This was exactly my reaction. A few days ago I tried to cover the Tokyo Ghoul OP 1 which is Unravel by TK(Toru Kitajima) from Ling Tosite Sigure. Despite being an Indian I sang the song in Japanese. Everything was fine until I heard my voice. I was shattered and upset for a few days. I thought that I should quit music and singing. But later I thought no one is stopping me from trying again. So I gave it another attempt. I tried my best and it turned out to be better than the previous one. I was not quite satisfied but I still shared it with my friends. Luckily I didn't got any hate rather most of my friends were blown away due to my almost accurate Japanese pronounciation and remembering the full song. They were very supportive.(I don't know Japanese though. I can understand only few phrases and some words).
If anyone of you gets upset by hearing their own voice? please don't get upset. Your voice is not bad as you think you are just not used to hearing your voice. So don't give up on singing just because of it. Try your best. I hope you have nice day :) LOVE FROM INDIA
Did you get any better? You are a very brave man to share your singing with your friends. I started singing from the bottom of the bottom, without being able to hit a single note correctly, almost like being tone deaf. The worst part is you don't even understand how much wrong you are at that point(when you are a beginner), so I really think you are fearless for the fact that you shared it still.
I have a worse story. I also tried to sing unravel, but in my case I did knew Japanese. But, the thing is, I literally sounded like a woman at some parts. Not even joking. But thats not necessarily a bad thing though, I think
I do have very bad voice tembre (genetically), but I still can sing correct notes in key if I try hard enough, after a couple of months worth of practice. In the end, if you want to sing, just sing, I guess.

If you want to get better do vocal exercises regularly for 30 mins and gargle with warm water every morning. These helped me out. Now the point where you mentioned you sounded like a woman. I think it's not a problem. I bet TK doesn't sound like that in his regular life. It is obvious that the higher the notes go your voice will get shriller. You don't have to worry about that. The reason I shared it was that after a few days of disappointment, I realized that giving up hurts more than failure itself. I'm impressed by the fact that you know Japanese. Keep doing small investments every day and one day you will get big returns. Keep improving :)
