Choosing trekking shoes is always a worry for trekkers. It's a big investment and you want to make it right. But many wonder if they can make do with sports shoes on their treks. So in this video, we look for the major differences between a trekking shoe and a sports shoe.
This was shot at Decathlon with their Quechua Trek 100 shoes and their Kalenji running shoes. By the end of the video, you'll know which shoe to choose, whether you're going on a Himalayan trek or a trek in the Western Ghats.
There are 4 points to look into when you are comparing trekking shoes and sports shoes.
    1. Grip on the sole
    2. Ankle support
    3. Hardness of the sole
    4. Water resistance

Marvellous job on the audio and visual quality in producing this, one comment I’d make is that while your comments are valid on the sort of hiking shoes one should wear while trekking for days on end, it comes back to the wearer’s preference because I hiked the Kokoda trek for about 8 days and wore Reeboks which lasted me the entire journey and I’m very thankful that I did not get any serious injuries.

Hi Swati, besides the Trek 100, which have the greatest protection against water while trek, are the other shoes available at Decathlon for trekking that aren't as protective against water, as good? There are two other style of shoe's (if my memory is correct) that are made of other fabric then that of Trek 100. Would be great if you did a video on those other shoes in comparison to the Trek 100 if there are differences that are significant

Hi Hari. You may buy any trekking shoes just make sure that they are high ankle. As high ankle support shoes helps you to trek better.

Ma'am you are right there are different shoes for different purpose.. But if I want to know whether trekking shoes can be used for different purpose.. It's all about our single earning money to invest... Trekking shoes cannot be used as running shoes.. But running shoes can be used as trekking shoes its all about ur will power...

Hiking boots absorb more shock from the sole, as well as support the ankle. However, running shoes can also be used, and if one uses inserts (extra inner soles), and thick socks, that can help cushion shocks to some extent. I have even used folded cardboard inside the running shoes. Feet will get more tired though, especially on rocky descents.

If you're going in October / November, you don't really need trekking shoes. Just make sure your sports shoes are not worn out / wearing out. They need to be in good condition to manage the long hours of trekking.
