A tutorial on using free VST plugins to achieve a 'smooth' sounding metal lead guitar tone in your recordings.
Both songs heard in the video are from my band, if you like what you hear buy us a beer! (Granted I'm not legal drinking age, don't worry I'm saving them up).

Here's a quick fix if you are getting lots of noise on your guitar track after applying the plugins:
Turn the gain down a bit on the TSE808/Nick Crow 8505 or try throwing a noise gate before or after the TSE808. We boosted the gain a ton so if your playing is the slightest bit sloppy or your guitar pick-ups have a low output you can get a really awful noise with it. Generally this setup doesn't work too well for live monitoring unless you turn the gain down.

A lot of people have a ton of noise using this setup. Here are a few tips to keep your tone sounding silky smooth:
    - Turn down the gain on the TSE808/Nick Crow 8505, or disable TSE808.
    - Add a noise gate plugin before or after the TSE808 in the signal chain.
    - This isn't the best setup for live monitoring, it works best on already recorded and edited guitar leads.
    - Make sure your playing is super tight.
    - Make sure you're optimizing your signal to noise ratio! Record through a dedicated interface with proper gain staging, make sure your guitar isn't picking up interference.
    - If you're plugging into the microphone input on your computer, it will sound like shit.
Thanks for all of the feedback folks!

What an amazing tone... I eliminated ALL noise with two extra plugins built into reaper. At the very beginning of the FX chain I put ReaFir (on subtract mode) and then Reagate to remove just a tiny bit of leftover noise. Thought it would be impossible to get a good clean sound in real time with this fx chain, but those two extra plugins did it!
    Thanks Zach!

Dude! Thanks for posting this, but you fail to mention something very important. After following your every step and setting, you don't explain why the hiss and noise from the 8505 is SO FREAKING LOUD, IT'S LOUDER THAN THE DAMN GUITAR SIGNAL!!!!!! No mention of this at all. I think that would be important. IF this is what the pros sound like, i'm switching to Ukulele

Haha, I forgot to mention that this can be an issue since there is so much gain happening. Compiled a quick list of tips to try out, see if these help at all:
      - Turn down the gain on the TSE808/Nick Crow 8505, or disable TSE808.
      - Add a noise gate plugin before or after the TSE808 in the signal chain.
      - This isn't the best setup for live monitoring, it works best on already recorded and edited guitar leads.
      - Make sure your playing is super tight.
      - Make sure you're optimizing your signal to noise ratio! Record through a dedicated interface with proper gain staging, make sure your guitar isn't picking up interference.
      - If you're plugging into the microphone input on your computer, it will sound like shit.

Maybe you should clarify that this is an ironic video! Reading the comments it seems that some newbies really tried out these settings and wondered why it sounds horrible! For you guys out there: Keep the TS Drive at Zero. Only max out the Level knob. On the Amp you keep the gain rather low for more clarity. And don't roll down the mids. Don't use delays, double-track, pan channels left and right.

Make sure you're using the AU format of the plugin, I think I included different plugin formats in the download such as VST, AU, etc. You will know if it's in AU format by the extension, which should be a .component file, and should be placed in the Library/audio/plugins/components directory on your computer.
LePou LeCab is windows only unfortunately. However there is another free impulse response loader you can use as a substitute for Mac called NadIR from Ignite Amps.
