  • BRITISH RAILWAYS IN THE 1980's
Twyford Station on 27th January 1985
Continuing with my archive of video recording between the years of 1986 to 2001 this clip is of Twyford taken on 27/01/1985. This was an experimental filming exercise I made with a broadcast 3 piece camera and was my first railway outing. It has had to come under some heavy re mastering as the video colours were way out and the equipment proved too heavy to hand hold so was abandoned for a year until I replaced it with my ever reliable Philips VKR model of slighter build. Note how the Mainlines are shut on this occasion, due to engineering work. I hope the video takes you back to this period with fond memories. Feel free to comment, good or bad, all comments are read and greatly appreciated, but it is not always possible to answer each individually. Sit back and enjoy this latest production remembering all those now long gone Locomotive classes and other types of traction. Many thanks for all subscriptions and all of those viewers who have kindly shown an interest in my material.

Amazing how nostalgic you can get for things as mundane as a 1st generation DMU. Great video and sounds!

So many memories for me with your video. From 1969 to 1972 me and my Dad would park in this exact spot in his works bright yellow Mini Van and watch Western after Western thunder past and Hymeks on the commuters. When this was videoed I was working in Reading at Yellow Pages and would drive home to Winnersh via Twyford car park and watch 50s 47s 37s new Yeoman 59s and my best friend drove a Skoda Estelle (is that yours in video) within a year I’d bought a Triumph Stag and in 1990 a Jag XJS happy days. Now I have a model layout of Twyford so thanks for the clip of the old Station hotel and Church, but living down in Devizes Wilts

Stunning footage. I was at the other end of the Western back then, and it brings back some absolutely amazing memories. A day trip to London to visit family was always taken by train, as it was cheaper. Spending hours at Paddington, copping all that was there. Outstanding work. Thanks for sharing it.

i grew up in Twyford and stood in that spot from around 63 to 70 , would help the staff on the station load the mail and parcels onto the trains , last day of steam and the stopping express trains in the evenings , great to see again

Thank you. I lived in Twyford in the 2000s, and it's great to see how it was during this video.

January 1985 was about 18 months before the launch of Network South East. This is a good reminder of how dirty and run down the trains around London looked in the early 80s (not helped by the dreary January weather here). I've hazy childhood memories of it but certainly reaffirmed here. NSE worked absolute miracles just by sprucing up the stations with red paint and painting the trains in a gaudy new livery. For a few heady years the railway in the south east really seemed to come alive again, before bumping back to earth in the 90s recession ahead of privatisation. And, sorry I always say this on your vintage videos, check out the complete absence of passengers (yes I know it was Sunday but still...). The 80s really was a different world.

Some nice memories there, lived by Sonning cutting back then. About 5 years ago visited Twyford station to take a few pictures of the stone trains ,my friend and I where told by the lady station manager that we had to get written permission. ?!! Funny world we live in.

London & south east England can now be pretty hostile for taking pictures etc on stations, what you were told was frankly a load of balls, but sadly quite a common story now, especially more obscure locations like this. If you stick to where there are still plenty of other enthusiasts like Reading or Peterborough the staff seem to tolerate it better and it isn't such a problem. Since the terrorism threat receded a bit it now seems to be an obsession that anyone standing at the end of a platform is an unacceptable suicide risk

Considering how bulky the equipment 📹 must have been, and that it must have been fairly nippy⛄, that's very good results. Sound quality in particular is excellent. Particularly the snarl of the DMUs. Everything seemed to be on the relief lines; engineering work on the mains?
