Hey everyone! Josh here with a tutorial and today I'll be teaching you how to convert almost any video file to an MP4 that is 100% editable inside video editors such as VEGAS Pro! For example, you can convert an MKV to MP4 and also convert an AVI to MP4.

For everybody who wants to just change the container of the file, mkvtoolnix might be a better option. It only puts the video and audio streams into a diffrent container like from mkv to mp4.
I've been using and recommending Handbrake for years when dealing with problematic files. Converting them to formats that my editors would like.
and it's safe? the website looks kind of old and that worries me ha ha.

First time Handbrake user. Thanks for the straightforward video. It helped me cut the size of my Apple video by 80% by converting from 1080p .mov to 720p30 .mp4 with H.264.
Had a professional service that converted some VHS video. Most came back as MOV files but the wedding video came back converted to an MPG file. Needed to convert the MPG to MP4 so I could edit some family films in iMovie. Had a problem with the MPG to MP4 conversion with the voices not synching when converting through Handbrake. Followed your video and used your settings and voila - IT WORKED! Thank you for your help!

NICE! glad you made this. I use to use handbreak alot but kept finding issues with my videos. Found it hard to get a near lossless quality video on CZcams after using handbreak.
IT doesnt work it always save the file as m4v whatever I did .even if I change the destination folder extension it gets back to m4k!!! :((((
We got the same problem. I want to convert it from M4V to MP4. Sadly this method did not work. Maybe not working for M4V.

I shot a video in 4k (25p 100) in dimensions 16:9 and in the editing software I turned it to 9:16 so that it fits Tiktok. How do I shrink it to fit WhatsApp, that is, up to 64 mb without harming its quality because it seems to come out "smeared" in WhatsApp? Thanks
Hey, when I select Mp4 format it makes it into a M4v! What gives?
If you get all your settings correct and then change the m4v to mp4 right before you start to encode, it should come out mp4. Im not sure why Handbrake likes to do that.
@@ScrapyardFilms So you go down to the "save as" and change it from .M4v to . mp4 and then click on encode?
It's the same thing! M4v is used by apple. Just change the extension and it should function the same, the containers store information in an identical fashion *most* of the time.
@@ScrapyardFilms when I go to "save as" I only the option "mp4 (*.mp4, *.m4v)" and the video always ends as .m4v, any solution? I need mp4
@Lucas What about changing the extension after the encoding is finished? It says that if I change the extention that the video might beacome unusable.
I have an mp4 that plays on my computer and my phone but once transferred to a flashdrive and I attempt to use it on other devices like my Blu-ray player, it'll play the sound but wont show me video. Other mp4s will play using that method from my flashdrive but not this file. What should I do or transfer to?
Question: I tried to deinterlace a video by putting the deinterlacing option but it didn't work and i don't know why. How i can i deinterlace a video and put in progressive mode correctly? Also, can you please send me a link of the latest of HandBrake just to make sure?

Thank you for the video but I found my doubts in comments :) I needed to export in .mp4 but it always do .m4v then now I know if you in navigate, to save as, you write .mp4 in the tittle, deleting the .m4v that it says, it works, finally it save correctly .mp4

@@obelchior Actually I know that in settings if you remove automatic format export and you choose .mp4 then the program always will export by default .mp4

I have an issue using Davinci Resolve 18 as the Mp4 video does not work when dragged to the timeline. Davince told me to concert file extensions using Handbrake but how do I know what extension to convert to? Can you help?

I feel like this is a stupid question but I haven't seen anyone answer it, does it CHANGE the original video, so say I convert a video then go back and watch the original will the original have been changed at all because of the conversion?
Have you tried changing the extension from .mkv to .mp4?
You can just type it in and see if it works. ".mkv" is just a container format that probably holds an ".mp4".
Found a fix for files converting to m4v format. Go to file>preferences>general and uncheck the part that says "Use iPod/iTunes friendly (.m4v) file extension for MP4"

When I converted the file to mp4 it ended up making the video alot brighter, do you know how I can fix this?
I have been frustrated with the quality of the converted files. I just watched this video and adjusted my settings. Wish me luck! I am not liking some of GoToMeeting"s changes with their functions.
ok, HB is relativly easy to use...and free ! but, but, it's not managing correctly the subs ! in fact not the .pgs subs apparently that I had in a movie (H265 remasterd, from 1953 !). I tried many times to convert at H264, to mp4 for exemple, never fixed. I can have a basic language such as UK or FR but no subs, I may see the subs and select one of them, but they never arrived in the final result.
Sometimes when I convert a video it takes 5 minutes, then maybe the next time it will take 20 minutes or longer, I prefer the 5 minutes, can you help????

i have a problem, i‘m using after effects for my vids & i just rendered the vid etc & then i put it into handbrake but handbrake instantly changed the format into 1645x1080 instead of 1920x1080 (that’s what the resolution of the original vid is) & when i‘m trying to change it, the video just gets stretched out on the sides but the left edge of the vid is still missing and idk what to do. i already rendered a 2nd time but it still didn‘t work :(
I finally have a copy of handbrake that works in 4/22. Seems to work properly, but resulting file is unwatchable. Audio and video are unwatchable. Any advice??

I use Mac and when I follow all instructions after saving the short video clip onto my desktop from Handbrake, I keep getting the message that “the document could not be opened and that quick time player could not open files in the data format. Sigh 😔

The first video I tried to convert right after I downloaded HandBrake was a 44 second MPEG video shot with an old standard def Canon FS200 camcorder. I'm sure I set it to convert the MPEG to MP4. Don't know what I did but it came out as an "M4V" video, which played on my Windows 10 computer. Tried the same conversion again, same MPEG video, and it came out as MP4. What is an "M4V" format? How did I screw that up?
I've seen that happen before and if you just change the ending '.m4v' to '.mp4' and then export it, it should stay as an mp4. Pretty weird issue.
Go to Tools -> Preferences of Handbrake, go to Output Files, under MP4 File Extension change from automatic to Always Use MP4. But you can just rename the extension as well from m4v to mp4 without issues.
How to get 240 p in output.

Has anyone had any trouble changing their dimensions? I can't change mine from W 640 L 480. Everytime I type in my dimensions it switches back. Anybody body know what I'm doing wrong?
i like Hanbrake , but i also like "freemake video converter" . handbrake doesnt have "Rotate video" options, when you downloaded a video file which is basically for mobile phone's vertical capture. so Free make has this option .
Does anyone else experience that HB shifts redtones? When I use x264 redtones appear oversaturated and rather orange. I have this issue with HB only.
I've done this 4 times over the past week waiting 8 hours at a time to compress a one hour video. I follow the instructions perfectly and my video comes out as a text format NOT an MP4. What am I doing wrong???

Hey man, why do my colours change, when I convert from avi to mp4. Is this a quality issue or mp4 (I mean because of the compression into mp4 from avi itself), or is this a settings issue. Basically I am converting a world of tanks recording, but when watching it after handbrake, all the colours are deep and dark, making green look like black etc.

I dunno why but now handbrake is lowering quality a lot. This didnt happen before and cant seem to fix it, tried installing, reinstallin, but nothing changes. Im stuck with shit quality.

I used handbreak to lessen the size of my video and I always make sure it's in the MP4 format before doing the process. But when it's finish. The file itself is in M4V File (.m4v) . I tried to change to webm and after looking what type again, still M4V File (.m4v). What could be wrong?

I noticed that it will only output up to 1920 x 1080, but my source footage is 2560x1440 and I'd like to keep it at that for now. Am I missing a setting somewhere that will allow me to convert and keep that size?

You should be able to do this in Handbrake. Make sure that you change it from automatic cropping to manual cropping and then set all those values to 0. After that you can tell it the resolution you want your output video to be.
