    I was a smoker for like 15 years and found screaming of all kinds to be easy as could be. Quit a 5 years ago and literally sounded like I was singing choir for 2 years because I couldn't figure out how to produce any sort of distortion at all. Finally was able to re-find a decent scream a few years ago and have been building back ever since. Honestly the way I used to sound makes you wanna smoke again. It was almost like I could hit any note without question and with any amount of distortion I wanted with ease 😂 This is a very good tutorial though. Once you get enough muscle memory going you'll be able to just push air through without question and hit all sorts of notes both high and low. It's impossible to explain but this did a good job at figuring out the first step.

    Important to note that the technique he is showcasing is a compressed FC scream. What he is doing is activating his false chords while tightening his larynx. This gives a more gurgly tone and uses less air. An open FC technique gives a more rumbly and louder sound but is less air efficient.

    • @alexanderbrando2104
      @alexanderbrando2104  Před rokem +6

      This exercise is the first step to mastering all the variations of fc screams. If we're talking specifically about the scream that I demonstrated in the video then you're right. This is the kind of mid screams that I like the most - compressed false chords + tight positioning of arytenoid cartilage. It's not only air efficient, but also quite loud. In any case it's necessary to understand, that acoustics, openness, the amount of air, ect. - it's all just adjustments and a matter of taste. The foundation is the same for every kind of false chord screams. I like this type of screams, but it doesn't mean that everybody else has to scream this way.

  • @edoardotrauzzi4336
    @edoardotrauzzi4336 Před rokem +106

    Hi man, first of all I would like to say that your scream sounds pretty good; so good job there👍🏻
    Your tutorial is surely effective, however there’s an issue. The way you show to activate the false cords implies a strong glottal attack, meaning that the vocal cords could possibly smash together violently while performing the “uhhh” (especially in those subjects without experience and without enough breath control, to whom this video is addressed to). An hard glottal attack could be detrimental over time and is not mandatory to activate the supraglottic structures since there are safer ways to do so. The key is to keep a low subglottal pressure (aka: using more air and keeping the larynx fairly open). There’s a pretty popular exercise called “exasperated sigh”, I’m sure you know it; is way safer and surely less traumatic on the vocal cords and the larynx in general, especially when dealing with newbies.
    When first starting out is suggested, in fact, to maintain a low level of constriction of the whole larynx. Controlled constriction is the key to add power to vocals but is a pretty advanced technique and it takes time to be developed properly.
    Another great way to activate (especially control) the supraglottic structures is tuvan throat singing.
    I suggest you to do another tutorial in the future with less traumatic ways to approach the extreme singing. Other than that that I appreciate your videos, keep up the good work👍🏻

    • @alexanderbrando2104
      @alexanderbrando2104  Před rokem +20

      Hi, thank you for the comment! The movement that I show in the video, as I said, is developed from holding of breath. If you do the exercise with that in mind, then false vocal folds take on the huge part pressure, and your vocal folds won't hurt. I learned drive myself this way and everything is ok to this day, I have students that went through the same path and they're all good too. The same principle applies to the majority of screams that I showed on this channel: as long as my muscles keep the pressure, my vocal folds are totally alright. My voice doesn't even feel fatigued after screaming for a long time If I use techniques that have a huge percentage of false chord distortion in the mix (my growls, for example).
      This particular exercise is not for activation, but for initial enhancing of false vocal folds. I covered the activation part in the later videos(check out playlist "how to start screaming"). In these videos I also told, that beginners should strive to master a stable throat singing, but this technique requires our muscles to be strong enough in the first place. The activation of false chords is potentially more dangerous than the enhancing, but with a strong muscle foundation it becomes way safer.
      Speaking of sighs, I have a video about this method on the channel. It's a way only to one kind of false chord distortion. It won't enhance your false vocal folds enough for maintaining a good drive/throat singing and subsequently for performing growls/screams with a tight sound and high pressure. On the other hand, people who start with the vibrations that require more physical strength are easily able to do all the airy sigh-based screams and growls.
      Thank you once again for the feedback!

      @lazarushatchette3978 Před rokem +1

      @@hedonist9249 so it's pretty much just relaxation of the vocal cords. Think a yawn, it's going to feel very open, and a sigh is a great example as well. Sometimes purposely doing a voice Crack can help because between the head voice and chest voice is the Crack which allows the false cords to activate if there's enough air pressure

    I've recently been learning to metal scream and I've realized that it is very similar to beatboxing.
    When I was younger, I used to love beatboxing and for my age I was actually very good at it and managed to "break" my voice in to allow for me to do techniques known as throat and vibration bass. This used a part of your voice to create a deep and powerful bass-like sound. At 1:34 in this video, just for a second this guy actually does throat bass. Throat bass isn't as deep in comparison to vibration bass, and I've noticed that if I'm trying to do medium or high pitched vocal fry, the part of my voice that I use to perform that bass is used, however if I want to perform a deep and gutteral sound, I use the part of my throat that is used for vibration bass, which is much deeper in the throat.
    It's interesting to me, two completely different genre's and styles of vocal usage that both use the same parts of the throat.
