Ellen Cole I think it's at the 6 season, he believed he was being held back from becoming a bigger star, greater movies. Anyway he was difficult to work with, complaint about his lines, it turned out to be a mutual agreement. He served as a marine, and was university educated, he did have a successful career but not as big as he believed he was capable. I hope this is helpful.

There's a vid on CZcams with an interview from the director/producer. Pretty much he thought the show was beneath him. And the story lines weren't good enough etc. I'm sure age and wisdom grew him out of that type of attitude, they were all still young. According to later interviews Pernell said he didn't regret the decision. Ironically, if he'd stuck around he probably would've had a chance like ML to make the kind of episodes he wanted. ML learned dramatic acting, script writing and directing all on Bonanza and went on to produce his own shows. ML made some rl mistakes but none of us are perfect. We just have the chance to live our mistakes in the shadows rather than in the limelight.

@Jimbo Dunn Aww, that's the thing with this and The Rifleman, they're more than Westerns. Bonanza, especially as the years passed, dealt with some serious issues. But my true delight is the genuine relationship between Dan Blocker and Michael Landon, it makes Little Joe and Big Hoss so much more enjoyable. I think their love for each other in RL carried over into the show. I think that's what made the show last as long as it did. Enjoy these oldies Jimbo!

So unfortunate that the Ponderosa Ranch was sold just to build a 18,000 square foot mansion and close down the theme park.
I had a thought that could have brought in a lucrative amount of money into the Lake Tahoe region. They could have placed a Ponderosa Themed Restaurant and Casino on the Nevada side that promoted tourism and drove tourists to the park. They could have allowed for independent filmmakers like myself to film on the property as well as mainstream television and film production companies. They should have started a studio lot there as well. What they threw away was the ability to have a Hollywood major staple in filmmaking that was not just limited to Westerns but other types of films as well. Ultimately creating a market that would generate millions of dollars annually. However all is not lost if they can use the General Area on a new property with enough land to facilitate. They could even move forward in time with Bonanza in the modern day at present and film the defendants of the Characters depicted in the long running series. #DanShrigley

The show was set a hundred years earlier than it was made, so 1959, when the show began, they were attempting to portray 1859, and in 1960, they were attempting to portray 1860, and so on, not to the letter, but that was the general gist of their timeline. There were events that were out of sync, that in history didn't occur until later, or were purely fiction. The show wasn't perfect, and neither were the props. I don't think they intended that we would be watching it with a critical eye. The series ran from 1959 through 1973, so that equated to 1859 through 1873.

I will never grasp why this series went on as long as it did. Adam Cartwright was the star, the intelligent, wise, finest actor in that craft...Hos played several good lead man roles and all of Adams were great. However Ben and the hot tempered, emotionally off the beam Little joe is ust too much to watch. Little skinny crazy loon, entireley immature, ruined the series by explosions of needless temper that all his family never tried to correct, or he giggled like a 3-year-old, found a petty girl to kiss and wanted to marry instantly...schizophinic or bi-polar.
Our culture, very low on the scale loved it and never saw the whole story, the ridiculous of it...3 sons still 13 years old when 25-40 years of age, getting permission to or from Paw to blow their noses. Once a wekk Ben and the Little son has big temper tantrums, the next scene is Ben treating all like little kids and hugging Hoss & the youngest one...crazy stuff that Pernell tossed the upcoming wealth away because his nerves were getting shattered.

I usually like Bonanza, but this was so overdone as to be ludicrous. Writers, director and actors all overdid it on this one, especially Landon. In every other episode of Bonanza if little Joe had gotten up in Ben's face like that Ben and likely Hoss and Adam would have hogtied him. And slapped him till he got hold of himself. Sad, sad episode. The worst Bonanza ever, and there have been some dogs. Few, but they exist. This leads the pack.
