The best utlization for this is for disabled kids who are literally unable to go out of their homes on a daily basis. They will be able to interact with other kids in ways they can't normally. It has the potential to create a really cool community for these kids. It also can enable them to experience things that they never could before.

Coming from a perspective of a covid high school graduate, two years of virtual school (zoom) has had tremendouesly impacted my ability to communicate and interact with others. I understand this is a big step in the advancement of future, and the concept is cool. The amount of social anxiety developed (me and people I know) just based from having two years of zoom calls, I can't imagine how much adjusting it would take or need for a metaverse student to be comfortable in the current world we live in. Especially given that this program is being provided in a country thats already so very conservative. It can be a good thing, but I can't lie when I say this makes me nervous for our younger generations.

100%. Pre-Covid my communication skills were great in terms of being able to speak clearly and fluidly. Yet I remember the first semester going back to campus and talking with a counselor that I was able to think well thought out sentences that wouldnt translate into audible words. Luckily as an extrovert I forced myself to talk with as much people as possible and now can speak clearly as I did years ago but I cant imagine how frustrating for others it could be not being able to speak what you want to say.

As someone who goes to a correspondence/online school due to chronic illness, which has no way to interact with the other students. This sounds much better because you get your education without having the downside of normal correspondence school of being alone accept with interactions with your teacher. If you can do it more in the way of looking at your screen in bed then it would be so great for people with chronic illness, long term illness and disabilities which has not choice but to do school online, it would really bring down the barriers and issue which can happen with physical education.
Yes there still could be issues with social development but for people who can’t go to school because of mental or physical illness this is much better than the normal alternative of dropping out or a online school which has no interaction at all. I hope we see things like this more so people like me aren’t locked out of the normal teenage experience just because we got unlucky.

    • @Nothereforit174
      @Nothereforit174 Před 4 měsíci +8

There’s this idea about disability that we all have extreme limitations. If you can’t walk, you should be accommodated in society instead of isolated in your homes for mental health problems to grow. We don’t need social interaction any less than others do to be healthy. That means the cities should look into development of programs to help transport people from their homes and have wheelchair accessibility become a norm in public building by offering money to those that comply(typical political strategy). Define limitations because barring extreme conditions like agoraphobia or something similar, it’s not recommended to encourage people to let themselves be limited by conditions that cause social anxiety or social anxiety itself. That’s because the brain worsens those issues to the point of debilitation beyond where many start if they don’t have support to learn coping techniques. They’re just likely to become more socially awkward to the point where even tasks like phone calls or doctors appointments will become insurmountable and depression that can alter their chemical makeup will most likely develop. I say this as someone with social anxiety. I’m educated on it but I also know firsthand that the research available pans out. If I get too comfortable with avoidance, I’m more prone to distress when I have to leave my house because I will at some point. I’m happier and more independent when I practice being engaged. I see a therapist to learn tools to lessen affects of anxiety if not totally alleviate them at times when I’m out. That should we what people want for someone like me. Not to see us become shut ins because it’s easier than working with us or challenging us. Everyone is supposed to be challenged in some way as part of maturity. Even people considered low intellect(for lack of better phrasing) who may not be able to communicate verbally or act in less traditional ways, need exposure to sunshine and have better outcomes when they are integrated into society. I’m sure there’s people who absolutely can’t of course, but then they need (and likely already have) programs targeted at their unique life. It shouldn’t become a norm for anyone else with challenges to just be left in the home and not learn independence which largely benefits people who are able bodied more than us. No one wants to invest in wheelchair accessible cities if they can bypass it and just make those people become shut ins by selling it as a positive accommodation without mentioning the long term effects. People don’t want to see me stimming because they think behavior is one way to be valid so it’s easier to just ask me to stay home so they don’t have to see break their norms by using fidget products during meetings or boldly listen to quiet background noise in my earphone to stay focused during a lecture because they think that’s offensive to authority when really it’s keeping me still and engaged. I say embrace everyone instead of creating reasons for us to see each other less

as someone that uses VR really often (i refuse to call it "metaverse") i can see the problem people would have with it, but i honestly thinks that it isn't as bad as it might seems.
Don't think of VR as the future. Think of it like a gaming console, or a social media app.
I participate in a "famous" group in VRChat and i know it might not seem possible to think this, but... most people aren't actually weird. Most of the people i met were actually pretty nice and sociable, which makes me think that people aren't actually going to stop talking with each other.
My point is: it's still hard to build a full opinion on this, since the technology is pretty new. At my point of view it will be good to have high schools in VR, but the people need to have a more open mind and i honesly think that the more in depth you go into the "metaverse" (i know i said that i wouldn't use this shit term) the more "magical" it will be.

As a professor who had to teach what they called "hybrid classes" during the pandemic, having a situation in which a bunch of students are at home, under zero control, just does not work. Not only it causes a lot of stress to professors, because you have to focus on the students in the classroom and those online, which causes LOTS of stress (our brains are not ready for it, and even less if you're 40), but there's no way of making sure the students at home are taking the classes seriously. At some places I worked, the policy was "students need to keep their camera on". They'd still spend the class watching tv or anime or reading manga. In other places, it was "no camera, as we want to preserve privacy", which meant they'd show up for roll call, only to ignore the rest of the class or go watch tv, and then excuse themselves with "I was in the loo" when called out for not answering.
At the colleges I teach, in those departments where students were majoring what I teach, there has been a significant drop of proficiency compared to years prior for the students who had to take online lessons and they themselves admit it. Mind you, they were victims of a system that was the best that could be cobbled together due to the circumstances, as life and lessons had to go on despite of the restrictions, but either everyone is online, and by everyone I mean EVERYONE, and we professors would risk being replaced by an AI, let's be real here, or everyone is in the classroom.

    • @faenethlorhalien

All of my 4th year students who are graduating this year told me the same: they started their degree taking regular classes, then the pandemic hit, and during those 2 - 2 and a half years of restrictions and full or partial online classes and restrictions to club activities, they really missed the human element, being able to interact with people of their generation and that's the only thing they regret from their experience. They also see positives of the pandemic, though: during job-hunting, most companies now carry out most interviews and seminars online, with only the very last 1 (or 2 at max) interviews, when you sign the contract, requiring you to go to the main office in Tokyo or Osaka.

Not really. Having a space to actually move around in makes a huge difference in vr chat (vr chat is what I'm familiar with so everything will be from that perspective but its also vr) for example. There's a huge difference between being in a discord call or something similar and being in a vr chat world. The main thing being how audio works is distance based. If someone is farther away they're quieter and if they're closer they're louder this replicates a real world room a lot better, multiple people can have a conversation at once without talking over everyone in the room or having pre-planned groups split off where no one else can hear you at all for group work. Earmuff mode allows you to lower the volume of those outside a certain range which is also great for that. Within vr chat you can have a lot more human interactions and meet people than in something like teams or whatever (I myself have a friend group that I made in vr chat and we're all planning on meeting up irl in June). This is assuming of course that there are breaks and that you can hang out after class or whatever. Now I will say I hate the "metaverse" and have no idea if it works similarly, but if it does than it'd be... ok I guess?

Body language, the ability to direct our speech and visible attention physically, and also eye-contact (soon to be common tech) is also huge in actually conveying ourselves better and allowing people to know when is a suitable time to enter a discussion, or let someone else speak. etc.

This is straight up due to being chronically online + COVID. Two years, and enough damage was done that you can put into comparable numbers. As someone who can game for 16 hours non stop, fully virtual schools is a terrible idea. It can be very beneficial under specific circumstances, but society still requires these social skills that you pick up through making friends, talking to teachers, and sadly, bullying and rejection.

I agree completely with your points. As someone who WAS bullied throughout elementary and high school (and has a learning disability). I can’t deny going to in person school is extremely important for social development.
The only benefit I see is for people who have physical disabilities. I saw a lot of comments mentioning this.
Or maybe for those who are to far from public schools. Or those whose areas have constant weather school cancellations?
But other than those situations I never see this being the future.

I think its important for kids in school or even adults in the world to reach out and talk to those who see someone alone/lonely. So...I was homeschooled for all my highschool and the moment that I switched to college I had multiple anxiety attacks and my social anxiety only got worse. I'm slowly working my way to being better in groups outside of plays and other acting things I do but that's different cause I can play a part there. If this kinda thing was around when I was younger, I would've probably gotten better at interacting with so many people and maybe even developed tools to lessen the chances of anxiety attacks that would happen sometimes multiple times a week at college. I get that it's different from seeing others face to face but it could definitely act as a buffer that can help those that have issues and is totally something I wish was there when I was younger. Still, there is no good without bad. It's kinda cool that it's happening though.

I think it's a really cool idea outside of it being attached to "meta" or whatever. As a trans woman having vr chat around helped a lot with gender dysphoria; it's a place where I've been able to voice train and see my results pay off well before HRT has really done much to my appearance. It's also helped a lot with my social anxiety given that the whole point of vr chat is to well *talk* to people it's sort of been like exposure therapy. Now it's not a perfect one to one; talking to people irl is still harder since I have autism and eye contact still freaks me out, but it's not as hard as it used to be. The culture on vr chat is also a little different since it's a lot more acceptable to just walk up and start talking with a random group of people or even just listen quietly for awhile in vr chat than it would be irl. Some things also depend on how the school would be run. Would there be breaks where students can talk to each other? Or would it just be only classes 100% of the time with no time for socializing? If it's the later I don't think it'd be a great idea.

  • @Hunterchuck

“Fun” fact about VR that everyone who gets sick from it does wrong:
Do not play VR games for hours in one sitting if you get easily sick from it. You need to train yourself to get “VR legs” first (like sea legs).
Play a VR game for 10 minutes EVERY day, but if you get ANY kind of uneasy feeling within those 10 minutes, immediately stop and try again the next day. Lower it to 5 minutes a day if you have to. After a successful month double it to 20 minutes a day, but lower it to 10 minutes if that's too long. Then after a successful month double the playtime again. If you can successfully lengthen your playtime for a year then, CONGRATULATIONS, you successfully have gotten VR legs and you can comfortably play VR games for as long as you want!

Would it be required to enroll by physically going to the school?
What would happen if the VR headset is not working properly?
Do they get one for free?
Do they still go to class, but just audio with a PNG while they wait for a replacement/or wait for the headset to get fixed?
What if the software they're using is malfunctioning and had to be fixed?
Do they get an off-day until it's ok again?

There are a couple different points that I think this could go bad.
    1. its a part of the "Metaverse" which as I understand is owned by a corporation, if it was its own independent thing or open source then I would be more on board with it. Stay away from me Zucc!
    2. if its just going to be teaching the same material as in normal schools, then they haven't fixed the problem that most school material is focused on general facts and skills, and not on more practical things. Like how to do your finances, how to cook a meal for yourself, how to fix things for yourself, what are your legal and human rights, how does your government work, things like that.
Good points that could come about from this.
    1. depending on how it works this could mean they actually spend less time in school. if its similar to homeschooling, then you could finish things at your own pace or even ahead of schedule and spend the rest of your time pursuing a passion, earning money, or just relaxing.
    2. this means more people will have headsets and can explore the different games and experiences that VR has to offer.

And I was a person that was very much against homeschooling for the same reason; but in recent years due to the lack of education standards, education fund, and the new revisionist history attempts, alternative school methods are getting more merit.

Whether your experience is bad or good, it’s that experience that make you today; however, with the lack of engagement in communities and environments and human interactions what would happen in the future. We will also work in metaverse too? No more ‘go to the office then work ot then go to party when the job is done’? Maybe having it be hybrid would be a good idea. Something like 3 days in person, 2 days in VR per week or similar. I was one of those people that didn't live near their highschool, as my local "home" school wasn't great so I searched elsewhere. It wasn't that far physically, but because of Miami traffic, it would take at least 20 minutes, if not 30 to get to school. Combine that with a start time of 7:20am, and I was waking up at unholy hours to get ready for school. If every other school day was in VR, there would at least be some relief from that. Not to mention for parents. Since my school wasn't my local, buses did not come to take me to that school, it literally wasn't an option. My parents had no choice but to wake up at that time as well to take me.
Having it be hybrid would give students the social aspect, while also giving them more relaxed stay at home days when they can sleep/rest better and have more time for themselves after school.

    • @Nothereforit174
      @Nothereforit174 Před 4 měsíci

I don’t know that students need even more down time, they’ve been getting that and reduced curriculum in the States and all we’re seeing is testing scores and literacy drop. I’m not against changing the hours slightly that they spend in school perhaps or offering more vacations. In my area summer was three months when my mother attended school, it’s been less than two and a half my entire life and a little shorter each year. Maybe they need to stop holding high schoolers an hour later when teens are in need of more sleep to develop healthily. Things like that make sense but letting them be encouraged to see education as an interruption to their chill time and something to invest bare minimum time in is how ignorant citizens are raised up. To your point about getting up in the morning...Parents need to start teaching their children to keep a nighttime routine and reasonable hours past elementary school. It’s not an early start to be up before seven. That’s normal for most working people even without kids because the work day often starts at 8 these days. That being said, I do remember knowing we weren’t considered late until five minutes past eight up but having teachers deduct points if we didn’t make it our desks by 7:45 so I think school should start at 8 and mean that. No one is guaranteed an easy time getting to school or anywhere really so it’s unfortunate in heavy traffic filled places but they’re gonna have to learn to wake up anyway and be used to accomplishing tasks in less than ideal situations.
Plus if VR is gonna be another relaxed day then there’s no point in even having school those days. Students will just put off the work until it’s due and not learn the content which seems to be the observed norm, they tread education as a checklist of inconvenience for a grade. School makes them be more present mentally an allows a teacher to facilitate active learning to help information stick. As for parents getting up early, well they had children and shouldn’t expect them to just exist at home. VR students engage less with other students so their social skills suffer and they normalize not being an active member of their community. What do they reasonably need to be chilling for constantly? Go join a sports club or a volunteer club. They should learn to be part of something greater than themselves. It was never the students who wanted to go home and chill that went far after graduating. They have no skills or anything they’re invest in to go after. Their grades are never excelling and even if they’re decent enough, that’s so normal that without adding participation in something, universities don’t care. They look for students who are going to add something unique to their class or innovative minds. Our minds are not meant to be scrolling or taking in content passively constantly. They’ll limit their own neurodevelopment at crucial points. City infrastructures need to change but we can’t give up on kids in the meantime. It’s scary to me how different younger gen z is from my half. They don’t know how to collect credible information and they are shallow with self obsessed tendencies that render them incapable of taking in criticism or even evaluating it. They don’t have ambition and their favorite reading material is erotica that often features abuse. For zoomers like me education was still promoted heavily and reading was a norm. Our books make us think about society and human nature even if they were romantic. Plus YA books could mention sex without being gratuitous and showing healthy dynamics or not glorifying the ones that were bad. We had to think. Now they read sex fantasies by middle aged men and women who sometimes write characters as seventeen to avoid competition in the adult industry and feed off the large audience for YA. It’s a whole thing. And with Japan already being a heavy patriarchy where girls are left behind in education easier and more likely to fall into poverty that precedes sex work, I don’t think children need even less oversight there with girls subsequently being taught to value education less. They’re already heavily targeted by av scouts as teens since the legal age dropped. Educational institutions need to start focusing on being a place to bring up anyone, against the odds even, and that means hard work and time investment on all sides. I can’t speak for their funding but instead of sending kids home to save money, I’d like to see our politicians worry about making sure it’s not just privileged students with expansive libraries, up to date textbooks not falling apart from age, and college entrance exam prep. My high school had the bad end because we were the side with all the Black families like my own in majority. I wanted to be able to take physics like the white kids across town and have a building that was accessible for my walking condition(only they had wheelchair accessibility and working elevators, our students had to walk up two flights of stairs or more with crutches and mobility impairment). Admittedly when I could finally dual enroll it helped me control my time better but also made me want to come to school less. Perhaps students could benefit from taking classes in rotation instead of being forced to do seven periods. If there’s a mandatory extracurricular I wouldn’t hate that. Engagement and still less continuous class time daily to avoid burnout. Sorry for the long comment lol, hard to capture all these thoughts in bite sizes but I’ve done VR and had family who did it so I know where it’s pitfalls for teens, even worse if they’re neurodiverse like me. ADHD sucks with hybrid. Teens already do better with interactive lessons involving people but many flat out can’t do work well without them. Reading Shakespearean a class with roles was much more beneficial for my retention than the year a teacher had us read it largely at home and then just test on it
