  • Not all of my Winter Arctic Vanlife adventures is action and Snow camping. This time I’m doing some upgrades to my self built ford transit Campervan . Although maybe not my best idea was doing it in -25c which just makes everything more difficult in the Nordics. Ive decided to have an admin few days after the considerable amount of miles and driving of recent, I’ve been doing over the last few weeks so I’ve been doing some light and Internet upgrades to the van.

    One thing every single youtuber who shows up in the Nordics has in common is they love our shops. Motonet, Biltema, Puuilo, Jula often seem like just different brands of chinesium, but I've realized I can't find jack shit when abroad because the rest of Europe doesn't seem to have these DIY-stores.

    I am looking forward to see how good the 1000 Watt electric engine pre-heater works and how it compares to the diesel engine pre-heater. I guess the diesel pre-heater puts out a lot more Watts?
    The electric pre-heater will always start up, no matter how cold it gets. If you are pleased with the result, I will certainly look at installing an electric pre-heater in my Sprinter 4x4 camper.

    • @MispronouncedAdventures
      @MispronouncedAdventures  Před 3 měsíci

      Pretty much yes, my webasto is a 5kw unit, the electric one is 1kw. I would intend to use it as a backup ( or on hook up ) as if should always work. Being used for back up I probably wouldn’t use it to do a full preheat to 80° as that would take five times as long as usual, but I could definitely use it to get the engine above zero in a emergency.

    • @MispronouncedAdventures
      @MispronouncedAdventures  Před 3 měsíci

      But sure the concept of it would work, you would spend energy to preheat the engine but when the engines running the DCDC charger will put that back in again

    Can you do a video on the relationship between pre heater coolant temp and Oil temp. You seem to always say “let the oil come up to temp”. Is that the number on the bottom left of your gizmo? How long does it take to heat up? As in the above your coolant was 72C and dropped as you started the engine while i think the Oil temp was -19C! Do you start the engine with the coolant preheater still running and have them running in parallel? How long before you set off? So many Qs!

    • @MispronouncedAdventures
      @MispronouncedAdventures  Před 3 měsíci +3

      For me.
      Coolant temperature wise I usually wait until the preheater has gotten the coolant above 70° as then that allows the engine to start like it’s a summers day even when it’s far below zero. It’s not so much the coolant temperature itself, but the time taken to get the coolant that temperature will have warmed the block and everything is not as tight, and will have somewhat done a decent job at warming the oil directly on components in the block. Basically a lot less stress on the engine. Trying to crank at -30 with no preheat the starter motor can’t even spin the engine sometimes.
      Oil on the other hand, i’ll wait for that to warm up after the engine has started and running at idle just to make sure everything is getting properly lubricated and flowing through the system.
      I could drive off immediately without letting the oil warm up, but it’s just a lot less stress in the engine that way.
      As for the engine preheater I often leave it running as it will do its own thing and shut down once its above 80, and particularly cold days I have the engine heater running whilst driving to keep the engine even hotter so there’s additional heat for the cabin heaters.
      How long it takes depends on how cold it is sometimes it could be 20 minutes if it’s only -10 could be 40 minutes if it’s -35

    • @gregcope5565
      @gregcope5565 Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks. I had assumed you ran them in parallel to speed up the oil warming!

    • @MispronouncedAdventures
      @MispronouncedAdventures  Před 3 měsíci

      @gregcope5565 Engine preheater only heats the coolant so that’s only going to warming the block and any oil currently in the system, but the oil pump is going to be only on when the engines is running.
      I usually let the engine preheater shut off on its own accord when the engines up the temperature.

      @MispronouncedAdventures  Před 3 měsíci +1

      @johnpatterson5744 it’s not really a roof rack if I’m honest with you it’s 33.7mm diameter tubing from the scaffolding and handrail industry and associated aluminium clamps. Which I painted black. Probably less than 300 quid altogether.
