  • Professor Doug Tallamy and his students demonstrated that caterpillars and the native plants with which the caterpillars co-evolved are the base of our food web. Our local butterflies are charismatic examples of insects with a caterpillar phase. We’ll discuss who our local butterflies are and how we can use their local native plants to enhance our gardens.
Susan Karasoff gardens in San Francisco’s clay soil. Susan is a member of the California Native Plant Society - Yerba Buena (San Francisco) chapter. She brings an an “only the easiest plants survive” approach to gardening. Susan grows a buffet of colorful native edible and pollinator plants, specifically gardening to feed caterpillars, bees, hummingbirds and people.

Wonderful presentation! I’m a northern Central Valley (Butte County) resident, so will need to adjust plantings accordingly. I’ve been able to keep my Narrow-leaved and Showy Milkweed, both grown from local seed collecting, alive and thriving pretty well all summer by sprinkling with drip watering. I appreciate all the resources you added towards the end! And your enthusiasm is contagious in any climate. Thanks so much!

Before buying butterfly/caterpillar/bee habitat plants at any nursery, ask what pesticides have been used on them. On milkweed, if you don’t see any aphids at all, be suspicious. I recently found out the hard way-watched two monarch caterpillars with classic pesticide poisoning symptoms within a couple of hours after they crawled onto a poisoned plant straight from the nursery.
