- How To Video to show how to hack The Original Radio Shack Model 12-587 "Ghost Box" based on the www.keyportpara... Hultay #5 Hack! Have Fun!
***DISCLAIMER** Please note that the NEW 12-587 has not yet been hacked! We have tried clipping the MU but it does not work like other hacks! If you go to purchase your radio and it is in a cardboard box with a picture of the radio on the front like in this video BUY IT! If it is in a clear plastic packaging and the actual radio is visible, this is the NEW radio and we do not recommend buying. ****
Thankyou StealtHealer i had bought a Radio Shack 12-587 from a seller on Ebay it was supposed to have been modified and i had no luck at all picking up anything paraNormal. I watched your demo on hacking the 12-587 and went over each step by step and sure enough the pin that should have been bent over was'nt so i redone it by snaping it off compleatly.
I notice i dont get hung up on regular FM AM radio stations anymore and i am hearing random words, i will be doing some EVP work this week :)
Will add, use of the Faraday Box listed in some other models does have a very positive effect on cleaning the audio or limiting radio excessive noise and bleedover from nearby stations.
very neat mod! So far no luck finding this model but I am still looking.
Considered it, however that would only leave the radio hack useful in saturated areas. No antenna at all would probably render the radio as a white noise generator or only allow it to pick up my close stations only. I had considered possibly altering the radio for a more variable signal input. I have another radio shack unit that is unhackable but gets horrid reception on its int. antenna, I considered just switching the antennas on one hack model for local use.
no, the new ribbons ones can not scan due to a different chip board. the new chip boards dont have a scan non-mute function programed into it.
wow its a small world, hey krista its megan(my husband is mike and he was friends with jim) distefano. i was looking up the same info and saw your response and recognized your name!! i just bought the newer version i guess of this radioshack 12-587 today also and still researching if there is a hack for it, if not im returning mine, but ill let you know if i come across anything! weird, lol
are you sure you bent down the correct pin,the top left one only? Also, you have to hold down the scan button for it to start scanning the frequencies, after it starts, hit the hold button on the right side of the radio. It should work.
Can't wait to try it later today!
@reek13ful The pin or wire is "MU" typically on the radios. Read down on the comments though, someone had tried this already. You might get together with that user and compare notes before damaging the radio?
@IrocZGuy87 have you tried putting it in a small cardboard housing completely covered in tinfoil but either leave small holes over the scan buttons so you have access to continuously hold in the scan or simply fit the new continous scan switch then drop it into this housing - personally where i stay in the uk i get very little radio station bleed through and i dont need to use this extra set up.
Thanks for showing us how to modifi. the box
which pin do I bend, your video is so blurry I cant see anything
Proving Demons well it was 2009

@@kenny_525 Erm... what now ?
Holy shit! proving demons was here!!??🔥🔥?Hell yeah!!🤘🏻
i have a couple of questions for you i'v heard that to use a ghost box it requires a little bit of training, what exactly does that mean? do i just keep listening to sessions uploaded on here as well other sessions on other sites?, the other question is more of a personal one aside from being a ghost hunter, i'm a bit of a fan of heavymetal music so who was that first band playing in the background? i know the second one was iron maiden and the song was aces high
@tgrfan42069 I'm sure you are partly correct that picking up bits of radio transmission happens, but I'm also sure the one ghost adventures uses is a bit different...for one I think it's more of a white noise generator, so it generates and scans the random frequencies within the white noise. And two, it scans at a faster rate than these radio hacks so when an intelligent response is heard it's not heard on one frequency, it's spread out over multiple frequencies.
I just bought a 12-587 and it was exactly like the video.
@edwardhuertas5 The ability to scan is the only thing needed. And yes, a home radio could work. Even old school non-digital can. However, in most cases people using the other radios will ask a question then manually scan the frequencies quickly for a possible intelligent response. Some radios while scanning will mute the audio feed, which will not work though. The basic principle behind the RS Hack is to remove the "mute" feature while scanning by modification only. Hope that helps clarify!
the latest sale of the model does not have the pins you are talking about to modify. anyway to modify the newest design?
@akeames sorry that question was actually meant for stealthealer, idk why it sent it to you, i must have hit reply by accident.
@stealthealer yea i saw another video on here whare someone made something that you can put the radio in using a cardbord box that has been wrapped in alluinum foil, and that he said doing that defliects about 90% percent of the airwaves coming in to it
Nothing is unhackable!
@acdc2426 Yes, I double checked it as well. For some reason, the hack works great, but I have seen not only my own, but two team members experience the same intermittent "stop" with no causation, even when using the hold feature.
What would happen if you bent two or three pins adjacent to the one you bent? can you try that?
Ok heres the thing I got that same model to day. Heres the thing it doesnt have the pins you show. With that said what do you do to hack it
Hello. Do you know how to make a radioshack radion model 12-587 (The newer type with a ribbon of wires instead of pegs) into a ghost box?
I have researched this a few times, and looked for an answer with some colleagues as well. None of us have cross referenced the hack on the new design. the ribbons do not match the 20-125 set up as well. As soon as I see an update, I will post it. Otherwise, I would recommend trying the 20-125 mod as well that I have posted. Radio Shack burned me as well on the 12-269 model which was my first attempt and I have not seen anyone to this day remedy the mod on the new 12-269 either.
@snickerpoohjed I agree with Mightydog67! I have been using the "faraday cage" alot in recent sessions. It does not work great with this model of radio as the scan does still occasionally stop and you have to be able to moniter, but works excellent with my 20-125 model as seen on another video!
@akeames Hey there I had a question ive been pondering. Ive been using your device exactly here that I made myself, works great! Thanks alot! However. Ive been watching a lot of Ghost adventures lately and ive noticed their spirit box gets no interference from radio stations no matter where they are located. Is it possible to have it scan all frequencies for am and also eliminate the broadcast voices coming through on actual stations?
@akeames Did you figure it out. I bought one and the ciruit board is different. Which ribbon gets cut?
Deffinetly gonna buy that and hack it for my trip to Bannock, Montana
@ipanda0attack. Yes, the radio loses no normal functionality, just plays while scanning.
the new ribbon typ says rock on one it is the therd in from left,i just might cut it and see
I bought one of the newer-versions of the 12-587 which does not have the pins but has the 10-wire ribbon that akeames mentioned above. I managed to untangle the two circuit boards enough that I could see the 'labels' for each wire. They are as follows:
ST_DET
SAT_IN (not sure as first letter is obscured by the glue)
CND
3V3
MUTE
R_POW
DIO
SCK
GND
AMP_P
I tried cutting the 'mute' wire after reading other comments, but no effect. Can anyone shed any light based on the above notes?
@jettajdre Okay, lets try this again. I prefer the Radio Shack 20 dash 125 model so far. I have done this model and the 125 as well as worked 3 Sony models, and I have to say I am partial to the 125 function and ability to use with faraday cage. the 587 has better audio/sound though, crisper imo. But has an occasion "stop" I can not get past?
did you find out anything on the newer model yet?
will you let me know how to hack this ribbon the new 587 doesnt have any pin just a 10 wire ribbon
Great!
still no solution to the 12-587 new model? i just got screwed today too, wish i had seen this before i bought it of course. has anyone figured out a way to at least clip the mute one? i dont even care if i still have to hold the button down, i just dont want it silent.
Kinda cool its an I2C? interface? Can does anyone have the datasheet on the tuner ic?
@tgrfan42069 You are not wrong, the theory is to use phonetic sounds to build a word or phrase that closely matches the question. We do expect "contamination" to a large degree, and while some consider it evidential, i consider it more entertaining, compelling and worth follow-up research to refine the line of research Thomas Edison embarked on. Laugh if you want. I do agree though, any response should be strongly filtered with common sense and integrity.
@IrocZGuy87
try disconnecting the antenna
@jeffrielly Alot of people/places will try to sell you training, but trying and doing is the best experience. For me,I just applied some of my traditional EVP session question/answers with the use of the ghost box. On the second set of questions,I feel bad as I can not find that I sourced the artist, but will check this out soon.My main computer I edited and have raw data on is down right now. Will see if I can find my back-up discs as well to answer quickly! I was a newbie video maker when...
@akeames No, actually, I had not hacked one of these boxes in some time. However, thanks for the heads up! The cable you describe sounds similar to the 20-125 model hack in one of my other videos. If you are brave, you can see if they copied the chipset from that model to the new 12-587 and see if it works, but yes, might be out $30. Radio Shack has a tendency to this this, and in fact burned me on another model- after I purchased 3 of them. If you succesfully hack it, update us please!
@tbenefi33 My preference has always been AM. FM gets too much music in my region.
I did it! Thank you for the instructions.
great video, but the music sucks and way too loud
When’ you put it back together I’m sure I hear Vrill!
thats radio shack for you, i bet none of the ribbon wires will make it work on the newer models, ill try cutting each one and try all of them seperate, i bet its elswhere on the chip boards now
this guys area must be haunted i hear voices on it lmao.
Hi, Have you found a way to make the new 12-587 with the ribbon work? Very curious to know. Thanks
Can you do a video on how hack the new 12587 with the black ribbon?
youtube - a very first ghost box encounter live ep's very clear
my youtube channel i can no longer access, this shows my ghost box sessions
That works great, thanks alot for the video!!!
I just emailed you.
That's awesome I connect a 3way switch so you can make the radio go to regular function and don't have to hold the button. But that is very cool, even easier then my way. Good job brother, and thanks for the info. May God protect you and your team, in the name of Jesus Christ our lord, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever, Amen. Peace to you Mjr. Tom S. Colorado USA.
Good vid!
Question, haven't been able to find an answer but is there some sort of marking on the back panel that would tell me if it is the older model with the pins or the newer with the ribbon wire? I know the newer model can also be hacked but I wanted to get an older model because it's easier...
The old style typically came new in a cardboard box with the new models in plastic bubble packaging. The only other known difference is the model number. The older models were 20-125 with the newer having a 20125 removing the dash. I cannot recall if the missing dash was on both the radio or the packaging. I no longer have my newer model hack I attempted to compare and many may not have the packaging with them anymore. I got lucky way back and walked into an RS store who had just clearanced the old out and I bought all he had and by the time I hit the other stores & very few to be found. I did not care for the hack of the updated version. The 20-157 models also did similar updates on packaging and model number. 20-157 was my favorite box for response but it did not withstand test of time well. The 20-125s had better audio & held up better over years of testing and use and I down to one working model. I sold most of the hacked models years ago keeping two 125s for myself but one got damaged in water. I treat the last one with kid gloves now. Best of luck on finding one these days!!
@stealthealer i appreciate the response, I ordered one of these but it was the newer model and I didn't care for the new hack either so I'm trying to narrow down how to get an older model
Aren't you just supposed to leave it on a station that's not being used? If you're just letting it scan stations then most likely whatever you hear is just whatever they're saying on those different stations.
DJ CLEANCAT you have to sweep scan
Was this the first ghost or spirit box?
No it is not. It is however, the first hack I did.
You should update this
Not sure what you mean by update? If referring to the superseded model design, I did attempt it but just bricked a radio instead. Do not recommend on the 12587 new design. When buying a radio, be sure to look for the old packaging with the 12-587 model (with dash)
@@stealthealerThank you. The wire strip seems impossible
i cant find the pin where u bend where is it?
You might have the modern-revamped-version....there are videos for the newer version on youtube....It involves wiring up a 3-way switch....Bit more trickier....
Time to break out bus pirate.....I think mutting is part of the firmware now....
The new one is 1200587 for sure not the same radio.
Do you know of any resources I could use to learn more about hacking other radios? I found about 20- 1970ish to 1990ish radios in my dads barn and want to try hacking but don't want to ruin them.. the one I have open now, has capacitors, semiconductors, and the same black box you just altered in your radio... So I was thinking if I found the same pin on this one maybe I can hack it too? Let me know!🤗
SiSsY Kill-burn It’s really about the sweep function. older dial radios can do same with manual sweep but subject to more human error. The PSB-7 ghost box price point is down, many current radio manufacturers including RS updated their boards digitally to make hack nearly impossible, almost pays to buy one now. These models when they came out were $39-49 retail and PSBs start at $69 ready to go out of box. I’d often find clearance models but even the used resell market identifying these models are asking over PSB7 price.
Google shack hack and you’ll find other model info.
@@stealthealer Thanks for the insight. I HAVE a PSB7.. I'm just not too impressed even after a year testing.. sure it works well, but I've heard people have better responses with ones hacked themselves.. either way, I'll keep checking :-)
The one I am currently working on does have auto sweep but the sweep is muted so I'm sorting that out. The others are manual so if I wanted to use those I would have to add to it which would as you point out be more work or left alone, prone to error..
Eh.. guess I SHOULD have taken intro to electronics in college when it was offered.. damn prelaw major didn't leave much open though lol
SiSsY Kill-burn I know your struggle. I prefer the adjustable speed of a sweep so I hold onto my Shack Hacks like gold. One if my units has broken LCD but seems to get best results overall. However have had good luck with PSB7 as well. Any box that will cuss at me through the US FCA restrictions gets my vote 😂
why you move so much.you can`t even see the inside.
@jettajdre will not let me respond to you?
i just bought the model is diff too im also pissed every body save your 30 bucks an dont buy this the pins are not there they have changed it
lmao you are bound to catch some EVPs with that radio.people who believe this stuff works needs help.i mean really walking around with a radio and wondering where you are picking up the voices from lmao..ghost adventures use this alot and pick up DJ's and commercials and swear its a ghost talking.
I have this scanning hacked radio but in the middle of scanning it will stop scanning. Is there away to stop it from stopping scanning?
MetallicaFan1980 Sandman This is a known issue on this model. My hack rarely did this but I just kept an eye on the LCD when doing a session. I actually wore this box out and can’t recall if I ever found the solution to it as I moved onto the 20-125 model which did not have the issue. Honestly I preferred the scan rate and results of this hack more than the others which is why it stayed in use. I just kept an eye on it. Hard to find the older original models! Glad to see someone got their hands on one!!
Michael Joseph ebay still sells em for $150.00
MetallicaFan1980 Sandman Yea, I’ve seen them. I paid $22-29 for my hacks back when so paying $150 prices doesn’t appeal. The PSB-7 is an okay box for less than half that ready to go out of the box.
MetallicaFan1980 Sandman If you want to compare the 587 model to others, the PSB-7 is in this video czcams.com/video/1dpLP3ftUX8/video.html and if you look at my page for MSP (Missouri State Pen) *uncensored* guest video you’ll hear my Radio Shack 12-120 in action.
Michael Joseph got a link to the page? Couldn’t find it.
I just posted a video on my mod...
@TheDJBUzzDOG Just did, not helping at all :(
DIY Radio Shack Hack Model 12-587 "Ghost Box"
Do a little advance hacking.
Where do i buy 1 of these
WIGAN MIKE this model has been appended & discontinued. Be sure to find the original model in the box, not the plastic packaging. Also if memory serves the original pn on box was 12-169 but on the plastic packaging I think it was amended to 121690.
You'll need to search used or old stock markets. eBay, when found often want a premium for them.
Michael Joseph thanks
SOme real hacking is needed....
T'arrête pas de bouger,tu vas trop vite du coup on voit rien!!😤
:O i made mes a ghost box :D
Pff,on voit absolument rien et ça bouge sans arrêt !
If someone is selling one or knows where to find a radio shack 12-587, i'd really appreciate it.
+Lewis Sanders Nice one, Lewis! I bought a broken one off ebay lol i bought it knowing it was broke but i'm trying to fix it but with no luck... i would definitely buy one off you if you're selling one! :)
+DrunkenDonkeyCircus I live in UK as well so I guess it's even more hard for me to get my hands on one.
+Lewis Sanders do you ship to belgium? because can't find any here :(
***** awesome! but how do i pay? because we use € ( euro ) and you probably use $ ( dollars ) ?
search engine u u k fuck z
I just love it. RANDOM radio noise is ghosts talking. How stupid people have become! LOL
5:29 you're funny?
