lane, and it’s more functional than before. You do lose the great view you had before. Reminds me of the Queensboro Bridge bike lane now.

 As a visitor I had no idea what the heck was going on because there were so many people that you couldn’t even see the lines. I felt sorry for the cyclists AND the pedestrians. We just wanted to enjoy the view while folks on bikes clearly had places to go. As a cyclist myself I would’ve been frustrated too so I’m glad they designated a space for us. Shouldn't there be another bike lane in the road heading the opposite direction on the bridge? They should make each bike lane one way and it will take care of the blind spot issue during overtaking right?

    • @14moti
      @14moti Pƙed 2 lety +1

      It is fine as it is now. There isn't enough bike traffic to warrant taking out another lane. Also the city wants to make getting into Manhattan more difficult. They don't want to make it harder to get out.

    • @darienmiller1032
      @darienmiller1032 Pƙed 2 lety +1

      @@14moti You create more bike traffic by creating more bike infrastructure, that's generally how induced demand works. The large spike in cyclists NYC had during covid wouldn't have stayed if we chose not to build out more bike lanes for them. More car lanes results in more drivers, and similarly more bike lanes results in more bikers, so more cyclists who feel safe on the streets, and less drivers who feel it's necessary to drive is the end goal.

    • @TheCdubbleyoo
      @TheCdubbleyoo Pƙed rokem +1

      That's the way it is on other bridges. What you don't see is all of the various structures in place to get cars from various streets onto the bridge... A pretty old bridge that's already supporting more traffic thsn it was intended to.
      I am pretty sure there are on-ramps on the Manhattan side that prevent lanes on both sides. What most cyclists in NYC learn is to take the Manhattan Brg if going to downtown BKLN.
      The Williamsburg Bridge would appear to remain the only bike friendly bridge of the East River collection.

    It seems like, given the slow traffic on the bridge they could lower the speed limit for traffic, narrlow the lanes a bit and add some widgth to the bike lane. The start and finish could really do with some proper integration work aswell. I guess its the case of something is better than nothing though!

    The chain link fence atop the concrete barrier looks more of a hindrance than a help. The warning of a signal ahead towards the end is helpful but countdown markers intervals for the pedestrian crossing would be beneficial too.

    Blind corner? Oh you mean like on the beginning corner on the Manhattan side of the Manhattan Bridge? When it gets busy, just slow down right as you get to it. On the Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn to Manhattan, once you get over that middle hump, it's all downhill from there and right into the street. I feel very safe knowing that the jersey barrier with chain link fence is there to protect us. I don't consider it a blind corner, there's plenty of space. You know what's narrow? The infamous choke point near the end of the East River Park bike path.

    Making the centre line solid around the blind corners might help. It's not going to dissuade the most obstinately idiotic but removing the signal that "it's safe to overtake here" would probably be enough to stop at least a few head on collisions which ought to be worth a small amount of paint.

    I think 4 feet is plenty for a bike lane. As long as it's one way.
    Since some handlebars are close to two feet across, a four foot lane is a bit crowded for two way traffic. Six would be a lot better.

      The problem is that pedestrians wouldn’t stay out of the bike lane. I saw this all the time. Theoretically, if pedestrians stayed in the pedestrian lane, there would be no chance of getting hit. But, in all honesty, the space was just too narrow to keep the division, so this separate Ike lane makes much more sense.

    The former lane on the ped deck was terrible with all the tourist and bikes mixed up. And unsafe. So this is a big improvement. But the one thing is the class 2 ebikes are being used on full throttle and are really just junior scooters. So the bikes go too fast for bike lanes and can be dangerous. One other rant - too many bikes including the class 2 bombers are using the ped side of the Manhattan bridge. Use the bike side!
