  • A post on Andrew Stuart's site (see video 9) pointed me to this classic Sudoku collected by a puzzle maker who went by the name of Ruud in the early days of Sudoku, when interest in these puzzles was first sweeping the planet. Ruud made up a collection of some of the most difficult puzzles that were around then, and this is one of them.
I decided to approach this puzzle by continuing to explore the method I have been experimenting with in these videos. The puzzle supplied all of the 4s in the initial cross-hatching. It also supplied a 5 and a 7. The 5 didn't really lead anywhere, but the 7 made it possible to place another 7 where shown in the video that filled in all the rest of the 7s. And this, it turned out, was enough to solve this puzzle. Was the last number served up from the initial clues the Sudoku telling me how it wanted to be solved? This is actually not the first time I have encountered something like this. I will put this concept in the category of things to be explored further.
Another interesting thing about this puzzle is that it hits an impasse but a breakthrough then is possible with a bit of analysis. The red numbers and highlighting show how that works.
