Have you found any heavy armor in act 1?
One of the advantages of heavy armor proficiency is that you can dump dex, but that is of course not possible, if you need to play 50 hours with medium armor first...
How much of an advantage heavy armor proficiency is for rangers strongly depends on when you find your first decent set

Pick Folk Hero or Outlander background and Bounty Hunter and Urban Tracker and you can select sleight of hand as one of your skills as Ranger while people without I think Bounty Hunter can't and you will have 8 skills with proficiency that way and proficiency with the disguise kits and thieves' tools and Thieves' Cant passive making you be the team Ranger and Rogue in one.

As the game gets closer to launch, you'll probably have to start segregating these videos into Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced level guides. There's a lot of information in DnD, and it might help people who are coming to the channel know where to start looking.

From playing around in the EA it seems that rogues really shine in regards to the action economy, even more than in tabletop 5E. Not only is mobility one of the most important aspects of combat (bonus action dash is huge) but there's a lot of items that grant quite strong bonus effects on dashing. A lightning charge thief build is absurdly strong in the EA and once multiclassing becomes an option it could easily become absurd.

So this is just me theory crafting that the stealth bonus damage on your opener will be more beneficial at 6 then waiting to get your two attacks and then going to get your bonus. 9/3 or maybe 8/4 is probably still the final build but the question is when do optimally Branch off. Also I think getting the rogue skillset earlier might open up more options in the game.

I'm a wizard for life, so that's what my character will be. However, I recently had a playthrough where I created another custom character alongside my wizard and that character was a ranger. And OH MY, was I happy with having one in my party! I specced him into archery and I'd take him over Astarion any day. The sheer precision and reliability of the class (especially once he gets double attack) plus the extra benefit of utility spells makes him a perfect low maintenance turret I can always rely on. On the other hand, rogues are great, but they're kind of forced into melee to make use of all their actions, which means you also end up with them getting wailed on by the baddies

Do not sleep on the Thief Rogue. I just finished an *essentially solo Early Access run using my Thief, and having 2 bonus actions makes for amazing stealth and dash opportunities. I could easily maneuver to enemy blind spots to sneak attack them and stealth back into the shadows. You don’t need a high amount of HP or heavy armor if you never get hit!
And if I did get into a tight spot, I could dash 3 times in a single round to gain distance and reset a fight. Even just having a second opportunity to stealth if the first attempt failed was huge!
Strongly considering a Thief for my Dark Urge play through just because of how solo capable it felt.
    * I say “essentially solo” above as the only companion I kept around for my EA run was Gale, and that’s just so I could park him in front of a vendor and instantly send loot to him to sell while my Thief kept murdering.

I want to go with the gloom stalker on my first play through which will probably last a year lol. But I’m pretty sure that’s the route. I will take as far as my kind of style is concerned, and this video helped with narrowing that down.
So a stealth ranger distance now style is what I’m going for. Not really planning on multi classing as instinctively, I don’t want to lose access to those Max high tier level cat skill capabilities however, rogue is obviously a strong candidate with stealth aspects so mixing the two seems like a very viable route to take.
In any case, at least this video helped to give me some clarity on those two areas as far as a Ranger and rogue is concerned
I’m also very interested in the sorcerer and warlock. Again my instinct is not to multi class because of fear of losing those higher tier capabilities at level cap. I've played Thief and both specs of Ranger in patch 9 and I can definitely say Ranger outshines the Rogue in damage (in EA at a minimum). What Rogues really need at lvl 5 is the extra attack (in addition to the bonus attack they get at lvl 3), not the current non half working damage reduction perk.
Also if you play Beast Master Ranger, it's like getting 3 main attacks at lvl 5 the dire raven was hitting enemies for around 20 dmg, the pet dmg scales by lvl. Add in the extra survivability of the Ranger, no tricks being required to do max damage, and being able to just sit safely at range, there's no purpose to the thief that any other melee class doesn't already do better. I would say 2H Oathbreaker Paladin slaps way harder that Thief does, all while having heavy armor, decent buffs/debuffs, and heals.

When they do a sneak attack, that bonus matched the weapon's damage type... so a strength based character can, yes, do sneak damage bonus with a maul, and their 20 strength, for example.
Yes, a strength based rogue is possible for some aspects of their usual role, so long as you can find ways of doing what stealth does... and gettiing them advantage.
