      @@paulgerrard9227 I think of booking sites more like agencies. They do charge a small markup because they are providing a service, including, sometimes, making it easier to book and compare prices. But of course it's usually less expensive to book on the official sites.

    Hi Elyssa, we took Trenitalia in July from Rome to Florence (third time we have done this now) and we booked very early in advance with train line so got a very good price for first class, really comfortable, plenty of leg room, a packed snack box and was very quiet. Negotiating both stations in Rome and Florence was so easy. Everyone should follow your advice for a smooth trip.

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  Před 8 měsíci

      Sounds like you went about it perfectly! Glad you had such a smooth experience. This is why I like to plan my train travel in advance, so I can get just the kind of car service I want. Granted, between Rome and Florence, it's a short trip, but I'd still like to enjoy it! Thanks for your tips and for your kind support as always!

    One thing I'd like to mention is that at Roma Termini they do not show your train platform number until about 10 minutes before the train departure time. Being used to the train stations in Japan where it can take 10 minutes just to get to your train platform (the dreaded Shinjuku station!) I was freaking out the 1st time thinking I would miss my train. Luckily the platforms in Italy are not that far from the entrance gates. Wish I had known about that underground shopping shortcut in Florence!

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  Před 8 měsíci +2

      That's an excellent point! I am very used to the fact that they don't announce the track until right before the train arrives in the station. But I can see where it would be stressful if you are used to a much more organized or at least more timely system like what you have experienced in Japan. Yes, here, at most train stations, you can make your way to the tracks area and then once the track is announced, you just have to get to that platform. Thanks for watching and for commenting!

    • @clivebaxter6354

    I would add that there are discounts for seniors, me and you, youth, etc. May wife and I did three weeks in Italy all by train, booked in advance with the "silver" discount card and applied the discount to business or first class everywhere it was offered.

      Very good point! That's what I mean by booking early. Sometimes there are discounts you can only get in advance. Good to know you can still get senior discounts on the trains, as they have otherwise removed senior discounts at most sites in Italy.

    Hi Elyssa,
    Thanks for your channel. I just found out about it this past week. I have already watched quite a few videos of yours on this channel. It has been a while since we visited Rome - 2013 to be exact. I learned a lot about some of the hidden places in Rome after watching your videos this past week.
    Thanks to this video of yours about Italo. When I visited back in 2013, Italo had just got started and the only way to Florence from Rome was from the Tiburtina station nearby. Since I had ample time, I visited the exact spot where to board the train a day earlier so that there is no rush for our very early morning train to Florence. Based on your video I see that probably you may not have to go to Tiburnita for to take the train - straight from Termini.
    I will be referencing your videos for my future plans to Rome and Florence. It is very satisfying to see an American living in Rome and making videos in English for the wider audience - feels right at home.

      @Romewise  Před 8 měsíci

      Thanks so much! Going from Rome to Assisi is a little different as there is no non-stop fast-train option. All the trains to Assisi from Rome are regional trains. The journey takes a little over 2 hours. You can find some tickets that are non-stop, and more tickets that include one or more stops. So Italo is not an option for this, and you should look on Trenitalia (or Trainline).
      Or are you asking for a video about what to see and do in Assisi?

  • @andyroo9381
    @andyroo9381 Před 8 měsíci +3

    WOW! It has been a long time since I visited Florence! I think it might be 20 years ago now!!! Back in the day, there was a ticket counter where the ticket agents spoke several different languages. You had to look up and see where the "English" line was (I think they showed flags to demonstrate the various languages). EEEKS! Kiosks always befuddle me. I, myself, would probably arrive a few hours early and struggle with it all. This new system does intimidate me, BUT I would still go!!!! Thank you, Elyssa!

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  Před 8 měsíci

      Yes, I remember having to buy tickets from the people in the booths - and they are still there, which is great. But the kiosks have made it even easier. I use the kiosks for things like regional trains. For anything where a fast-train is involved, like going to Florence, Naples, Venice, etc, or where a more complicated journey is involved, like getting to Cinque Terre, I love booking this calmly in advance, so I have time to research the different options. Glad you found the video helpful!

    I enjoy your videos of Italy. I got back yesterday from a three-week travel there, and your videos gave me ideas. It is very possible to find places in Milan, Rome, Florence that have zero other people on the street. It depends a lot on your tolerance for anonymity and quiet, and your ability to walk away from crowds whatever the cost of missing a tourist attraction. I actually found the Trevi Fountain by accident while walking -wherever-, and quickly ditched the place. And I happened on the Spanish Steps from the top, quite be accident on a wonderful solitary walk. Thanks

    I travel only First Class on Italy’s trains. If I’m limited to a Regionale train I always check to see if it offers First Class, some do. I had a very dangerous stalking event on the train in 2nd Class, I had a First Class ticket but didn’t know I was in a 2nd Class car until the Conductress came in and told First class ticket holders to follow her. That church Santa Maria Novella is one of the most beautiful in Italy and you might as well start trip right!
    Also, beware, we bought a train from Tropea to Salerno. The train came and before first stop they checked our ticket and we were on the competitor train. He wanted a 200 euro fine each. We got off at first stop to buy ticket thru them and lady explained if we waited an hour the train we had already ticketed was coming. Moral: be careful which train cause they are not interchangeable.

      I love Santa Maria Novella so much and it's a shame more people don't visit it. I think with a short visit to Florence, it would be easy to miss. But it's so full of masterpieces!
      I don't know if you can visit any time soon but right now as I write this to you, they are renovating Masaccio's "Holy Trinity" and for 1.50€ you can climb the scaffolding and get right up close to it! You can actually look at the holy trinity straight on (as opposed to looking up at it from the floor.) It is AMAZING!!

      The shopping gallery does not have a name per se, but it's evident once you head down as it's shop after shop, plus of course, a bunch of places to eat.
      To exit the way I did, once you come down the escalator, make a left and keep moving towards the left hand side. You will see signs all along the floor that tell you where you are going. The goal to get out where I did, whether with the stairs I showed you or the ramp, is to go towards the exit for the "Piazza dell'Unità Italiana". Sometimes it can be a matter of finding available space if the train is really full.

      ItaliaRail does not run any train, it's an US-based agency.
      Why are Americans always obsessed with safety? Is that because of the big numbers of armed homeless people in US who are so desperate that they steal even used clothes?
      Anyway, Thieves can't jump off running trains whereas all stations are camera controlled: so the foreign minors forced to steal by their parents living in Eastern Europe target things that can be easily hidden and quickly sold. Not your underwear that, believe it or not, has no market outside the US.

      Many people prefer an easy to use third party platform like ItaliaRail or Trainline because it groups all the options from both Trenitalia and Italo in one place. Most are saying around 5-6 hours which is long but doable. I also see trains for Italo that say 2 hours but no details on it? Would that be true that it is so fast?

      @Romewise  Před 8 měsíci +2

      Thanks for watching my video.
      First of all, while I understand wanting to plan ahead, I do think you are a bit too early for April 2024. I would look now at options that are closer, so you can at least get an idea of the itinerary and pricing. Then, keep checking for April 2024. I'd probably start looking for those tickets from January 2024 on.
      This is something of a complex journey, as Cinque terra is somewhat remote with limited transportation options. So the first thing you have to do is get to the main transport hub of Cinque Terre, La Spezia.
      From there, it looks to me like the best and fastest options involve going to Pisa, then Florence, then Venice. There are a FEW options that take you from Monterosso - Milan and then from Milan to Venice only with regional trains, but this combo is not offered that often and it's actually slower than the above options because it's done with regional (slower) trains.
      No matter what, the journey is going to be fairly well all day (5-7 hours.)
      I still suggest using Trainline to check the schedules and see all your options.

    Hi, thanks for this helpful video.
    I have a question on cancellation and refund of tickets booked on the Trenitalia site. If we are unable to travel, how can we cancel the ticket. I can't find an option on their site even after i am logged in.
    Also, is there any percentage that gets refunded even for a non-refundable ticket that is cancelled up to 2 weeks in advance? Or even an option to change the date for travelling or getting vouchers for that amount?
    Look forward to a response on this please. Thanks!

      Thanks for watching my video. I'm glad you find it helpful. Unfortunately I am not in a position to know the rules of the tickets you purchased from Trenitalia. Depending on the tickets you purchased, you may or may not be entitled to a partial or full refund but you'll need to contact them to find out.
      At the top of the Trenitalia web page there is a button you can click for customer assistance. This is useful only if you registered with the site when you booked. I suggest you write them with your questions and your ticket information.
      Alternatively, click the button for Support, and there you can find options for contacting them, including online chat and phone options.
      I hope you will get the answers you need!

      Hi Tim, as you may have seen at minute 01:54, a round-trip ticket on a high speed train between Rome and Florence will cost something like 75-100€. This will depend on what type of car you book, and how far out. Sometimes I see these crazy deals like R/T in one day for 50€. But it's usually closer to about 70-80€ R/T.

      The mall is just called "Galleria Commerciale Santa Maria Novella" where Santa Maria Novella is the name of the station (which is named for the church you can see in the background at 12:31), and Galleria Commerciale just means shopping center.
      The exact spot at 12:31 is called the Piazza dell'Unita Italiana. Here is a pin:

    Are all train tickets for specific time? How can I buy tickets in advance if I am flying into Rome? I don’t know for sure when I will be cleared through customs. I will be flying to Fiumicino airport in Rome and plan to get to Florence. Any suggestions if I should try to get advanced tickets?

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  Před 4 měsíci +1

      The fast trains are timed. I don't recommend purchasing tickets in advance if what you want is to catch the train from Rome to Florence after you land.
      I suggest just getting to Rome, heading to Termini station, and then buying the next available ticket to Florence. These trains run frequently so even in high season, you shouldn't have any trouble finding seats.

      Are you saying you will arrive in Florence at 10PM? It really depends on where you are staying. If I was arriving at 10PM with a friend, I'd probably head out to the taxi stand on the main level. Not even for safety but rather for easily and quickly getting to my hotel.
      But if you are staying nearby, within easy walking distance, then yes, you can take this route, especially if you are not carrying too much luggage. As with any big city, certainly at night, and of course as female travellers, just be vigilant and aware of your surroundings.

    I’ve seen people post about being stopped by law enforcement wanting to see their passport, and, many times, it seems to happen at the train station. I’ve always heard to never carry your original passport; you only need a photocopy with you. Is that true?

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  Před 7 měsíci +1

      There is some back and forth on this. You do need some form of government-issued ID when you take a train, even just when you go around Rome or anyplace in Europe. Usually for non-residents that ID is a passport. In this case, a photocopy would not suffice.
      It is my understanding that if you have a government-issued ID that is not a passport, usually a driver's license, that would suffice. A copy of your passport could supplement that but when an official asks to see your ID, they need a real piece of ID, not a photocopy.
      The photocopy is fine for when you are visiting sites and they want to make sure the name on the ticket is yours (such as for certain Colosseum tours), or to check one's age if you are seeking an age-based discount.
      You would also need a passport if you are travelling between European countries.
