A tutorial on using free VST plugins to achieve a 'smooth' sounding metal lead guitar tone in your recordings.
Both songs heard in the video are from my band, if you like what you hear buy us a beer! (Granted I'm not legal drinking age, don't worry I'm saving them up).

Here's a quick fix if you are getting lots of noise on your guitar track after applying the plugins:
Turn the gain down a bit on the TSE808/Nick Crow 8505 or try throwing a noise gate before or after the TSE808. We boosted the gain a ton so if your playing is the slightest bit sloppy or your guitar pick-ups have a low output you can get a really awful noise with it. Generally this setup doesn't work too well for live monitoring unless you turn the gain down.

A lot of people have a ton of noise using this setup. Here are a few tips to keep your tone sounding silky smooth:
- Turn down the gain on the TSE808/Nick Crow 8505, or disable TSE808.
- Add a noise gate plugin before or after the TSE808 in the signal chain.
- This isn't the best setup for live monitoring, it works best on already recorded and edited guitar leads.
- Make sure your playing is super tight.
- Make sure you're optimizing your signal to noise ratio! Record through a dedicated interface with proper gain staging, make sure your guitar isn't picking up interference.
- If you're plugging into the microphone input on your computer, it will sound like shit.
Thanks for all of the feedback folks!
+Zachary Spence somehow came across with your video again (1-st time was 1.5 year ago). damn, the moment when you set TS808 is incredible)
I don`t think it`s shitty, more like comic
Zachary Spence Yeah um... play far away from the computer, or at a 90 degree angle from it and as far as you can.
What an amazing tone... I eliminated ALL noise with two extra plugins built into reaper. At the very beginning of the FX chain I put ReaFir (on subtract mode) and then Reagate to remove just a tiny bit of leftover noise. Thought it would be impossible to get a good clean sound in real time with this fx chain, but those two extra plugins did it!
Thanks Zach!
+Sean Palmeter Awesome man, glad this worked out for you! Reaper users take note ;)
+Sean Palmeter Every time I use the subtract mode on ReaFir my sound turns into some robotic sounding beeps... Kind of a noob at this stuff, any tips on how to use the subtract correctly?
What did you use for delay? :)
Man i think it's so great how you make a package for everything in your tutorials, rather than having like 5 links in your description you go to the effort of putting it into one file. Cheers so much !
0:36 porn folder is real
lol
hahahahhahahahahahhahah LOL
Hahaha BUSTED! :D
Nicely spotted!
XD very nice
you always make things simple, i love it, keep it up man
If nothing else, that was the most amazingly badass entertaining video I've seen all week!
omg you are a life saver, im using a dimarzio super distortion so i was getting alot of background noise until i turned down some of the gain on the 8505 now its sounds beautiful! gotta love free stuff :D thanks dude!
Thanks for this, I nearly freaked out, not even the noise gate could block out the bg noise, well, it could but the threshold was so high it wasnt opening the gate when i played a note haha
Awesome video man! Love the humor!
your tutorials out of this world
hey dude ! i'm a big fan of your vids and tutorials,it's very useful and often helpin me with guitars recordin at home ! a big thanx to you and catch lefty brofist ))

You're great man thank you !
great tuts man!
This helped me a lot! Thanks man!
I love you man you make my everyday till your last video!
MAXIMUM ! Thanks dude!
These are great, I followed the steps for the metal-rhytm you have put up and it´s working very well for me :) Hmm, I´m looking for a good solo-sound, I allready have the Poulin Lecab from the other package, but I will try and download this as well, thanks a lot for these videos :)
The bass at the end touched my soul
ZACK YOU ARE THE BEST MAN!
I FUCKING LOVE YOU!
These work great in FL studio, the TSE808 thing makes it sound terrible though, I took that out and it sounds great. For a noise gate I had to load up pod farm, very tight gate but I'm sure there are other free gate vsts you can get that would work just as good.
Bro thank you so much for these videos they are helping me a lot with my guitar tone.
beginning solo is gorgeous
Sounds great dude, thanks!
That rhythm sound! Amazing! Could you please post a tutorial for that? It sounds so freakin' awesome!
Great video man!
this was both helpful and hilarious XD thank you
Nice song in the intro. Great instructional vid as well!

Your videos are fun to watch. Hoping you'll do a bass tutorial soon, there aren't any good ones on the CZcams.
Sick editing!

Soo good brother! :)
this shit seems so beyond ridiculous lmao cant really argue with those results though
Thanks man! your videos are really helpfull!
thanks. I'll look into that
you re my savior dude... thanks alot
awesome vid
MAXIMUM , MAXIMUM , MAXIMUM!!!!
Thank You!
Fuark brah, EQ mixing of the Gods
More like getting a terrible tone... Put the amp on a crunch setting, keep the mids up around 8, bass at 7, treble at 8. Keep the gain around 7, put in an Ibanez tube screamer, and you're good to go.
The song starting at 2:12 kinda sounds like protoman by emmure. In other words badass song man and great vid! Thanks for the help too.
Thank you!!
That rhythm tone.
I love you. Seriously
Hi, Do you know where and if i could find anywhere the "built in" SoloC Impulse of the LeCab ? and what was that exact second darker impulse please ?
Im the suscriber number 10,000 !! :D
+davidgarcia15rb oh yeah!! Thanks!
Such an awesome video.

Okay I was really talking about the editing and layout of the video itself, not the tone he made.
I used this setup (minus the T808) with the Ignite amps Emissary (freeware) in place of the 8505 and got a tone pretty close to this. My digital delay wasn't that great, but it was good.
nice vocal tone. nice work..hahaha
super duper video! thanks a lot!! btw entertaining, too \m/
I'm more interested in how you got that tone for your rhythm guitars, I watched your other video. Which the tones are good, but the tone you have on the rhythm in this video is killer! What adjustments did you make to get that sound, compare to your older video?
Hey man, totally like the sound, what stereo delay do you recommend for that job as I`m not in Cubase?
Studio One 2 doesn't load some plugins :'c
You re a fucking genius man thank you, great TONE
Nice!!!!, hey how do you set the drums to get that tone?... would you show us in a video tutorial? thank you lml
i want that song!!
Hey man, this sounds awesome, But im wondering, do you have to record a guitar track then add these effects or is it live play?
Zachary Spence -Will this work w/ Logic X?
Thanks a lot Dude! ^^
damn bro, you're GOOD .. fucking GOOD and KIND .. thanks alot
That was amazing, the ending was real and makes me cri evertim
many years, and this continues making me laugh. SHSJHSDHJS XDDD
do u have a video for the other guitars the more bassy ones
maximium maaxximum maaaaxiiiimmuummmm!!
KMSCovers i died laughing at that
so did i! i shit you not, i had to repeat that at least more then 20 times to get it out of my system xD
I need the name of the song played at the beginning please. It was freaking awesome!
Kudos for actually being genuinely funny
Dude! Thanks for posting this, but you fail to mention something very important. After following your every step and setting, you don't explain why the hiss and noise from the 8505 is SO FREAKING LOUD, IT'S LOUDER THAN THE DAMN GUITAR SIGNAL!!!!!! No mention of this at all. I think that would be important. IF this is what the pros sound like, i'm switching to Ukulele
+Dustin MidNyte Driscoll
Haha, I forgot to mention that this can be an issue since there is so much gain happening. Compiled a quick list of tips to try out, see if these help at all:
- Turn down the gain on the TSE808/Nick Crow 8505, or disable TSE808.
- Add a noise gate plugin before or after the TSE808 in the signal chain.
- This isn't the best setup for live monitoring, it works best on already recorded and edited guitar leads.
- Make sure your playing is super tight.
- Make sure you're optimizing your signal to noise ratio! Record through a dedicated interface with proper gain staging, make sure your guitar isn't picking up interference.
- If you're plugging into the microphone input on your computer, it will sound like shit.
ahahaha hahahah helpful and fun
ny!!!! GJ my man.
How did you make a clean distortion
Oh wow, i have no words
What about the tone of that rhythm guitar? Let me see how it sounds!
Could I use all that software and use it to record in GarageBand?
lmfao this is awesome. Thank you !
Great tone! But, what did you do with bass?
Hellow, nice video. Where can I find those impulses?
Do you know how to get this tone on an actual amp and pedal? I have The marshall jackhammer and fender blues junior, I also have analog delay. Any tips for how to get this tone, it sounds awesome.
Show us your recoding tips
I got the plugins to work finally, did you use a c-7 on this?
Where can I find some more great amp sims and impulse responses like these? I use Logic Pro X, so .component (AU) files would be great! Thanks!!!
Maybe you should clarify that this is an ironic video! Reading the comments it seems that some newbies really tried out these settings and wondered why it sounds horrible! For you guys out there: Keep the TS Drive at Zero. Only max out the Level knob. On the Amp you keep the gain rather low for more clarity. And don't roll down the mids. Don't use delays, double-track, pan channels left and right.
I use Tracktion 5 as DAW and when I try to open Lecab it says that it failed to load currenctly... please help
What song is the beginning solo in?
Cuz I never got this much result from amp sim though im using guitar rig5
do you go straight to your interface
pls let me know
wow, can i use it on Logic?
Which câmera and lens u use?
This sounds so cool!! I'm using Logic Pro x and I can't get any of the plugins into it, any ideas? Thanks.
Also I was wondering what guitar you are using?
Make sure you're using the AU format of the plugin, I think I included different plugin formats in the download such as VST, AU, etc. You will know if it's in AU format by the extension, which should be a .component file, and should be placed in the Library/audio/plugins/components directory on your computer.
LePou LeCab is windows only unfortunately. However there is another free impulse response loader you can use as a substitute for Mac called NadIR from Ignite Amps.
Zachary Spence ok, thanks a lot. I'll try again and keep my fingers crossed
hi, i have logic pro x, can this work for that?
hey zachary, thanks for the video! one question, i did everything you did in the video but i get background noise and i dont know how to take it off, its like that dirt when your amp is at a high volume. If you could help me with that, it would be awesome, thanks!
try disabling TSE808 and running a noise gate in the plugin chain before the amp
what audio interface did you use here? :O
What audio interface are you using? Zachary Spence Also, how do you monitor your guitars with zero latency and get rid of the "regular" di sound?
tube screamer at all max settings? first time i see that
Hi, interesting video but just to be sure about one thing : do the original record needs to be recorded with clean guitar and AFTER I have to add all the pluging you show in the video, or I can record directly with my own tones and put the plugins in addition ?
Great- all these plugins are free?
Hi Zachary, does the plug in works with pro tools?
Hello dude! Very nice sound.
What audio interface do you use?
Hey man, I am using an RME Babyface
Dude where to is this bass tutorial?
