How to scream: how long should beginners practice metal vocals when starting out?

  • If you think about approaching vocals like you would training any other skill or muscle, you know that practice makes progress. I recommend that beginners work on activating their desired distortion, either the false cord or fry distortion in short increments and get as many days of practice in as you can (remembering to schedule in the all important rest days).
    You’re training muscle memory and building connections between what your brain wants and your vocal cords and other tissues in the vocal tract that you don’t typically use in your day-to-day life. Repetition within reason is key 🔑
    Gradual progress can be hard to gauge so if you video your practices, you can look back and see how you’ve grown. Remember everyone is starting their vocal journey from a different place and there’s no right answer for how long it should take for you to be able to produce a full bodied scream.
    If you are interested in learning, our EVI Now program has 16 different methods of activation for your screams. We also share a bunch of those different methods across our socials and channel to make learning as accessible as possible. Looking forward to hearing all you future vocalists that are getting ready to dive into the world of vocal distortion and extreme vocals right now!

      Been screaming for awhile but am learning other vocal techniques. That time trying to get the sound in the first place definitely varies person to person. But at the same time being new at something else is somehow really helping me differentiate fry and false chord placement. All the practice is making me so much more familiar with my singing flaps

    👏 TAKE 👏 YOUR 👏 TIME. When you feel like giving up, do it. Take a break. It took me a couple years just to nail the grit, distortion and vocal shapes of screams let alone the scream itself. Howard from killswitch, singer of make them suffer, ect helped a lot to try and emulate highs and lows. I had lots of days where im like tf nope im done lol took a week off, came back to it and sounded better!

    Surprisingly I was never able to do regular false cords but when I tried to do those heavier deathcore/metal type vocals I was able to do it and it helped me do false cords better(all because I watched the Ben Duerr video love the content)

    I had few days without acid reflux and was able to get fry and false cords together with voice... and sound was like in Slipknot or in your song Labor of hate... Because of your lessons, they are amazing... I only need time to fight that acid reflux but lessons improved my singing a lot. David, you are the best teacher for extreme vocal.👍😎

    I started trying distortion stuff out about a year and a half ago, back then couldn't get any sound out of me. I've been trying and testing different techniques and sounds almost every day for over a year. Now for the past month I feel like my body has started to figure out what is supposed to happen. I've had so many moments when I've just wanted to give up, now I finally feel like I can actually learn to scream with lots of practice. Thank you so much for your content, always really helpful!

    😂 I’m a female bass singer. Basso profundo tbh. Yeah it’s weird. I had no idea until a vocal coach heard me singing to a Leonard Cohen song that was randomly playing from somewhere. I can do subharmonics, overtones vocal fry and sound like a 7 ft tall black man trapped in a skinny white chics body. I can sing perfectly (if u call it singing) to the HUs wolf totem. I am a vocal freak who has never had a vocal lesson in my life. I can NOT however make the guttural growl that you do SO beautifully. I can do all parts individually… But I cannot combine them together. It is making me crazy. I obsess over it insisting I must sound exactly like you. I’m not even close. You my friend have become my Muse.

    I'm definitely having a problem with volume currently and getting my vocal fries down. I used to scream years ago and I want to get back into it but my body is 100% treating it like a brand new experience. I could scream but I didn't always do it the right way, noticable by the scratchy throat afterwards but it did go away after a while. Trying to transition back into these kind of vocals and learn new ways of doing it is interesting to say the least

  • @AndreBigBoi
    @AndreBigBoi Před 8 měsíci

    Contrary to popular believe, real fry does not require vocal fry, infact, vocal fry when forced to a "scream" can be long term harmful.
    Basic anatomy: vocal fry is just your vocal cords clapping on one another, not dangerous at all, however, when forced, that movement becomes faster and your vocal cords do now kinda just "punch" each other.
    Not to mentione that Will Ramos' throat literaly twists due to that, if onw didn't already know, it's NOT suposed to do that.
    The message: reconsider using vocal fry

      A little bit of discomfort is common but should resolve quickly after, if there’s anything that persists you should think about rebalancing how you’re getting to the distortion!

    • @ExtremeVocalInstitute
      @ExtremeVocalInstitute  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Growing pains are different than a sharp pain due to excess air or too much squeezing that leads to inflammation and prolonged pain. You’re gonna be sore anytime you work new parts of your body. That’s why I recommend short sessions to build muscle memory and good habits without overworking the vocal tract for beginners who are just getting comfortable with distortion. But you are right that if you experience significant pain that you should stop and reassess how you’re getting to the sounds

      Different people, different bodies, different problems. However to get the basic false cord growl is quite easy and to find out how to do it properly (without pain and vocal damage) does not take that long as the previous answer mentioned. You can probably achieve a short growl within a week.
      To hone that newly acquired talent, make it longer, louder, lower, higher, more gurgly, etc. is a different topic and that takes months - but the basic of the basics is quite easy.
