PRE-ARRIVAL: Firefighters battle fire in auto repair shop, North Whitehall, PA.

- At 11:51AM Tuesday, Lehigh County Fire Radio transmitted the box for a structural fire at 3220 Mauch Chunk Road in North Whitehall Township.
Additional information provided to Chief 16 from the fire dispatcher was one caller reporting smoke from the building.
When Chief 16 arrived, he found a 1-story auto repair shop with fire and smoke pushing from the building and struck out the second alarm.
Someone backed a pick-up truck to the overhead doors in the rear and ran inside to save the tool chest. They chained it and used the pick-up to pull it out of the garage before it engulfed in flames.
Volunteers from North Whitehall, Whitehall, South Whitehall and Catasauqua assisted at the fire.

Clearly the owner of this property paid the fire marshal in advance to make sure the building was totally destroyed so he could get a new one.

They did a great job saving the foundation
This made my day. Thank you!

@supreme 2005 You are a MORON. They were slow as hell, they could have put the fire out in seconds, but they took their time and let the structure is RUINED because of their incompetence. Imagine if this was your home, IDIOT. Would you want THEM to treat it like this??
A geniune waste of good water.
I bet for people watching this that know what they’re doing when it comes to firefighting, this is painful to watch for them. I just have a feeling.
Extremely, more then anything else they just wouldn’t put water on the fire, at one point the had left the nozzle to go do something, I know they aren’t refilling on air because they aren’t masked up (which they should be) but it’s like the fires burning the roof off of the place and they just left to go have a pep talk or something? Is it anyone’s place to question what happened, no, because who’s to say what resources/training they had available but still it took way too long for them to get water on the fire. .
The thing that scared me at first was seeing the supply lines brand new never showing any service wear or dirt. That's a huge red flag if your truck pulls clean never used supply lines.

They protected the A exposure. The garage was totally engulfed before they arrived. A lot of them probably should’ve been wearing their SCBA’s. Other than that, all of the people who think that they would’ve done it so much better should probably put a cork in it.
Guys, Just because you're outside doesn't make the smoke less deadly. The lack of SCBA use is unbelievable!!!

The guy on the two-and-a-half at the rear of the building did more to put that fire out than anyone else on the fireground.
happyjack880 and he should have transitioned to an interior attack after he had the bulk of the fire knocked. That was their best chance of getting the upper hand. No chance of that tho, they were thinking hit it hard from the yard from the jump.
Did you see how the fire was extinguished as soon as he put water on it. lol
AND had he properly handled that line, even more could have been done. Zero maneuverability when you're sitting on top of the nozzle. Train to handle a deuce alone while standing and you can put just about ANYTHING out. Still, a good example of big water for big fire. 1.75" handlines are for recruits and car fires.
@@Westbankfireman I know, that in our country the buildings are mostly brick/concrete, but we don't ussualy use bigger hoses than 2". We sometimes use only 1" but like 3-4 lines from different sides. You could destroy more with water than with fire, if you use too much exces water.
happyjack880 q
The lack of SCBA is my biggest concern especially at an auto shop where yiu have no idea what's burning. This was a total loss before they showed up, and there wasn't much they could do. Obviously a Vollie area as the first due engine showed up with just one guy. Did you see the giant tanker as well? This isn't mid town Manhattan. I'll bet they have limited water supply. I honestly don't see anything really wrong here tactically. The tactical right wall was already breaching when they arrived, you have to watch your collapse zones, so any attack with hand lines through that window is out of the question, which is why the truck spotted where it did.
This is completely gone no matter who shows up. Keep it from affecting the exposures and make sure everyone goes home. Not much else to do.
Dawning and SCBA IN THE SMOKE made me cringe. In my area, you can't be in the hot zone without being on-air, no exceptions. Other than that was a solid response.
From other videos I dont think this crew even owns those kits.
The SCBA bothered me, too. God only knows what was in that smoke. No criticism of the firefighters, but they need to protect themselves first.
Just a question. As a British firefighter I'm wondering why there always seems to be a very long time before water is turned on. On our appliances we have a couple of hose reals and an 1800ltr tank on board that can issue water within seconds of arrival. This gives another firefighter time to connect to a hydrant.
Is there a lack of training or knowledge in the USA to fight/ contain the fire? I'm not being disrespectful but genuinely would like to know!
From my knowledge it depends the area I’ve seen a lot of locations arrive and get water on it ASAP but not to certain, hope that helped a bit
You say this while watching one of the worst fire departments. Don’t try and ride yourself above us because American firefighters are a different breed.
@@Emtmiller not at all. I'm not riding myself above anyone! Just a genuine question. Also having folded lengths of hose seems awkward and timely to get charged. Having coiled lengths that can be thrown out instantly reduces a lot of time. Wasn't aware they were the worst department either😅.

In Britain, when firefighters have breathing apparatus sets on, they always use it. They go in as an organised team where they are monitored, and when they get low on air, they are replaced by another BA crew if necessary.

Wear your mask!!! Quit letting them dangle from the regulators, they can develop cracks in the masks and the regulator can break. Avoid the collapse zone at that garage
As others have mentioned, the lack of using SCBA was terrible. There were surely all kinds of chemicals and poisonous fumes there. And yes, while it did take agonisingly long to get water on the fire, it wouldn't have made much difference. This was a lost cause before they even arrived.
It reminds me of a big restaurant fire here in Odessa, Ukraine, some years ago. A beautiful place, mainly constructed from wood (log cabin style) and with thatched roofs. It was the middle of Summer, hot and dry weather. The place was already fully ablaze before they arrived. It burned down to the ground, literally nothing left, but fortunately no injuries. I'd post a link, but CZcams tends to remove or hide them. Fortunately they were able to rebuild the place, though not in its original style.
I hope these people were able to do the same, it must be so horrible to see your business go up in flames :(
Neglect of usage of SCBA often goes back to the days when fireman praised themselves as "Smoke Eaters". Those should be long gone.
If all the firefighters, police and others had worn SCBA during recovery efforts after 9/11, there would have been a lot fewer cancer deaths over the years since.
Air contaminants can be insidious. It's obviously not just the smoke or chemical leaks that are hazards. The post - 9/11 body count has proven that.

This is sometimes what happens with volunteer departments. People arrive in their personal vehicles because they are at their full time jobs and its closer to the scene. I remember hearing calls over the radio for no apparatus on scene and having to dispatch my full time engine company to the scene. Lots of mistakes, this is why volunteer departments need to have the same training as full time departments but no one wants to pay for the training.
I come from a small rural department in southwest Missouri and 99% of our volunteers are FF1&2, HAZ-MAT Ops, VRT and either EMR or EMT certified. All of our driver/operators are required to have a certified EVOC and pump operators certs. Hell if our little department can do it anyone can. And we do not allow our personnel to respond directly to the scene in their POV, unless all the apparatus needed is already on scene or in route then the IC can either have them respond with a brush truck or POV. Only our Chief officer are allowed to respond direct on the initial alarm. There is really no excuse for no training other than the officers failing to provide it. The State of Missouri will provide 2 free certified classes per department per year, all of our local departments Chiefs will work out a plan on which department is going to host each class and make a schedule of these classes so they aren't duplicating the class. Then all the departments can attend these free classes. It has worked out great for all of these departments and it really shows on fire scenes. We do 2-3 County wide training classes such as water supply, large scale incidents, interior operations etc. All the departments are universal in our hose sizes and coupling, accountability, radio frequencies, RIT equipment etc. The only thing is our SCBAs, some prefer Scott, some MSA and one has Dragers. And every department except 1 have 4500 psi packs, one department still uses 2216 packs.
Here in europe that kind of training is free
Watch a few videos on "Brandweer Lunteren" and say its because they're volonteers. There is no excuse for how badly the U.S. equips and trains its volonteers.
Bob Schmidt are you a Firefighter?
My volunteer department has all the same training actually fire and medical most of our guys are cross trained as either EMT or paramedics as well so no lack of training here the training is available if you want to invest the time to do it for us volunteers its not just a job like it is for you so called pros were not here getting paid for it we do it because we want to do it and do it to the best of our ability we love doing it shit most of the time we beat the only paid department in our area on scene 70% of firemen and departments nationwide are volunteer atleast most likely more here in Southern Missouri maybe 80 or 90s of departments here are volunteer outside of the major cities.

I was listening to the scanner. There was only one call that came in on this fire and it was made by a passerby. When Bill got to the scene, he called dispatch to confirm fire. Also, they had issues w/water pressure.

That's soo true
Did it for 25 years so I know what it take to dedicate time to the fire house. But training, training, training!! Water pressure failures happen! But this fire was more about how the incident was run. Putting the tower up basically for the sake of putting it in service was 100% unnecessary. Nobody was working as a cohesive unit. It was more of a free for all. The guys had the willingness to work but there was no command. It was a freelance job and the guys with the white helmets need to held accountable for that show. They need to watch this (I'm sure they did) and go over it step by step. This video can be used as a drill by Whitehall and other departments..

It was a cheaply constructed concrete block building of low value and they were not going to do much more than just enough to keep it from spreading.

Seems like there was an issue getting water to the site. It's painful to watch everything moving so slow. I'm not a fire professional, but it seems like a couple of 3/4" garden hoses started at the beginning of the fire would have really have helped considering how long it took to get first water on the fire.
@TheBenPatches also worth noting that areas that do have good firehall coverage with good response times are less likely to have a video because the firetrucks are on scene so fast. Theres just less time for someone to happen by and take a video of it before the fire is gone.
The very first mistake is when the tower passed the engine in the street and became the initial attack apparatus. Most ladders only carry 300-500 gallons on average, so it usually only take a couple of minutes to blow through that! If they had pulled the engine in first at least they'd have had probably 750-1000 gallons to use while the 2nd due secured a water supply.
4:04 Looks like they had a hydrant across the street, and a tanker parked and waiting. Getting water to the site wasn't the problem, i think.

I’m not going to become involved a pointless CZcams pissing match but, early in the video there’s fire visible over the roof on the opposite side of the building indicating the fire is already venting.
The window on the side we can see fails and fire can also be seen venting from the main doors long before the first apparatus arrives.
You can believe what you’d like, but the building is heavily involved, well beyond the capabilities of 1 3/4 lines.
Also, at no point does the FD do any form of ventilation that would have let air affect the fire.

I am a firefighter in Germany, it is always interesting for me to see how colleagues work elsewhere in the world. And what I see here are US colleagues and they do a very good job.

Inhale those toxic fumes...SMH!
Well first off they probably have the "save your air" guidelines like what we have here in NYC. Then of course your thinking that these FF's are all condemned to die a slow miserable death from cancer, huh? That itself is not entirely true. If you were to take the time to read all the studies done on firefighter cancer, you will find that only about 9% of the this country's FF's developed cancer, that's it. And of that group of the medical professionals could only confirm 38% of the FF cancers were directly related to firefighting, the other 62% could not be confirmed either way whether or not their cancer was directly related to firefighting or not. Of the 38%, the cancer studies revealed that most of FF's whose cancer was directly related to firefighting was because of all things....asbestos exposure. As it turns out all the FF's whose cancer can be directly related to firefighting, were a bunch of smoke eaters from the 60's, 70's, even early 80's, who scarfed down a healthy side of asbestos with all their smoke, especially in Boston. Oh excuse me....Bahs..ton. If you go to NFPA.org and read their fact sheet on FF cancer, you will find that it's not all doom and gloom the muckraking morons in the mainstream media portray it to be.
@@chiefrich1804 so dont you think that given the nfpa info that asbestos was a major contributor to ff cancer, and the age and composition of the building it would still be a better idea to use the scba then risk the long term chance of cancer?
@@bthestigman9667 Well, first off, being that all asbestos has been removed from 99% of all the buildings across the county over the last 40 years, the chance of firefighters encountering any today in large quantities is slim to none. Second, anyone who owns property today must pass strict building codes that include having there buildings tested for asbestos and radon. Third, not every old building had asbestos in it. And finally so long as the firefighters here don't stick their faces in the smoke and eat it down with a fork and knife, they will be fine.
Success! They saved the tire.
No hurry here, let's enjoy the warmth from the fire. It's winter here, Geezz!! Small fire depts amaze me, they are so nonchalant!! Do they know what kind of chemicals they are breathing in right now? This is so wrong on so many levels.
This is what happens when you become a firefighter so you can tell the ladies at the bar you're a firefighter. C'mon fellas. Stop toying with this and knock it out.
As a firefighter. It had taken them way to long to get water on this fire. To long to get hoses charged and hydrant hook up. A little sloppy lol.
New Apostles I don’t know if they could have saved the building if they got water on sooner or not. Was this this a full time department or volunteer but they did seam a little disorganized by not being on scene it is hard to tell what was really going on.
why does everyone have piss opinions about departments? even my towns department has a "keyboard chief" review. keep your opinions to your selves. a department is a department, you wanna see bad, search Grants Pass rurual fire department..
A LITTLE SLOPPY is an under statement.
@@davidglaum2538 Does it matter if it's career or volunteer?
Chief should be fired, not a single FF with SCBA on the fire ground area. Enjoy cancer after sucking it in right there infront of you
Fire videos are really interesting. In almost everyone I watch the fire department seems really laid back and slow.
It's just a building.. As long as lives aren't at stake.
@@mrzerkaman yep. When it's confirmed unoccupied and already well involved there's no sense trying to get hurt
This is the result of a society where people don't want to volunteer their time or that bosses will not let employees volunteer with fire companies and leave work for working fires. Everyone wants to complain about how slow of a response time or how those that showed up handled themselves, but nobody wants to volunteer. It's sad.
5 1/2 minutes in ... and i kept wondering when the firefighters that ... you know ... actually fight fires were going to show up. having said that, that fire department is pretty good at dispatching alot of firetrucks, and some guys that can point at parking spots for them and stuff.
at this point there just mobilizing the tower to make a scene lmao
Every time I watch American firefighters I cant believe how slow and disorganized they are. At first I thought it was just one time. But I noticed its every time
>watches one video on youtube
WOW wow are americans so slow and disorganized
>doesnt realize there are thousands of Departments across the Country.
Leave it to a foreigner to be this ignorant.
Wow! They extinguished fire after everything is gone. Wonderful!?
Next day: "Uh, Mr. Jones? Seems we found some additional items on your vehicle needing repair..."
Definitely a "everyone goes home but the homeowner" moment. I can't tell if they were only trained to Mod 2 or they stick with in house training...
Talk about being first on the scene way2go Bill excellent coverage all day long
After reading the comments I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the firefighters weren't doing things right.
Just take your time lads, no rush.
Why is it that 95% of them dont have their scba on? I am watching the guys 3' from the fire with no air? Where is the training?
I pay everyday(and night mostly) for being Mr bad Lt FF who put out car fires without one.. my lungs are shot.. and have been disabled for over 10 years, smoke eaters are bad boys, just don't tell your lungs..
*Very cool video! greetings from Firefighters from Russia*
Nice!

@@user-bj7hc8fi8o , а какие у них другие правила?
Being a firefighter must be terrifying

"Hey....we just got this ladder truck, don't let them put it out til we get it set up and squirting!" Really hard to watch.
no kidding! for a 16ft tall building!
I guess because ladder truck starts putting H2O downstream all other attack stops? There's still interior fire and they are just standing around. For a little bit atleast.
I don’t know much about firefighting, but I was wondering why they wanted to use that so bad while the roof was still intact, and they had hoses at either open end.
Ron eagle exactly what I was thinking when i saw them setting it up. Lol
You can use the ladder to put out the fire from a high position. But it would have been better to get a second "normal" firetruck instead.
