    And this is why Shostakovich is my favourite composer.

    I was listening to this and thinking "damn this orchestra is hyper precise at very fast speeds wow" until I realized, halfway through, the speed was set to 1.25x 💀

    This is his most overlooked symphony and, while it's not as great as his later works, it's still nice to hear a happy piece from him... until you get a few minutes in!

      I think that it's not good in terms of structure and orchestration, but I think it's one of the most enjoyable ones.

      You are right. He just doesn't quite nail this like he does with the other symphonies. But he was only 24 when he wrote it, and was still searching for the niche he undoubtedly found.

      this is Shostakovichs pisstake on communism... if you listen you can feel it... the horrendous stupidity and atrocity of it... they even had to blackmail him to become a bolshevik.... what a legend

    I started with Shostakovich from his 5th symphony, then 1st and 4th. Now I check every one after another as it was created. So I needed to listen 2nd and 3rd. Every one is amazing, but his 4th and 5th I guess are the best so far.
    Next one 6th and 7th are on my list. I expect more greatness :-)

    The andante section kind of reminds of the symphony no.10 opening at times (11:10)

    The entire choral ending is a little insufferable but the cataclysmic unison passage starting at 21:00 and the 4-minute buildup to it (starting 16:04) is definitely a highlight!

    I can't figure out where (what some titles elsewhere claim is) the prevailing tonality of E flat major is designated in this symphony. To look at the score the designation at the beginning of the staves would indicate C major (since the work is not in the minor). Anybody technically expert enough to weigh in?

    • @classicore22
      @classicore22 Před 11 měsíci +2

      Look at the ending: the work flits between a bunch of keys until it finally arrives in E-flat major at the end.

    He wasn't very nice to piccolo players. Really? High B-Flat at triple piano? DAFUQ?
