Good job fella's ( and fallers lol ) . If you put a ring or shackle or carabiner into the loop of the alpine butterfly and run the tail of the rope through that , it's less friction and easier on the rope . I used the method a few months back and used a largish gal chain link , worked great , only cheap rope so more prone to damage pulling rope through rope .
Buckin, Please pass this message on to Hogan to let him know how much his cutting looks like you and the way you do things. In my opinion that is one of the greatest compliments a person could give him. Over my years of following people on CZcams, the Internet and personal experience I have seen a good sample of people in my 77 and one half years to believe I have become a descent judge of how people do their thing in the woods and Buckin, old friend, you stand at the top of the pile by a considerable amount, again, in my judgement only. Many a logger that has turned heavily to mechanization usually have lost a tremendous amount of skill as a faller, a bucker and generally their skills in the use of a chainsaw in timber harvesting. You have stayed close to your knowledge base and continued to learn on every cut over the years. I refer everyone I come across that has desire to develop his skills and knowledge base in woodsman-ship to tune in to this channel for the best possible place to learn, while being as safe as possible. I was shown this by a truck driver 50 years ago and over time, forgot how to do it. I have an alternative type of wagon hitch I use but it does tend to cripple the ropes after a while. Thanks for reminding me that I once knew this knot, I'll start using it again. Be good, be safe and be lucky my friend. Above all, be lucky. No matter what we do to stay safe, fate and nature sometimes has other ideas on the matter.

Buckin' I would like to tell you a story about kindness and how my faith in humanity has been somewhat restored. I live in Southampton Ontario Canada and I have a small campfire wood business on the side of the road out in front of my farm. I sell split ash, maple and beach that has been dried for 2 years and my bags are twice the size of the bags sold at all the big stores in town for the same price. I sell a reasonable amount of bags every year and people have been very honest by putting money in the lock box out on the side of the road... The odd time I would be short the price of a bag or two for whatever reason and it doesn't bother me much... amazingly enough people have come back and settled up with me and now every bag is accounted for. I can't tell you how good this makes me feel and my faith in humanity is restored. I run a few husky's and a Stihl 661 for the big wood. I love your videos and continue to learn a lot. Keep on posting this awesome content it's great to watch at the end of a long day! Cheers to kindness!

I have used that hitch with rope before down in the great state of Texas. They called it a different name. I won't post this name because I wish not to offend the awesome people in the awesome state of Louisiana. It has many uses as a makeshift on the spot Come along. I enjoyed watching you use this special technique in your video. Thank you Buckin Billy Ray. Used the poor man many of times to keep the trees off the hydro wires on the right of ways , we would clip a steel Carabiner into the loop if you had one handy. Nice to see you two working together ,it is the best part of a mentors day when a young climber gets it and shows a passion for the trade. Nice work

Hi Billy, been on a spree watching your vids, new and old. Old man winter does that to me. He's hard on my old bones. On these real cold bone chillin days, I like to sit back where it's warm, tend the stove, and do my recreational stuff. Quick tip for ya on the "rope-a-long". I use the truckers hitch but that's not the tip. I have a tenancy to babel sometimes ..... On your alpine butterfly knot you can clip on a carabiner then open the gate and slip the working end of your rope through. This does 2 things: saves ya from pulling all the working side of the rope through the loop, and provides a means to reduce friction giving you a slight advantage of not fighting the friction while pulling. Also saves a bit on rope wear. Hopefully you find this helpful. Now if you may, please school me. I've never run a full wrap handle. Is it more of a logger thing? Do I not know what I'm missing? Should I have them on my ground saws.... MS461 and 066 M? Pretty sure even if I do expirement with full wraps that I'll keep my 440 as is. Handle wise. Keep having a blast Buckin! When I was working for a tree company we used to make that loop in the rope, your "poor man's come-along." We called it the "turkey hauler". The boss would tell us to tie a turkey hauler in that rope and hook a snatch block in it. It truly is amazing how much leverage you can get with just a couple guys on that rope!
I have been watching your videos for days prepping to cut down a 22-24 inch Hickory tree. Thank you for making this. I've cut down some trees, but none this big. I think I can get it aimed right where I want now. We will see how it goes. One thing I learned was about the lean, but I'm not sure you covered this. I'm fairly sure you have somewhere, if it if falling in a specific direction it will still keep that lean even if you offset hinge. I learned that from the Husky channel. I have definitely watched your channel the most. I think I have learned a lot. It reminds me of Construction Safety videos we would watch before going out to do a dangerous job.
Billy, I really appreciate your content, I have a small piece of land and a few years ago got a power saw but was nervous to use it on anything big, I have learned a lot from your videos. And gained confidence. And I can do a decent job sharpening a chain. Shine on

I started wearing suspenders at 25 working as a handyman. From 16-22 I wore a tool belt every work day and couldn't believe the difference when I finally wised up! I used to swing a 23 oz. California framing hammer too in my 'tough guy' younger days 😂
As a greenhorn I got a tree stuck on its stump (rolled it and hung up in another tree) I used a poor mans come along but with two “eyes” to yank it down myself. Great trick! Good on ya.
I love watching your videos. Your situation is alot like mine. My dad is teaching me to be a tree climber like your teaching your son. My dad has different ways of teaching but he's just like you when it comes to not needing that fancy dancy rigging equipment. He's all natural on his rigging. And that's how I wanna and am gonna learn it. I'm learning alot from your vids that my dad hasn't showed me yet. He and my mom are divorced and I don't get to see him much. My mom and dad still love each other they just don't get along for long periods of time. My dad has been a tree climber for going on 34 years. I'm 16 I have back problems and apparently I've been bruising a nerve in my wrist but I'm not gonna complain about it and no matter problems I get I'm gonna do what I wanna do and be a tree climber. My dad brought me a belt and I bought some spikes a lanyard and a new stihl chainsaw. I've been practicing on a tree in our back yard that has root rot. My dad isn't the first tree climber on his side of the family. It's in my blood and I learned all the knots and the general knowledge on falling a tree bucking it and climbing it. Next I need to learn is what to do once I'm in the tree lol. Anyway just thought id share since our situations are similar. Personally I’m recovering from a knee replacement surgery and must tell you that when the daggum thing is throbbing out of control and I’m laid up here with ice on the knee...there’s still a happy smile on my face whilst I enjoy yet another action packed, super informative video. Hi Billy, been on a spree watching your vids, new and old. Old man winter does that to me. He's hard on my old bones. On these real cold bone chillin days, I like to sit back where it's warm, tend the stove, and do my recreational stuff.
Quick tip for ya on the "rope-a-long". I use the truckers hitch but that's not the tip. I have a tenancy to babel sometimes .....
On your alpine butterfly knot you can clip on a carabiner then open the gate and slip the working end of your rope through. This does 2 things: saves ya from pulling all the working side of the rope through the loop, and provides a means to reduce friction giving you a slight advantage of not fighting the friction while pulling. Also saves a bit on rope wear. Hopefully you find this helpful.
Now if you may, please school me. I've never run a full wrap handle. Is it more of a logger thing? Do I not know what I'm missing?
Should I have them on my ground saws.... MS461 and 066 M? Pretty sure even if I do expirement with full wraps that I'll keep my 440 as is. Handle wise.

When I was working for a tree company we used to make that loop in the rope, your "poor man's come-along." We called it the "turkey hauler". The boss would tell us to tie a turkey hauler in that rope and hook a snatch block in it. It truly is amazing how much leverage you can get with just a couple guys on that rope!
You got me at "yep im the wuss" only started with tree work alittle more than a year ago its been really interesting to see how other ppl do it.
OMG I busted outloud on that one(wuss)! SO many things in life are NOT what you expect in fact 180 degrees opposite.

I have been watching your videos for days prepping to cut down a 22-24 inch Hickory tree. Thank you for making this. I've cut down some trees, but none this big. I think I can get it aimed right where I want now. We will see how it goes. One thing I learned was about the lean, but I'm not sure you covered this. I'm fairly sure you have somewhere, if it if falling in a specific direction it will still keep that lean even if you offset hinge. I learned that from the Husky channel.
I have definitely watched your channel the most. I think I have learned a lot. It reminds me of Construction Safety videos we would watch before going out to do a dangerous job.
Billy, I really appreciate your content, I have a small piece of land and a few years ago got a power saw but was nervous to use it on anything big, I have learned a lot from your videos. And gained confidence.
And I can do a decent job sharpening a chain.

Just found your content. Been slowly learning to fell and clear my 5 acres myself for a start up homestead. You have such a contagious positive attitude and i love the content. Easiest subscribe in a while.
I started wearing suspenders at 25 working as a handyman. From 16-22 I wore a tool belt every work day and couldn't believe the difference when I finally wised up! I used to swing a 23 oz. California framing hammer too in my 'tough guy' younger days 😂
As a greenhorn I got a tree stuck on its stump (rolled it and hung up in another tree) I used a poor mans come along but with two “eyes” to yank it down myself. Great trick! Good on ya.
I love watching your videos. Your situation is alot like mine. My dad is teaching me to be a tree climber like your teaching your son. My dad has different ways of teaching but he's just like you when it comes to not needing that fancy dancy rigging equipment. He's all natural on his rigging. And that's how I wanna and am gonna learn it. I'm learning alot from your vids that my dad hasn't showed me yet. He and my mom are divorced and I don't get to see him much. My mom and dad still love each other they just don't get along for long periods of time. My dad has been a tree climber for going on 34 years. I'm 16 I have back problems and apparently I've been bruising a nerve in my wrist but I'm not gonna complain about it and no matter problems I get I'm gonna do what I wanna do and be a tree climber. My dad brought me a belt and I bought some spikes a lanyard and a new stihl chainsaw. I've been practicing on a tree in our back yard that has root rot. My dad isn't the first tree climber on his side of the family. It's in my blood and I learned all the knots and the general knowledge on falling a tree bucking it and climbing it. Next I need to learn is what to do once I'm in the tree lol. Anyway just thought id share since our situations are similar. Hey buckin...I just want to thank you again for sharing your life and love with the buckin army community. Personally I’m recovering from a knee replacement surgery and must tell you that when the daggum thing is throbbing out of control and I’m laid up here with ice on the knee...there’s still a happy smile on my face whilst I enjoy yet another action packed, super informative video. Makes recovery so much more enjoyable. Still absolutely the best viewing material out there bar none. Especially enjoy the idio incracies lol.
I enjoyed seeing how you used a running bowline and butterfly knots. Seeing how it resulted was great too.
