  • F1 22 is out, and as per usual everyone is playing the MyTeam game mode. This mode introduces an 11th team to the grid, and always produces drama and action. So in this video I wanted ask: do we need an 11th team in real life?

    No, but that is not the point. What really baffles me, is how the FIA (who is responsible for deciding which teams are allowed to race in F1) is overruled by a private corporation (FOM, which is owned my Liberty Media). If the rules state that there is the possibility of up to 13 teams and that a team willing to enter has to pay a 200 million dollar fee, than thats the rule, you know? They pay and they are allowed to start, its easy as that. We shouldn´t even have to debate the question that´s debated right now.

    • @broeretop1
      @broeretop1 Před rokem +28

      I get that "newcomers" preferably want to merge with an existing team. But if you fulfill the requirements and cough up the 200mil, you should be allowed to enter(up to the limit stated in the rules). But none of this "teams blocking new entries" or the FOM(I guess?) deciding you can't for some reason like Andretti. I find it all very strange.

    • @Athrun82
      @Athrun82 Před rokem +1

      200 Mil? Where did you get that number? From what I know is that a potential new team has to put forth a payment of 50 mil which will be given back tom the team once it's qualifications have been made sure /I think after a certain amount of time). In essence they pay a sort of security lest the entry is not serious.

      @@Athrun82 For sure, man. And yeah, absolutely it is! I believe they even call the payment the 'anti-dilution fee' to 'compensate' the other teams for their loss of market share. Think if there's a pie of cash to split, instead of 10 teams + fom its now 11 + fom. That's what the first guy was saying. 200 million is an absurd amount of cash, but that's the rule. Okay. So why is there even a debate if there is a team willing to satisfy the rules to enter?

  • @yannickvaz694
    @yannickvaz694 Před rokem +94

    Yeah, even when I wrote my comment on your community post, I wholeheartedly believed that having another team would still be better. I personally would love to see Andretti and Audi join F1 (especially if Audi uses Lamborghini's brand image for their team).

    • @yannickvaz694
      @yannickvaz694 Před rokem +1

      @@ForelliBoy To be fair, Team Modena is an example of why F1 should be wary of adding new teams to the Sport. McLaren (and Senna) tested the same Lamborghini engines and Senna said they were incredible. McLaren chose not to run it because Lamborghini's financial status at the time looked bad (the company went through some big problems before being sold to VW and Audi). Team Modena being a relatively small team took the engine and name but couldn't do much with it.
      If we look at where they are now, Lamborghini is thriving under Audi's control. If we look at both company's future, it seems like Lamborghini can benefit more from a commercial standpoint than Audi. It seems like Audi wants to go all-electric with their road cars while Lamborghini wants to go hybrid, and the 2026 rules will use hybrid engines. Compare that with what would become their rival teams, Audi will need to fight Mercedes while Lamborghini will need to fight Ferrari and McLaren. The reason Audi wants to join F1 is a combination of technology, brand image, and road car advertising, but Lamborghini can benefit more from these than Audi will (apart from maybe brand image).
      Now if we talk about liveries, imagine a Lamborghini F1 team with the lime green Squadra Corse livery. Audi's livery would also look pretty cool with their white and black car with a red nose (very similar to the 2000s McLaren liveries, but more sharper), but I feel Lamborghini's would be more noticeable. I believe an "Audi-Lamborghini" team would be great for both companies, but Lamborghini on its own will benefit more than Audi by having an F1 team.

If the new team can establish itself like Haas yeah, a 22-car grid is better than a 20-car one, but if not I don't think we need to add more backmarkers just for the sake of it.

    I think new teams should be welcomed (when I started watching F1 there were nearly 40 cars competing for 26 grid slots) but there is one aspect that all should remember: one team will be last. And being last doesn't pay well. So if you have sponsors who demand good results you better deliver or the team is gone within a few seasons. And if a works team is getting last places it might be even worse as a constrcutor can't afford the price tag for several years as a return on investment is basically demanded

    • @BiggieTrismegistus
      @BiggieTrismegistus Před rokem

      It's true that someone has to be last. The obvious hope is that any new teams would at least be competitive in the midfield. Someone will be the back markers for a race but if who that someone is changes from weekend to weekend I hope that would at least be tolerable for any new teams, especially with the new cost cutting rules in place. Ideally needing less money to put a car on the grid will entice some manufacturers or other racing teams (like Andretti). At the very least it would nice to have one or two engine builders who don't have their own works teams. Unless a works team screws up very badly it's unlikely that a customer team will ever be able to consistently beat them.

    I do agree that another team would be entertaining and give talents a chance to be in F1. But the FIA and F1 would first need to solve issues like the backlog that happens on tracks like Monza. Where there is a huge queue to start your quali lap. Another team would congest that even more. There are a good few tracks where that is an issue. Then ofc more backmarkers for the top teams. With all that said it would be interesting with a new team and to see how they do. But there are some big inherent problems with it.

    The FiA is refusing andretti autosports entering F1 and I think that the reason they're doing that is because they're angling to lure Roger Penske into throwing his hat in the ring once the new rules package for 2026 is confirmed which would go hand in hand with the new technical regs for powerterains in 2024.
    He's got the money too back up his intentions and wouldn't accept any half measures when it comes to the quality of the equipment drivers and staffing of the team, but the big reason is: he has had a long term working relationship with General Motors via IndyCar that goes back at least 15 years which could potentially bring a major american automaker (most likely either under the Cadillac or Chevrolet brands) into F1 as an engine supplier/factory team for the first time since ford tried unsuccessfully to become a factory team (under the home brand) in F1 almost 40 years ago.
    You can bet that if GM were to get into F1 and be successful it would almost certainly lure ford back into the sport either as an engine supplier or works team which is something that the FiA has been dreaming of for decades and it would be liberty media's literal wet dream too have that happen for exposure of the sport in america.

The only reason Aston did is extreme upgrades and Williams only scored points because of retirements and a weird phenomenon with the hard tire. But as John stated, more teams can save the pre-existing teams from folding and also allow back of the field drivers to actually race.

      Agreed. There are currently too many good drivers who can't get an F1 seat. If the teams do things the right way and are solidly mid-pack when they join I think adding two more teams would be the way to go.

  • @whyareyoureadingmynickname8158

    I don't know, honestly. It sounds good on paper but experiences from the past told me that more teams means more stinkers. Just remember the 90's minnow teams, Super Aguri and 2010's newcomers. Also, if teams like Audi wanted to join F1, it's more likely that they would buy another team (like AM, Haas or even Williams). For me, 10 teams seems like an ideal number, but I wouldn't mind 11th team joining in.

    10 would be fine if Alpha Tauri was replaced with an independent team and Haas was replaced with an owner that has some sort of ambition.

      What do you say about my beloved Haas? Look how far theyvve come already this season! Gene always slumped because there was no algorithm for the needed money to drive competitivly! He is full onboard now with the Costcap. Only thing that holds Haas back is the moneyloss of Gazprom and the drought of Sponsors. They even will bring updates this season. Other than Mick who has a classic bad first half (though I should mention his points in Silverstone) this year and the future look great for them!
      Alpha Tauri... I'd say it's lack of quality personnel in the Offices and the lack of full on funding of RB. Though for me thats totally fine, having a Midground team fighting well for it and training youngsters.
      I just wish Alpine had the same with a Renault-Nismo.

    I want to see it, but not another B-class private battle a la HRT/Manorussia/Loterham. If they're not in the running for points come their second season, waste of time. When the 2012 bottom end was decided by Petrov's 11th place in Brazil (rather than actually getting a point or two), something is wrong.
