  • Take a Vauxhall VXR8 and give it to Walkinshaw Performance and you end up with a 600 horsepower Australian bred brute. Without doubt THE loudest car I have ever driven ! This car is a proper handful but such a experience to drive.
A huge thank to Colin for letting my drive his baby and share this stunning muscle car with you guys.

This makes me so proud as an Australian, its hugely symbolic of us and our culture. At the same time it brings me to tears seeing Holden's needless and pointless demise and end in real time....and for what? Those responsible can forever go and **** themselves. The bean counters and board of GM shouldn't have had the right to take away something so central to our culture and way of life. It's not the car per se, it's the little piece of enjoyment and happiness that it provided in our lives, something that is so clearly evident on the face of the driver throughout his entire review. For shame.

I’m lucky enough to have spent some time behind the wheel of a few of HSV’s cars. What isn’t mentioned here is that they were comfortable pussycats when you weren’t sinking the boot in. ...and when you did stick the boot in, they shrunk around you and had a level of agility you wouldn’t have expected from something that big. They were kind of a fusion of Euro and US thinking. It’s a tragedy that they no longer exist. Keep it Colin...you have an appreciating asset. They are starting to command silly money back here in Aus.

I have had a couple of Commodore V8s over the years and they were fantastic cars.
The owner touched on something that is often overlooked - I never had to repair any of mine. Just pads, oil servicing and... fuel.
    Lots of fuel!
But, honestly, on the highway, they were actually pretty good on fuel when you weren't getting stuck into it, which... wasn't that often.

Not built for English country lanes, this is an Australian car, built to cover long highway miles, yeah ok, some track days too, at a rather exciting speed. Walkinshaw do all the HSV upgrades in Australia, I hear V8's every night in my suburb, doing burnouts, drifting, and just being loud, nothing unusual about it here. After all, we Aussies produced the fastest 4 door production sedan in the world way back in 1971.

I heard while Holden was alive it had a bunch of rev-head engineers working for them and then we were fortunate enough to have the guys at HSV that took it that step or 2 further. I'm fortunate in that I own a VF HSV R8 Clubsport. With Holden shutting down they are being gobled up like hens teeth and dont even talk about the ever increasing cost of original HSV component parts...regardless, I'm still upgrading to the 547kw supercharged pack in about a months time. As good as a Ferrari in my opinion for a fraction of the price, and so much more fun in so many ways in view of the fact its a basically a regular commodore but worked to the hilt lol

Nice review! Mine (I'm in NSW, AUS) is a 2016 GTS, 6sp manual, and it has been 'enhanced', not by Walkinshaw, but i do have their airbox. I now have just shy of 1000Nm of torque and 410Kw at the rear wheels (~510 at the fly wheel) - ~683 BHP - black as well. I had a different exhaust, the air ram and the pulley kit for the supercharger changed, then re-mapped etc. I'd post a scan of the dyno readout but not sure if i can here. This car is easy enough to drive around, but i agree with old mate, it can absolutely terrify you, and sometimes when you least expect it to. Despite all the traction control, it can and will step out sideways on the gear change, particularly on a very slight corner when you least expect it. Big one for newbies:- Learn at the lights, to let the car in front go, hold and then i go, otherwise i almost end up in their boot - foot on the brake to slow it down. I've had various V8's (HQ, HZ, VZ, VE etc) since i was 17, so thought i was used to it - maybe not hey. Anyhew, that's my 5 cents worth, and if you ever get the chance to drive or own one, go for it :). Cheers, Rosco

parky2310 Mate you wait till you see the new one. 583 horsepower as standard, with the Walkinshaw package it punches out around 746 horsepower. Is louder, handles better, better responsiveness etc. And of course improved interior etc. If you are in the UK unfortunately the new one is going to be in very short supply as it is quite literally the last one. But it is incredible. A true muscle car. As i said it has almost 600 horsepower as standard without the Walkinshaw package lol. Shows how crazy we Aussies are when we build a car like that, and Walkinshaw Australia ( who owns HSV the performance devision for Holden Australia) designs the Walkinshaw package for it and adds almost 200 more horsepower lol. Here that is what they have always done. Build a performance car, then desing and develop a package for it to go faster if you want. If you want performance it is something we have always managed to do. However manufacturing ends in 2017.

When i lived in Sydney 2006-2010 i was fortunate to drive a few Holden HSV and FORD FPV cars. I was going to buy a Holden Monaro coupe but the insurance was nuts. So. Anyway i got to drive the Holden HSV W 427 . Now that was WILD !!!!!!! I did not get to drive the FORD FPV F8 but did get to drive the FPV F6 which had the turbo charged 4l straight 6 . That car was utterly fabulous, but not as Mental as the 427

Hi Mate! I'm from Melbourne Australia. End of the year our v8 heritage is finished and its really sad. Being young and watching Bathurst and peter Brock the legend of v8 supercars. Have a look at Hsv Vf gts. Standard 430kw. Or W1 hsv. Even our Fords were great. Fg f6 or Fgx xr8 or Xr6 turbo are great. These weapons are forever in our hearts. In Australia all these cars are heavily tuned, boosted and cammed. On the streets these cars are all 10 second machines or under. Especially the ford fg xr6 turbo's. Crazy and I'm happy that holden and Ford Australia didn't fail us, just made us so proud to be Australian

Petrol Ped If you get the chance one that is worth looking up is the GTSR W1. An incredible piece of engineering, and shows what HSV here in Australia are truly capable of. Over 600 horsepower as standard, they sourced the LS9 engine no longer in production from GM, had to ensure they could get enough to cover the project. Took the engines and then worked their magic on them, and the work HSV does is truly magic. Unfortunately in a couple of months production ends, ending in October of this year with Ford Australia production endind in October of last year. And both brands whether you are Ford or Holden down here you have to admit truly know how to build a performance car. Over the years iconic Mustang's and Comaros wouldn't compare. Ford Performance Vehicles building the F6, an inline 6 with a single turbo bunching out 368 horsepower. And though it had less power then the V8 it would beat in on the drag strip. Having driven European performance cars and falling in love with the Mercedes AMG's the performance the cars here delivered was more then competitive. The latest what you will know as the VXR8 compares and pushes more power then the C63. There were over the years where there were major differences, the interiors of the Mercs etc were well above. But the new VF Holden is comparable in many respects. It is a sad period in this country and the great cars like you enjoyed in this video soon will no longer be made. The Holden SS was imported to the US and they loved it.

I did a little digging on Autotrader, and found a 2009 model for £12K. Ok, I thought, I can probably run to that. Then I looked at insurance... £2350 for the cheapest quote (I'm 59 btw). Annual road tax £550. Urban fuel economy is about 13mpg. My dreams quickly evaporated.

In the U.S this is called the Chevrolet SS which is not supercharged but plenty of guys retrofit one for about $10,000. I bought a 2017 and it sure is a blast. I rarely have the radio on as I am listening to that wonderful 6.2 liter Chevrolet LS3 rumble, burble and crackle as I row through the gears. That is a Tremec TR6060 manual transmission which is used in the Camaro, Corvette, Dodge Viper and others. The exhaust starting in 2015 is bi-modal, and you can put the car in "Touring" mode and it is quieter, but why do that? Handling is excellent (Magnetic Ride Control) and the Brembo brakes haul the car down quickly and fade free. Unleash the inner you! Be that hooligan!
