Measuring Wet and Dry Ingredients | Basic Kitchen Skills

  • Taking your recipes to the next level requires measuring wet and dry ingredients accurately, especially for baking. The tools and procedures for measuring dry ingredients are completely different from measuring wet (liquid) ingredients.
Though they both have the same name, there is a difference between ounces, which measures weight and fluid ounces which measures volume. 8 fluid ounces is a cup, but 8 fluid ounces volume doesn't weigh 8 ounces in weight. A pound of flour has more volume then a pound of sugar. This is why modern recipes are moving toward weighing ingredients on a scale. Weighing ingredients always makes it a snap for converting recipes in metric grams to ounces or going from ounces to grams.

Does a cup or 8 ounces of water weigh 8 ounces? No it doesn't and that is the basis for accurate tools to measure wet and dry ingredients. Though they both have the same name, there is a difference between ounces, which measures weight and fluid ounces which measures volume. How do you handle them?

When possible I go for weighing with a digital scale, especially since for LCTV we give our recipes in both ounces (imperial) and grams (metric). 🍸🍸

It is not like we have not tried and the main purpose of the channel is to teach beginners, but to expose us to the world of shows as a host and personality. 🍸🍸

Just use grams and never deal with this issue ever again.
Cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, quarts, pints… it’s all stupid.
Grams is sooo much easier and sooo much more precise.
Some recipes call for 39 grams of salt, and that’s more precise than “1 cup and a third of a cup”

I agree and I use weight for everything, that being said, a significant part of our audience is in North America which still uses imperial measurement instead of metric.
