Inside Dragrace's Second Generation

- We are now closer to season 20 of Rupauls Dragrace, than we are to when season 10 first came out. This generation of main seasons has been quite the ride to follow, so I thought that with season 16 coming to end, it'd be cool to look back the era from s10-s16, the changes that its caused within the fanbase, and the decisions made by production with format twists.

The double digit seasons for an OG like me, are hard to watch because the queens were raised on Drag Race, not necessarily raised in the bar scene. Queens who are sponsored, outfits made, catchphrases practiced, merch ready…but cant walk in heels, cant lip synch, not genuinely funny or interesting, cant do their own make up. Take away their team and instagram filters and they fall apart.
OOOOU clock it girl. I like all seasons mostly but honestly everything you said made so much sense imo
Interesting take!
Name the names mama
@@12Tecpatl too many to remember but i will give a positive, my favorite from and winner season 10: Aquaria. She legit was raised on and studied seasons 1-9, and her first chance to be on the show at 18 (…21 cause they drink?), she delivered exactly what the judges and producers wanted. Looks, she won snatch game (3rd winner to also win the crown)! Never in the bottom two…i don’t remember, and was the only one in the chaotic final lip synch who didnt look desperate or kill butterflies
@@12Tecpatl queens who were just surface pretty. That was it, cute princess-sy names, lips done , cheeks done, cant sew, all their outfits completely done so they cant give the judges what they asked for unless another queen is miss congeniality…and helps them only for it to bite them in the as- and lands them ‘safe’ for helping (ever notice that, ru doesnt praise helpers) , and lastly they rely heavily on body, cause they spent more on it than their talent
Nina Bo'nina Brown should've been Blac Chyna
Thank you, lol.
As an og fan of the show that started watching with season 1 on my ipod touch at 14 years old, Season 16 has been the most enjoyable season to watch in a LONG time. The cast, the pacing, no annoying gimmick, no non-elim episodes back to back, a proper storyline and a "villain" all has made it so good.
EXACTLYY
this is just 100% wrong 😂 this season is amazing but you must have amnesia is all
Agree 100% i would say since S12 this one is the best and imo better than S12
The cast? Is a snoozefest. No storylines, literally 0. The villain is boring and tries too hard to be the villain. The annoying gimmick this season was Nymphias obsession with yellow.
15 sucked this was bettee
6:55 The shade on Trixie is just...

I totally missed it. I had to go back and check 😂
I saw it and immediately searched for this comment! 😂😂😂 had to make sure I wasn’t crazy
Mama this isn't garbage
😍
It's crazy to see people voicing opinions on how s16 is not good or is boring. That's just crazy to me. S16 is the first season since 12 that was not boring and terrible (s13 &14) or where we didn't know who was going to win since episode 1 (s15). In this current season we've arrived at a top 3 who all have a very credible argument to win the crown. That is finally bringing some exictement back into the drag race!
I agree 100% I love this season.
I think most agree with the point you make.
The big issue is that these queens are super self-producing more than other years. That’s the whole reason no one watches untucked because they aren’t being genuine like they are in their confessionals/social media. There’s just no real drama/story lines happening inside of the work room besides PJ being hostile towards Amanda.
@@Kai-chow Self producing is another storyline/aspect imo. Ru put Plane in the bottom for not showing vulnerability and throughout this season the queens have been super blunt and honest abt their feelings imo. Idk what more ppl can expect
@@Kai-chow well baby that's not cast' fault, Q being true to her feeling and look what fanbase did to her. You can't expect queens to be not too self-produced when y'all can't handle someone like Q or even Dawn
mama, I just wanted to say Kudos for saying that... for spiilling...
Thank you Plane Jane for letting herself to be attacked by the crazy fanbase so we are able to get this very entertaining season… and also she was being nice to other queens by letting them borrow her stuff during challenges but still want to keep her villain persona, kudos mama ❤️
mama kudos for.. for say that..for spilling. like seriously
I'm sorry but Plane Jane got my heart since the beginning. She makes this season so entertaining while serving strongs performances. Love her so much and it's time for a villain to snatched that crown yall
FRRR I’m mostly team nymphia but I’d LOVE to see a villain like Plane snatch the crown
She got your heart despite the straight up malicious mistreatment of another contestant from the outset. I guess do you
@@morgenmuffel5747go touch grass
Honestly, at this point, a villain is probably the only "type" of queen left for Ru not to crown in the US competition... except for a big girl (Bob doesn't really count; most people know her as a comedy queen first, a political queen, then oh right she's tall)
@@TheGrifhinx I'd say that Tyra in Season 2 was a villain that won, but it would be really interesting to see Plane win since it isn't something common for the villain to win
The brick was killed at stonewall.
It's pretty crazy that season 14 lost the Emmy to Lizzos Big Girl show... I mean idc how bad s14 was, nothing is worse than Lizzo's reality show about looking for dancers that r just gonna sue her after the tour
💀
drag her lmaooo
your fatphobia’s showing
What a disgusting comment. The show isn’t about lizzo, it’s more than just about her, it’s the message of body image that a lot of queer ppl deal with. If u think that winning an Emmy is “crazy” then maybe ur crazy mama!
The Emmy is just a popular award, they don’t care about quality. RPDR is entertaining but a shitty show. The production is shit, their scripts are shit, their jokes are shit. But I would never say that.
It’d be such a gag if Plane Jane won lmao
It'd be a refreshing change. It's been a whiiile since we've had a "villain" winner. 😏
While I’m rooting for Nymphia, you’re right it would be such a gag
I feel she’s the obvious choice
mama, kudos for exploring that, for the deep dive.
I love season 16. I'm so torn between who I want to win right now. I think I'm leaning towards Sapphira. She's that motherly, professional presence that makes you feel so comfortable watching her. Plus, those runways are next level. She's truly royalty. But, I also adore Nymphia. She's got that relatability factor, especially that crippling fear that you're not going to succeed only for it all to be okay in the end. She encapsulates the more modern sense of humor, and all of her looks are very artistic and thoughtful. Also, the fact that she made a lot of her looks is insane. I think whoever they choose for the win is sending a clear message about their brand.
If Sapphira wins, they're going down the classic route of the best and most consistent in the competition wins. She only had one stumble, but it still didn't even make her look bad. She's drag perfection and is here to educate the children.
If Nymphia wins, it's showing that they're dedicated to the new generation. The younger, fresher queens are here to stay, and the opinions of the fans are loud and clear. Making an impression, starting strong and ending strong, is paramount. Plus, it'd be really nice to see another Asian winner.
If Plane wins, it's about the entertainment and drama. Yes, Plane did an amazing job in the challenges, but what really sets her apart from the other two is her ability to catch the camera no matter where she is. She played an extremely smart game, going in and catering directly to Ru while establishing herself as the villain, then taking the audience on a journey to show that she's not a bad person, she's got a great sense of humor and has that "wink wink nudge nudge, hey I know I'm on TV" type of attitude. Even if she doesn't win the crown, she's won the season by being the person nobody can stop talking about.
I think we can all agree that the two who don't win are top of the list for All Stars and are going to be perfectly fine in their careers
Nice comment mama ❤️ someting to tink about 👍
I think Nymphia or Sapphira should take the crown. They both add really unique drag perspectives that I think we haven't seen with any of the previous winners.
Plane too, but honestly I hope the one who does the best in the finale wins, I just don’t enjoy a ceremony to crown the best track record, I prefer that the competition continues until the last minute
I think Nymphia should be crowned since she would be the second asian queen to be crowned on the US season after raja
Im from the future , i got bad news about plane....@@crisbermudez
@@goriantheboi8044 I really don’t care and didn’t asked, I don’t like spoilers and some of them are not true but y’all keep believing in them, I’m just saying that the top 3 is strong enough to win and all of them have a unique perspective, but that I hope the one who does the best in the finale wins, I usually don’t have a favorite queen, because I think if you make it to the finale you are worthy of winning
@crisbermudez not reading allat just letting u know 🥰😍
I joined in early 2021 and watched 7-13, then all stars 4-6, then went back and watched seasons 1-6 before watching AS 1-3. I don’t understand the newer fans who haven’t watched the golden era which is absolutely the peak of drag race.
as a fan since season 9, who has watched every season at least twice, s16 reminded me of the gold era of drag race! it has been so good and my excitement reached new peaks every week it aired!!
What are the parallels of s16 and the golden era of drag race ?
I started watching as S8 was airing. I was told by a friend watch season 7, did that, then watched S8, and binged the rest of the show. My fav double digit seasons are S14, S12 and S16 really feels like the best one in years. This season is incredible ❤
Finally a s14 appreciator !!! The cast and the vibe was so incredible idc for the weird pace and twists
Exactly why nobody understood -well, almost- understood season 14 it was amazing, good vibes, not a clear winner
love to see fellow s14 appreciators 💖 the vibes were immaculate and the cast was so lovable idc about the twist or pacing and tbh not enough people talk about s14’s chaotic neutral rupaul 😂 I loved it
I just like how this season is the first in quite awhile where you don't see how much it is being "produced" or rigged into some peoples favour like we really really started seeing or noticing in the season 10 and onward
The only part i questioned a bit was the episode where no one went home after Plane wasted her immunity but other than that i agree 100%
It's also helped that the performance of the queens has aligned with the obvious production arc. There have been a few episodes where I've said "if X does badly then it will make it really easy for Ru/Production to send them home" because X was the obvious queen to cut at that point. And then X has done badly and gone home.
Did u watch the show Tamar? The season got heavily produced the second plane used the potion on nymphia and onwards
Kudos for spilling sisterrr. I would argue that 2nd gen drag race started with S9 (lady gaga, lsftc, maskgate, rose petals, best friends race, etc), but overall I agree with most points spilled. I just hope drag race wont end up like antm where it lost steam even after introducing wackier twists
Mother Jane has to win just for the "Don't break my heart, just break my back" phrase, kuddos to her.
This season is definitely so entertaining and good and all the Queen's have been memorable and likeable I'd love to see Sapphira take the crown but all three are amazing and deserving
I liked the chocolate and the Porkchop Lounge. I also like Down Under. I think RuPaul is very free there. It’s sad they don’t have a bigger budget and that RuPaul will not host it anymore. It would be so good if RuPaul could go to every international franchise for the final episode.
Been here since season ONE and I can confidently say that season 16 is the best we've seen in a while
I’m a newer fan that got into the show in 2022 but I love the older seasons more bc I just love how unfiltered the queens were with their thoughts and emotions. There was sm drama happening with very iconic moments which made an entertaining watch. While the new seasons barely have any drama but S16 has had some great drama and some very shady queens which made it really entertaining. The top 3 honestly any one of them could win the crown and I wouldn’t complain but I think Nymphia will be winning.
Kit connor popped up as audience always got me
Is that a joke or a reference I'm missing?
I was watching season 16 with my friends who aren’t really fans and my sister who didn’t like drag race at the time, after the first episode she was hooked
16:29 “cwiticism” 😂 I died a little

Subtle and smooth Green Gay
Started watched at Season 8, I feel like it was the PERFECT era to join the fandom. I couldn’t comprehend starting now! ❤
"But they still have an online voice within the online discussion of the episodes that happen online" killed me ❤
Mistress was definitely not over looked at all
The "single digit" queens boast about their season but imo most of them have become irrelevant with exception of a select few. There's so much drag nowadays that most queens do become forgettable fast. The "double digit" seasons are just as good, the perspective may be a little different but I really see no difference in quality or entertainment. Drag like most things changes with the time and I really don't mind.
im still mad about how deja and jorgeous went out
I’m so thankful I found the show when I did back when season 2 and 3 were on US Netflix. Season 5 was the first season I watched while it was airing, and it was so easy to go back and watch season 1 and 4. I have been a fan since about 2012, and I am so happy to see more fans finding the show! I know it is a lot to catch up on, especially with all the international franchises (I do not even keep up with them all as a super fan!) and I am thankful for channels like yours that give new fans a history lesson on the older seasons!
I remember stumbling upon Season 7 when the finale of the season aired and I was so intrigued by the queens and their artistry that throughout 2015 I watched the og seasons and became a fan 🪭.
Honestly, Drag Race Espana is my favourite series of the franchise)
I feel like season 16 kind of reassured us for that question we have since season 10-11,
“Are Rupaul’s drag race slowly dying?”
We have seen so many long running reality tv shows died, like ANTM, project runway, top chef, X factor, the voice, these series where they initially garnered so much following and viewership, but dwindled down to something that was a shell of its former self.
Drag race does have a tendency of going that way in the early 2020s, but season 15 and 16 sort of reinvigorated the show and let us know that drag race is not going down that path any time soon
Great Video! I'm a new comer to Drag Race (I've only been watching for 2 years), but I've seen every season and I love your commentary on the history and evolution of it. Thank you!
I remember *illegally streaming the first season on my PC and thinking that the season 1 filter was in fact my computer acting up or the download being a bit dodgy.
One aspect I think you missed was that the second generation was the first time the series became a lot more trans-friendly. With the rewording the the intro catchphrase, removing trans slurs and allowing out trans queens to compete. I think this led to a new audience of trans folk who, for the first time, didn't have to cringe when watching it. That said, I also love the single-digit seasons! I don't mind a bit of cringe. But seasons 13-15 were VERY refreshing in terms of the queens. Yes, the chocolate bar sucked.
(A trans perspective..)
Ive seen every season since season 2 in real time! But i would love to see a video series explaining every self reference per season! 🙏🏾😍
I've followed the show from ep 1 S 1 - I still do and love it. Even if not every season is great... I enjoy the content you make a lot and I think it is good there is some mystery of what happened really behind the scenes and what production decided... I think it is more fun that way. Why ask for T if there was none there to sip.... you know ;)
The problem with moderns seasons is that, even if they are good (some are VERY good, some are not that good), they are not as memorable as the older seasons, unfortunately...
I think it’s to do with the sheer amount of seasons we get now. Season 4-7 are super memorable to me because there weren’t any seasons in between them (besides AS1), and anticipation would build until the next season was announced. We also didn’t get AS2 immediately after AS1, so it was a big deal!
@@nataliadoe7126 To me, the problem is that production is more worried about creating drama and bombastic plot twist on the newer seasons. It's like nothing more can happen naturally, it's like a lot of things must be scripted, forced, rigged etc. Older seasons were more fresh and way more natural because they weren't overproduced and forced on many aspects. Also, the lack of consistency regarding challenges and pace really doesn't help.
I’m just realizing, you put trixie in the pork chop loading dock 😂😂
Always educational, thanks greengay
My favorite seasons from the 1st gen are seasons 4,5,6,9
As a OG viewer starting from season 1 in 2009 I found this video very informative. period!
Honestly. I loved season 14 for being the first non elimination season. 13 I wasn't hoping symone won. Just that everyone else lost. 15 was just waiting for Sasha to stop blocking the mother toilet with her mother dumps long enough to be crowned. 12 had a straight up sexual predator and was still more watchable than a few of the classic seasons for me.
I've been watching since season 1 and season 16 has taken over a spot somewhere in my top 5. I absolutely adore this season.
Why was Trixie’s photo in the Porkchop scene? 😂😂
S16 has been absolutely great in my opinion! It's my favorite double digit season. I love especially how many little moments there are of the queens reading each other in the werkroom and the confessionals have been really entertaining as well.
i am a newer fan of rpdr (started on 2022) and drag in general and i cannot imagine watching the newer seasons without having watcj every other older season. the very first season i watched was season 5, and i was hooked, but there were also a lot of things i didn’t understand, which i understood after watching the seasons before. honestly, there are just so many reference of drag race in drag race that you really are missing a whole lot if you don’t watch at least every regular season, and tbh, it is very worth it!
ive been watching since season 1 but season 9 has to be my fave because i feel like it had the aspects of those golden 456 seasons but also a modern aspect which is in the newest seasons.
Great observation. Pretty on point!

Yk one thing that I like about the new seasons is the fact that Michelle visage seems so much nicer - I remember her being really shady and other queens openly being scared and/or not liking her and maybe it’s with the whatcha packin episodes that show more to her than what they do on the show (or maybe it’s just other judges and ru saying some out of pocket stuff (ie; the H&M outburst on uk season 2 😅)) but it seems like she has such a good connection with these queens and it’s so nice to see her break the mold of being just “the mean judge” honestly, I love her 💕
S13 was so bad i quit RPDG for awhile. But i gave a chance to s14 and I'm happy I did that! I really enjoyed it and started watching other franchises.
First season I watched was 9 and it was SO GOOD!
Mama, should have mentioned that Sasha was a Fulbright scholar. Very competitive scholarship which notable alumni includes current PM of UK
I found out about drag race in like 2018, my friend was starting from the beginning and we watched season 5 together was so easy to binge the whole show back then, now it’s overwhelming to keep up with every franchise so I just keep up with US,UK,Thailand and Espana
I started watching during the finale of s8 🤣🤣 Then i watched all of s8, the previous seasons and watched AS2 live for the first time. I still think seasons 4~6 &8 were the best, but s16 is going to be right there soon. Truly is the renaissance of drag race ❤
As an OG fan, I did not feel very attacked watching this video.
Seeing this show evolve over the years has been a fun ride. There are lots of things to critique about the show. I’m glad it’s here. I was glad to see Ru back on tv because she was such an important aspect of my childhood and that of many other Black and non Black queer youth of the 1990s.
I feel like we entered a new golden era of Drag Race with seasons 15 and 16
Season 14 is my fav from this era! Ok, the chocolate bar twist was stupid, but it had the best cast.
Thank you omg I love the s14 cast so mucu

idk I loved it
It was a great season
As an "OG" fan I really enjoyed season 12 it had a lot going for it including the best Rusical. But I know other fans that thought it was lackluster. Season 12 (2 UK 5 Allstars and 1 Australia) was(were) the season(s) I dipped after because it became a constant things trying to keep up. Seasons 4,5,6 were the best and seasons and 2 of all stars was probably the best overall season to me.
Edit: turns out I dipped after 13, makes sense
here is the thing. I love S14. I think for the most part the challenges were fun, and you might hate all the non-elminations but I feel like I knew those queens more then almost any other season and they were all fun to watch. it finally gave us something new other then the lipsync for the crown, Catwalk which is top tier as both a runway and a rumix, and the most important thing....Daddy Maddy.
For me, season 16 is the first season since 9 that I’ve been able to sit down and watch through week by week and enjoy. The other ones have felt like a huge chore to watch.
Season 16 feels like a turning point. There was shade and some cattiness but there was also so much love and enjoyment on screen. Someone was friends with at least another queen. While messiness and drama and delusion is often what people crave, I feel like honestly Gen Z is the first generation of queer contestants whose childhoods and experiences, while not perfectly free from queerphobia, are on average far less viscerally traumatic as 30+ year old queens. A lot of the personalities we think of when thinking of drag queens-mean, bitchy, spiteful, catty, rude, delusional-are often a response to bullying and discrimination and the fear of being assaulted or outright murdered for being queer. It’s their armor, but sometimes the armor rusts while they’re still wearing it and it ends up scraping them up in the process of protecting them. So many drag queens in previous seasons have struggled with drinking and drug abuse which often manifest in people as responses to a libertine lifestyle often indulged to kill some pain felt elsewhere.
We still have a long way to go to make queer people feel safe and protected, but queer kids are coming of age in an era where there is a greater widespread acceptance of femmes, trans, and NB peeps. There is also greater awareness and understanding of mental health, and so people who know better, often *do* better. That’s why even Plane Jane, the supposed villain of the season and closeted and repressed growing up, still had enough self-awareness to be receptive to Sapphira’s insight as to why Plane is so critical of other queens. Plane has enough emotional maturity to be self-reflective.
On top of all that, maybe I’m in the minority, but I would rather watch a reality TV show where people are competing with good sportsmanship than breed toxicity and rivalries with each other. That’s why the All Winners season is my all time favorite: The queens still made good TV because they were focused on doing their best and having fun. That’s my personal preference, though.
As an og fan, 12 is probably the best modern season, although 16 is really good
kit Connor being a core audience

I think the season that made us excited was s15 not s16, and tbh the WeHo show didn’t have much of an impact, we don’t really remember this anymore lol s15 gave us SO MANY interesting queens, literally almost all of them
My guess is that it's going to be Nymphia, but my pick has been Sapphira since the Meet the Queens promo.

It's such a shame that S14 was so dissapointing in terms of the twist because the theming was superb and the idea in concept would've been so cool if it weren't for the 500 double saves, it would be cool if they explored that idea once again in a later season
This is interesting. I always assumed the season 13 split premiere/lip sync smackdown was due to the pandemic making them have fewer queens together at once, due to social distancing.
The only season i never watched was all stars 1, but I know everything that happened in it

Season 16 had questionable wins and loses in some episodes, but we ultimately got the top 3 we all wanted. Right now, I am still an avid Nymphia fan, and I do hope she wins, but if she doesn't, I don't really mind it because both Sapphira and Plane are really deserving competitors. The production really nailed it in picking the finale queens this time because even though the fans are divided in terms of biases, we can all still agree that each of the finale queens do have a shot at the crown.
It's like Pokémon, you just gotta catch 'em all.
I can't differentiate between season 13 and 14, I feel like they're the same season, like you can name a queen from these 2 seasons and I can't tell which season they were on.
I'm so OG I used to pay the cable company extra for Logo JUST to watch Drag Race.
