Blacksmith Myth - Will a drop of Water on the Anvil make it explode?

  • Join the science discord! / discord I read a myth (below) that said striking a drop of water with a hot iron and hammer will send the hammer flying. luckily I just met a local Blacksmith!
    Trez is a great guy, he has a small channel, but mainly focuses on working as a blacksmith. He makes all his own hammers and tools, and could make you something too!

    "When you spit on a piece of red hot iron, it dances around in a little ball. If you hit the ball with your hammer, the explosion will throw the hammer over the barn and blow a hole in the iron!"

    Why do blacksmiths ring their anvils?
    WELL THEN, Once upon a time long long ago and far far away; on an island where the grass is emerald green,
    A VILLAGE SMITH was shoeing a horse at his open air shop. His large anvil rang with each blow to the shoes. Standing quietly in the shade of the spreading chestnut tree, the horse waited patiently.
    THE DEVIL, passing by, heard the ringing of the anvil and decided to see what was going on. He stood watching as the blacksmith made a wonderful set of new shoes for the horse.
    THE SMITH then proceeded to trim the horse's hooves and nail the shoes in place. The horse stood quietly as this was done, and when the smith finished, the owner of the horse mounted his steed and took him for a trot down the road.
    THE HORSE was noticeably happy with his new shoes, for he danced and he pranced all the way to the corner and back.
    SEEING THIS, the Devil being a hoofed creature himself, decided that he must have a set of these wonderful shoes. He approached the smith and told him to prepare a set of shoes for him.
    THE SMITH (realizing that this was the Devil himself), made a set of shoes too small, trimmed the hooves too short and drove several close nails in each of the devils hooves. He also clinched them quite heavily so they would not come off easily. The Devil in terrible pain, lame and very sore footed went running away and suffered for many days.
    SO to this very day when ever the Devil hears an anvil ringing he makes it a point to stay as far away as possible.
    THIS is also why hanging a horseshoe over the door keeps the Devil away!

    • @beachboardfan9544
      @beachboardfan9544 Před 7 lety +12

      No I mean titanium, because red hot titanium will break apart the hydrogen oxygen bond of water, absorb the oxygen and leave behind sweet explosive hydrogen. I added the alkali metals because all of them are simply reactive with water.
      Appreciate the aggressive comment from a 10yr old tho, wont make much of an adult with pretentiousness and cynicism.

    • @pinruihuang8463
      @pinruihuang8463 Před 7 lety +1

    • @beachboardfan9544
      @beachboardfan9544 Před 7 lety +8

      Yea, Ti is fairly inert until you heat it, not only will it produce an exothermic reaction with oxygen (like most metals) it will also react with the nitrogen in the air in the same way it does with oxygen. A few race engine mfg.'s had some catastrophic failures while testing some Ti components, the Ti got hot enough to combust and well turned into TiO2 and TiN2 (essentially a white-ish powder). Ti is really only useful as as non-friction structural components... unless its goes through extensive surface coating procedures.

    Huh. I've been a professional smith for 22 years and never heard this myth. In Japan, where I trained, its routine to splash water on the anvil to generate a steam explosion and tear the forging scale off the steel. Works well under the power hammer, too -- you use a straw brush to flick water both on top and bottom of your steel. Nice vid!

    Hey Backyard scientist, I've got a new idea to make another explosion. This is called aluminum and iron oxide, with strict rules, this can be dangerous so wear heavy protection.
    Step 1: Powdered iron oxide and aluminium are mixed in a glass breaker. To be safe place it in an a cast-iron vessel filled with sand to control the awesome reaction.
    Step 2: A magnesium ribbon is lit to ignite the powdered metal mixture as the temperature rises to 4,530 degrees F, the aluminium tears the oxygen away from the iron oxide. The whole area is showered with red hot burning metal.
    Step 3: Look in the pot and aw at the aftermath.

  • @Ahris_aus_der_8._Dimension

    My theory on this is as follows:
    Water, or steam, separates at a temperature of 1,700°C into hydrogen and oxygen.
    This process is called "thermal dissociation".
    When forging steel, the workpiece is heated to "only" 950-1,250°C.
    Now when the hammer strikes the workpiece, a higher pressure is created underneath or in the water,
    which temporarily leads to higher temperatures.
    The temperatures thus generated could be sufficient to split the water directly into hydrogen and oxygen,
    which would result in a small explosion of gas.
    I don't know if this is right, but at least I can imagine it like this ^^

    What you just tried is called wet forging. It's actually an old Japanese blacksmithing technique that is used to blast the scale off your Steel leaving you with a much cleaner peace.

  • @adhdrenalin4392
    @adhdrenalin4392 Před 3 lety

    What caused the sparks is that he heated the steel up almost to the point of melting it, not actually the water. You can see it sparkling right as he takes it out of the forge.

    Also, if you pour borax on the surface, and let it melt, then smack it, you get lots of sparks. Just be careful they do BURN. Also, hot metal is hot, even if it doesn't look like it. Burnt my hand a few times picking up black metal that was roughly 900 degrees

    It's called wet forging or blast forging or scale blasting, depends on who you ask but it's definitely not a blacksmyth or a blacksmith myth, any blacksmith or bladesmith would tell you it won't cause and explosion or break an anvil. it just throws the forge scale off.

    As a blacksmith, the water isn't doing much. The sparks shooting everywhere are the carbon from the over heated steel. When you see it sparkling as he pulls it out, that is the carbon burning out.
