How The Scrubs Spinoff Failed In A Single Strange Season

  • Scrubs will always be remembered as one of the best sitcoms of all time. The timeless cast and emotional storytelling created a truly unique half hour comedy. But the legacy of Scrubs took a major hit when ABC decided they wanted to extend the life of the show and try a soft reboot with Scrubs: Med School. Which after a near perfect Season 8 Finale, would ultimately be the shows downfall.

One little correction, Eliza Coupe's Dr. Mahoney wasn't a new character. She was introduced as a recurring character in Season 8 (and was the best of the interns introduced that season).
Imo, if they had wanted to carry on with Scrubs post-Braff, it should have been following the season 8 interns (Denise, Sunny, Howie, and Katie) with Coupe as the new main character. The most interesting thing about Season 9 was her.

Hell some of my favorite jokes are from S9. I also feel like you may have skipped over some emotional highlights from both Drew and Dr. Mahoney's Relationship and seeing how Cole and Lucy grew together in the season. Nothing groundbreaking but I will always love the episode where Drew and Mahoney finally stop screwing around and learn to trust each other.

Scrubs is, hands down, my favourite sitcom ever, and is the show I go back to whenever I need escapism or just generally cheering up. Season 9 was a terrible abandonment of the heart, originality and meaning that went into the first 8 seasons, and I've often wished I could erase what "Med School" gave us from my memories. Saying that, I think all it needed was a different main character (ideally Drew, as his character offered a completely different perspective and he was ultimately very likeable) and to slowly build the new cast up over their first season while gradually decreasing the screen time of the legacy characters. Lucy was painfully similar to JD and it instantly made her feel like a bad parody in a cast which actually had the potential to grow into its own lovable group.

Season 9's biggest flaw was actually Zach Braff. JD's story was so perfectly wrapped up that him being back and retreading the same ground, especially with Cox hurt the show.
The new characters were actually pretty funny and I really enjoyed the dynamic between Turk and Cox where they are now the two top guys in the hospital and have a begrudging respect and friendship. It alludes to some of the dynamic Cox developed with Kelso and Janitor and was looking to expand on that. Could have been a great place to keep the stories with the older cast fresh while playing a strong foundation for the new cast.
Denise was a wonderful bridge between the S8 newbies and S9 newbies and maybe one more person, like Howie would have helped. Could have been Cox and Turk running the place, Denise and Howie balancing the med students, and all the med student cast. There would have been alot to work with .

Scrubs is like the reverse “office” in a way because it was on tv all the time for a while, Comedy Central use to show like 3 or 4 episodes every afternoon in syndication around 2009-10, and then it just went away. It doesn’t get talked about much anymore or shown in reruns on tv.

They should of kept just Dr. Cox, said he transfered to be a teacher and started with the new med school group, with origional cast being used as one episode cameos only that were similiar to the cameos of celebs being used in the origional to drive deep narrative and learning for the new cast, like the episode with Dr. Cox and Ben dying

never saw this season but the tonal shift - the way the new actors look, talk, move, are made-up/dressed and lit - is SO HUGE. it looks like riverdale crashed into golden girls. there’s no way the original cast exists in this far more serious-looking, model glossy world. the lighting alone! it’s jarring.

Really wish they just made this a spin off instead of making it season 9 & having it forever attached directly to the legacy of a great show in Scrubs. The way season 8 ended with JD imagining how his life would turn out while The Book of Love played was so damn beautiful & well done. This sorry excuse for a continuation of the show following the S8 ending fudged what could have been an otherwise satisfying ending to a series.

I'm familiar with this discourse on S9, but let's be real. Even though maybe 'technically' it isn't a spinoff, it's a spinoff. We all know it's a spinoff and it doesn't take away from Scrubs, at all.
On top of that, I found it pretty entertaining on face value.

I liked Scrubs Med School because I was able to view it as a separate show. Everything Nerdstalgic says about it that would've made it better matches my thoughts about Scrubs for 10 plus years. They should've brought back Dr. Mahoney and Dr. Cox for the spin off, but everyone else from the original series should've been gone after the first two episodes.

  • @neatbug
    @neatbug Před 2 lety +1

I liked this season. I didn't view it as scrubs season 9, I viewed it as the first season of a new show. All first seasons of any shows usually kinda suck, so I viewed it knowing they were working out the kinks and building our relationships to the new characters. I honestly thought they could have made more seasons, continued to phase out the old characters while strengthening our relationships to the new ones and the show would have been fine. It was the formula that made scrubs a great show and the formula wasn't used up yet. Keeping the same formula with just the minor tweaks to modernize it was fine imo. Wish they would have kept pushing or at least given it another season to really see if the new story would have worked.

    - 1:52 The same thing happened to _Stargate: SG-1._ Season 8 ended just fine, it was a perfect series-finale that everybody would have been fine with; all the story-lines and loose-ends were tied up, all the characters accounted for. They had already made the spin off _Stargate Atlantis,_ which had just finished its first season and done well enough that it would be back for several more. Instead of starting a new spin-off for the new story about the Ori, they squeezed it into SG-1 which had just wrapped up 8 years of dealing with its own villain. Worse, much of the cast was different; in addition to the mainest main character of the show, Jack O'Neill being gone, a lot of the other characters were replaced with new ones as well. While those last two seasons were fine, and the new story and villain could easily have gone on for a few more, by the network insisting on making it be "Stargate SG-1" instead of something else, they kneecapped it and it was cancelled after a couple of seasons.
The same thing happens with movie franchises all the time, especially horror movies. There have been plenty of movies that were good in their own right and with a proper title (read their original title before being renamed by meddling studio executives), they could have done well. Instead, they are renamed to pretend they are part of some sort of franchise, so people find them disappointing. For example, _Hellraiser Inferno_ was actually a decent psychological thriller à la _Session 9_ or _Jacob's Ladder_ but it was a terrible Hellraiser movie. Likewise, _The Cellar_ was a good thriller, but they renamed it _10 Cloverfield Lane_ even though it had _zero_ connection to Cloverfield in the movie, thus making it an awful Cloverfield movie, _because it wasn't one._ 😒
    - 3:14 That's the problem with Hollywood, they keep recycling stuff on the specious assumption that just doing the same thing again will necessarily work. That's why reboots are absurd. Who are reboots for? They almost always piss off the fans who grew up with them, and kids who don't know any different have no connection to them to care about an existing property, so it may as well be a new property to them. Even saying they're banking on them succeeding because they already proved they work is nonsense because how many times have we heard people say "that would never work today" or "this could never be done now"? 🤨 Just because something was successful in the past, doesn't mean it will be now. In fact, almost nothing would, for any number of reasons, from society changing, to the mere fact that it's already been done, and thus redundant. 🤦
    - British shows tell a story over a few episodes over a couple of seasons then wrap it up and move onto something else. Hollywood is American, it's the epitome of capitalist greed, and thus is incapable of not milking things until the last penny has been squeezed out, when the last fan has turned and hates it. They don't make art, they make products to sell. 😒

Season 9 is still kinda funny. Upon a rewatch I came to the conclusion that isolated, it's decent, plenty funny, and the stories are still solid, but with the one issue that we ignore the development of the original cast (whom yes, should not have been there). The entire issue is just the overwhelming feeling of "why are we doing this?" Because like you said, it wrapped up perfectly.

Stories end. Stories _need_ to end. A core part of something being a story is that it ends.
Scrubs was written to end in season 8. Any attempt to make a season 9 that still picks the same old characters back up was going to fail - because those stories had already ended.
