    Thank you for demonstrating different tuning systems. Looking back I realise I never had a teacher who even seemed to be aware of them until I took up the viola at age 32. He never used the words just or pythagorean but told me what to check against what.

    • @violinlab
      @violinlab  Před 2 měsíci +1

      You're welcome. Tuning systems is a huge topic and I took the time to understand it. Many musicians intuit intonation and don't even know how they are bending from one tuning system to the next.

    As for chin rests and shoulder rests, I've finally come round to playing with neither (as Ricci said in his 80s: "I should have started like this"). Just goes to show: whatever works for you! I'd recommend giving it a fair try - it will feel alarming at first. Maybe ditch the shoulder rest first. I went through a period of practicing without and performing with.

    Aww, thank you for answering my question and all the other ones, this is so cool and a fantastic learning opportunity! I'm very relieved that you are quite relaxed about the pinky to start with. Nevertheless, I will definitely practice what you offered and do the stretching exercises regularly (I had never heard of them). The video you mentioned (Arvo Pärt, Spiegel im Spiegel) not only showed me great art in avoiding the pinky but also let me listen to one of the most wonderful pieces I've ever heard. This was the first time I came across it, I will definitely play it. The long bow strokes are a challenge!
    Thank you again, I love watching your channel. When I started playing a string instrument in my beginning 40ies, I ran into nearly every problem you describe for adult beginners. Now I'm 72 and just love weaving the sound together with others. 🥰

    Beth, thank you for your video response to my question to holding the violin. As a follow-up question: Should the violin be held parallel to the left shoulder or be held closer to the 11:00 or 10:30 position when looking down from above as if a drone were flying above me? Thanks you are a great teacher, gosh starting violin at five years old. Awesome. By the way what violin are you playing. Can you give us a history of the different violins you have played throughout your years?

    • @violinlab
      @violinlab  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Oh, I see. When you first asked your questions, I thought you meant angled as if it were a pig on a spit :). So to answer your question, the way I describe it is the midway point (10:30) between straight out to the left and straight in front.

    • @violinlab
      @violinlab  Před 10 měsíci +1

      It's an electric tuner and metronome, the kind they have in band rooms in schools. The brand is McAdams. I bought it used on Ebay. It plays pitches and beats super loudly!

      @@violinlab Thanks for your response Beth. I see it's an older Model 20/X, with real knobs for the user interface -- so much more useful and civilized than a touchscreen!
      I just rewatched a video from a few years ago of your playing the Bach Double (2nd movement) with your student in Algeria, where it's easy to see your wonderful influence on him. I'm friends with him, and I'm very thankful for the many ways you've mentored and helped him in his musical journey, and for your generosity in time and spirit. I am not a violinist, but he's encouraged me to watch your videos, and now I am very tempted to try violin myself -- they are that inspirational. I took some basic music courses and beginner piano at a local community college last year, and I expect that I'll have a bit more time when I retire soon. So you may hear from me next year.
      PS: If you could use the user's manual for your metronome, you can find it here: mcadams.info/MI/WebMan20.pdf

    Dear Instructor Beth, is there any advantage in covering the screw stem of the bow with fine thread? Might i gain better resonance and tone? Thanks for considering my question.😅

    • @violinlab
      @violinlab  Před 8 měsíci

      I actually don't know the answer to that. I assumed that fine thread was less costly than silver, or that makers use thread as a way of making the bow slightly lighter. But I don't know how it affects resonance.

    Is the bow running across the same string you are holding down? So if you are pressing your finger on the E string should the bow only be rubbing the E string ?and if you change to a core like D you press your finger on the D String and only run your bow on the D

    • @violinlab
      @violinlab  Před 6 měsíci

      Yes. Unless you intentionally are trying to play to notes together ("double stops") then the bow should be on one string at a time.
