  • Hi,
Is it worth upgrading the Rear shocks on the (early) T100?
    let's find out.
Plus, as I am riding around on the "test ride" I am reminded of a scary incident that must have been very distressing for the chap who had his motorcycles stolen.
I recount what happened and wondered what I possibly would have done in the same position.
    What would you do?

Evening Keith. I think it's safe to say that it's a given that the Ikons are going to give you a better ride than standard BUT - that's a considerable difference in length, which will rake out your front end, and also reduce your ground clearance in corners, thus making things ground-out more easily. I hope they work out for you all the same.
Regarding the bike thieves, we might have two (or more) bikes, but we only have one life. We have to hope they get what's coming to them. 🤞

      Thanks for commenting Martin.
Another viewer said the same thing.
In operation I can't really tell any difference other than the improved ride quality, Its still early days though.
As for the scroats, let's hope you're correct.
I've never heard of anything like that around here.
It was a few years ago.

Morning Keith, those shocks were on the softest setting not the hardest, looking at how much it went down when you sat on it I would say that you need to go up one or probably two clicks to get the sag right for your weight, all the best buddy 👍

Thanks Mike, you are absolutely right.
I don't know what I was thinking, I did spot it once it was on you tube but to be honest it was too late to take it down and correct.
I wondered who'd be the first to spot the deliberate mistake.

Take care. You are changing the handling characteristic,s of the bike.
Lowering the rear shocks will alter the rake of the forks which will in turn make for a weird wobbles through the handle bars and you may end up waking up with a crowd around you. To get round this is easily done simply adjusting the form length

      Thanks for your comments.
I certainly don't want to wake up with a crowd around me!
Having said that, it rides great and now that I have adjusted them they seem much better than stock.

Unbelievable tale about the bike theft. That wouldn't work in the states.... Most of us have equalizers to even the odds. Maybe a little of the wild west is left in us😂. Glad you are getting your bike set up the way you want it. Take care friend!

Hi Wally. Yes must of been scary. But I have never heard of anything like that, particularly in our area ever before so it is an isolated incident.
I'm glad that we don't have guns. ( Well 99.9% of us)

Hi Mate, they were weren't they.
I'm sure that combined with the front springs it has improved the ride.

Back in the day ,we used to ride on what ever suspension & tyres that came with the bike , to get our moneys worth . Once the FVQ ( fade very quick ) shocks were knackered on our Hondas , we fitted Koni’s which lasted for life . We didn’t replace anything until it was worn out & needed it . Our motto was ,if it ain’t broke why try & fix it .

I completely agree. We never had the money or the time to swop things out just for the sake of it.
I think times change though, more money and the time to do a bit of minor "tinkering"
The kids will have enough when I'm gone and they won't begrudge dad a pair of second hand shocks off eBay.
      Will they🤨

@@shottostravels Ah why not the kids will only probably waste it on frivolous stuff anyway , if you leave ‘em too much in yer will . Ikon shocks are supposed to be a continuation of Koni , produced down under in Aussie land . 👍

When I bought my replacement shocks for my GoldStar from Tec i had to give them my not inconsiderable weight and they were produced according. Suspension settings have always been a mystery to me and i put them on position 3 but have yo say that's pure guess work.

Hi Ian, yes I believe they tailor the shocks to your weight.
I didn't, I have now adjusted my " new" ones, taken them up a notch and they are better still
It has been a successful upgrade.
The only thing I want to do now is bring the bars up and back a bit, easy done then I've finished🤔
      (I think)

Its very unfortunate that your T100 std factory suspension is not to your liking.....TRIUMPH are so on the money as a rule and from my layman idea of thing I dont like second guessing the manufacturer.
What exactly was the problem with the front and rear suspension on your Brand New Bike....did you not consider complain to triumph about it?
I have the 2020T100....bought it brand new......did a 70mile ride last night on it....and paid attention to is suspension after see both your vids.
As I said....had the bike from new......I am no expert but would say the suspension on my bike is great.....no bouncing on pot holes....no banging or rattling.
Never feel odd on the twistys.
I do all my own spanner work....and would urge you to have it looked at if its banging and clonking on the front end.
P.S. these rear springs/shocks being so much shorter than factory would also worry me.
So can you sat exactly what the prob was front and rear.

      Hi Thanks for commenting.
Triumph changed the suspension on the Mk 2 version. That came out in 2021.
That in itself is an admission they got it wrong on our model.(2016 -2021)
They fitted progressive front fork springs to the front.
That is what lots of people do as a relatively cheap upgrade that is instantly noticeable on our model.
It used to be a harsh ride, with the new springs in, it is much better, it soaks up small ripples and small bumps much better.
I found the rears to be pretty much the same, they are cheap budget shock absorbers, the Ikons ride better. When you hit a bump they are much smoother they don't crash and skip over them.
I know it's hard to describe because I am no expert.
Just following other more knowledgeable people's advice.
Having said all that, if you and happy with your standard set up then that is wonderful.
      Stick with it, that's perfect.
Ride safe and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

If it improves the ride it’s got to be worth it in my eyes unless they were a astronomical price and he done the right thing letting them take the bikes for the sake of his wife and children in less he’s a tuff nut but three is a lot to take on at once I done martial arts and we were taught for our black belt to be able to take three on it can be done but it’s bldy hard and you don’t come out of it without taking a few I can tell ya

Hi Keith, I think it's worth having a play about with the bike, to me it's part of the enjoyment, I'm always messing, swapping stuff, you've still got originals when you sell it on. Glad they've improved the ride. Absolute scum to threaten someone's family, for whatever the reason. Ride sare mate 👍
