    5:55 - the background of someone going "yes yes" just means the batsman has fallen into the trap - driving at every ball relentlessly, wants to feel bat on ball, bowler pitches it up with some away swing and gets the catch. Absolute master...

    I have not watched Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Jeff Thomson and Dennis Lillee. I imagine it was a bit like this. Steyn is the symbol of a bygone era and the last of the great fast bowlers who terrorized batsmen.

    • @zebesiv
      @zebesiv Před rokem +41

      They say that about every era. And the end of the decade it's gonna be Pat Cummins & Jasprit Bumrah.

    • @abhijiththampi
      @abhijiththampi Před rokem +92

      @@zebesiv is that true though? Cummins, as good as he is, evokes discomfort, not terror. Its his guile and cunning that makes batsmen wary of them. Bumrah is the same. I imagine from my time it would be like facing Pollock, Vaas or Mcgrath. Even the premier speedster of that time, Brett Lee, didn't inspire fear. Shane Bond could've but he didn't last long enough for us to see. Mitchell Johnson did, but only towards the end of his career.

    • @hrishi6693
      @hrishi6693 Před rokem +18

      Anderson has been doing the same for 20 years

    • @zebesiv
      @zebesiv Před rokem +12

      @@abhijiththampi Oh I see what you mean now. I think placing Bumrah and Cummins in the same basket as McGrath and Pollock is a bit unfair. Both are 10kph quicker on average and both are better rounded, as in they both can do a bit of what Lillee and Thompson did, as well as a bit of what McGrath, Anderson, Hadlee etc did in smaller doses.
      There's actually several phenomena that leads to there not being as many such bowlers. Batsmen seem to have better reflexes and bowlers probably don't see the point in express pace anymore since it's too injurious (also 120-130kph medium pacers have also all but disappeared from the game as well). But to say that there can't be other fast bowlers like Lilee, Thompson etc is unfair. The game ebbs and flows over the decades. Test cricket has been dying for 70 years now and will continue to die for the next 200.

    3:02 if an Australian did that Mike Haysman would whinge about it for the rest of the test. Also, Michael Clarke was clearly the best test batsman in the world from mid 2011 to mid 2013. Carried an Australian side that was battling to be honest.

    5:21 Perfection with the old ball to the world #1 at the time on 80. Bowled beautifully in this innings. Clarke weathered the storm so well. Great knock.
    That first ball that got Watson was a peach. Only a number 11 could middle that one.
    Fantastic test cricket.
