My Daddy thought I was keeping CZcams a secret from him when I showed him he could listen to any song his heart desires. He immediately accused Mom and me of hiding CZcams from him LOL. He was so precious, and so excited to be able to hear all his old favorites. He promptly called his brother to come over and showed him the wonders of CZcams. I miss my Daddy so much, but that was a good day for him and he was so happy and excited like a child.

I'm 50, and I have similar memories. My mom never figured out how to set her digital watch, and until her death my grandma had a very hard time with answering machines. Her messages always sounded like she was reading a letter she had written to me (and maybe that was the case), but to her credit, she braved the hellish things all the same with her old rotary phone. New things are just harder to grasp the older we get, so I'm also doing my best to keep up. I have no children, but have kept in touch with someone I once tutored - she is 21, which helps. ;) Hope you also have a wonderful weekend!

I truly love and value our elderly but after working for years in a cell phone store, I will honestly say I cringed when most walked in. They think we control EVERYTHING that happens on their phone including their home internet service with other companies. One sweet lady came in upset saying her “facer book” was hacked and she reported it to them and then lost everything. What actually happened is that she reported HER own account as fraudulent and so they froze it. Of course she expected us to fix it with FB somehow. One said she was going to bring her knitting in the store and sit a few hours while I cleaned out her thousands of photos…..ummmmm we work on commission so not happening but I did my best to show her how. The worst is the older men with androids who have clearly been on multiple porn sites and as a result their phone would be riddled with viruses. Being female myself, it was awkward having to explain what happened and how they can avoid it in the future. All handled with a lot of patience and a little humor. Bless them!

So when my terminal diagnosis was posted to a social media asking for prayers my "older" (in age) religious connections were sending me giant "LOL"'S with emoji hearts.
Kind of made me laugh & was also a little sad, because even though I was aware of what they meant to be saying, a huge line of "lol's" after just posting your diagnosis does kind of hit you in a weird way. Emoji and shorthand misunderstanding is not an age thing.Texting started becoming a thing when I was in my 30s and I couldn't bother learning the lingo. Half the time it's like trying to read a line or paragraph of specialized license plates that only make sense to the person sending it or takes too long to translate. An occasional misspelling or run on sentence, fine, however just because it's a text doesn't mean we have to have a breakdown of grammatical standards. If I have to interpret emojis and shorthand, I ignore it. If it's important, the person will call sooner or later.

And like most languages, most of it is unconscious, and it's harder to learn when you're older... for instance, you know that clicking the x in the top right corner will close the page, and you know where it is without having to think about it... now imagine you took a Native from somewhere in the Amazon that had never seen a computer; there is absolutely nothing obvious about the idea 'x' means 'close' and that it's in the upper-right corner.

Sometimes what’s on their minds isn’t the nicest thing though. When I was younger I had a severe eating disorder for over 12 years. Most of my teenage years I barely weighed 100 lbs (I’m 5’6 )and in my early 20’s around 105ish. When I got married at 27 I had come a long way and was no longer under weight and was around 135. When we went to see my grandma and show her the wedding pics, because she was unable to attend, the first thing she said when she opened the album was, boy, you sure got chubby, didn’t ya? It took everything I had not to cry, and I could feel my face burning. My mom came over, gave me a hug and whispered in my ear, try not to take it personally, she’s not trying to be mean. But it was really hard not to and to not let it destroy all the progress I had made as well. But thankfully I had the support of my friends and family and I was able to maintain my weight. But it really did hurt to hear her say that to me.
Older people do have a lot of things they can teach us and they have lots of stories to share. But they also have no filter, and it seems like the older they get, the less they care about certain things. Now of course not every older person is like that, there are plenty of absolutely kind and sweet elderly people as well.

The frequency with which I see people answer Amazon questions about an item with "I don't know" is hilarious and it's almost definitely entirely from old people who get confused. Do they think Amazon is assigning them homework? They don't seem to know that they don't have to respond unless they actually know the answer.

She signed it "lol- Bonnie".. she could not figure out why the friend had blocked her and refused to speak to her at church. When we read the message, we asked her why she said "lol".. her reply, "it means lots of love" 🤦‍♀️ They lady hates her to this day!

So my husband got his mom on Facebook last year, which has been a disaster, honestly. Well, a few months ago, my FIL started bringing up that he didn't like how his estranged brother kept coming up on MIL's Facebook, why does his name keep coming up on the Facebook, etc. Every time he would complain about this, I'd go through her Facebook, trying to figure out what he was talking about. I assumed his brother had a Facebook account and was popping up on her "people you may know" list, but I could never find him. I looked through the friends of other family members, nothing. I finally figured it out one day when she brought up the brother again and said he must have sent her a message, she saw his name, but now she can't find the message and was all freaked out. Guys. All of this was caused by her seeing his name on her phone contact list, and then not remembering where or why she saw the name. I deleted him from her contacts so she wouldn't see his name again haha. I'm not sure why she even put his name in her contacts, they haven't spoken in over 20 years.

They know how to use their interfaces - and little to nothing about what actually makes what they use work. That said, most now writing code tend to be lacking when it comes to creating highly efficient code. It's not really their fault actually, since computers are now so "resource rich" compared to what we had to deal with years ago, and code libraries mean that they don't need to personally write the majority of the code comprising their programs. 🙂

It is not that I don't understand how they work. It is more a certain attitude found on those platforms that goes against how I was raised. Rudeness, stupidity, trolling.. things like that. I mean... there were some stupid trends a few year ago like planking or the cinnamon challenge but over time things got more dangerous like eating tide pods, giving "medical advice" that goes against common sense. And yes, sadly it is a lot of boomers that fall for this crap. Thankfully I also see a lot of Millenials and Zoomers and institutions fighting against these trends and misinformation, be it with videos like Charlotte makes, showcasing those trends in the point and laugh way or the more serious youtubers like Dr Hasudungan or Harvard Medical

I think with many of us older folks, it's because we are heavily medicated. If I took all the drugs my doctors have tried to push on me I'd be brain-dead by now. I was once on an anti-seizure med that had me so disabled I couldn't remember my son's name (he's an only child) and I forgot how to use a drill, or drive my car. I don't have seizures, it was supposed to control nerve pain... it didn't. 4 years ago, I was taken off a drug suddenly without a long enough tapering off period and DID develop seizures and akathesia that lasted 2 years.
I will never take another drug like that again, I hope.

I'm 'older' but not old old yet :) I had an issue with a bad root canal. Just before it burst I had a small taste of dementia. I found my best earrings wrapped in kleenex under the couch cushion, I put a book in the fridge, could not do math for the life of me, I couldn't get the right numbers into the calculator even. I realised I couldn't drive, which was actually fortunate as I wanted to get drugs to kill myself due to the pain.
And yes, I had told my dentist FOUR times about the increasing pain and she kept yelling at me that nothing was wrong. I saved the piece that was ejected from my gum.
Moral is, if you think something is not right with treatment you MUST make a scene with someone. I would not have let an animal go through that. Problem is, by the time we know something is not right, WE are not right....

@@Chahlie That is a horrible experience you went through! Teeth infections can be very dangerous and cause brain infections. I hope you found a better dentist!
So true, by the time you know something is not right, it can be very difficult to explain. My doctor never did believe me when I had such a bad reaction from stopping a medication, even though it's very common, and called "antidepressant discontinuation syndrome". Mostly because the drug companies are not truthful to doctors and downplay the severe side effects of withdrawal. I found research done by Eli Lilly, the makers of Cymbalta (the one I had taken) that found that 1 out of 10 patients had severe withdrawal symptoms that were incapacitating, some leading to suicide.
These drugs are over-prescribed by doctors who are not psychiatrists and don't understand the risks.

Love Robert! True story - When I was in high school I used to pick up the bus at a friend's house every morning. My arrival would signal that it was time to get everything together. I was sick one day and stayed home. My friend and his sister missed the bus.

    • @rosealeigh_
      @rosealeigh_ Před 2 lety +1

My friend and I use to do this all the time. Our bus wouldn’t go up our hill to pick us up so we had to go to the bottom of the hill to catch it. My friend would walk down to my house that meant we had about 5-10 minutes until we had to leave my house to catch it so she would finish the rest of her toast/bagel and share a very small piece with my cat and then it would be time to go. Once she wasn’t there in time to walk down and I had to call her, not sick just slept through her alarm. Told my mom and she was kind and just drove us. If we weren’t there though my bus drive gave us 5 mins to see if we would show up since we were the first stop.
Random has nothing to with the story but we had an hour long ride school started at 6:33 (yes stupid time), so the bus came at 5:20. There would be times I wouldn’t come home from an out of town basketball game from a town that was an hour away until 1am and it was mandatory for us to be at school the next day and if we were late we couldn’t play in the next game, school rule not my coaches.

(the reason its apparently easier for babies/kids to learn how to use tech is because they don't have to unlearn previous behaviours, thats why it's also easier for kids to learn a second language. Adults apparently have trouble letting go of the 'rules' of their first language. TMYK)

I never say Iphone or Ipad, but "handy" (I'm from Switzerland, that's how we call it:-)) or "telefonino" and tablet. I love how you sneeze and the germs comes out, ahahah! Babys may know how to use social media, ipads and so on (it's all intuitive), but ask a child to do a research on the internet and you'll see what happens...! Of course old generation have problems... they lived 50 years without that tecnology! I also worked as assistant in an elder pension (I hope it's the right name, elderly people go there to get nursed): It's a fact, elder people need more time for everything: for eating, for understanding a question, for giving you an answer, for getting ready to go out and so on. But they are still intelligent, they are not stupid or like that, don't forget it. Also the motoric is not so good anymore, try to write on a screen when you have artrosis... The contents make us laugh because they lived in a completely other way, they have other ideas, other proiorities. We should learn from them, not only laughing at them.
They use random emoji to start a conversation! Smart :o)

I actually talked about this in my psychology class. When people learn skills at a younger age it’s easier to adapt (since they are learning it as their brain is developing and learning) but since the older generation didn’t have the technology we have today, and they had to learn it at a time when their brain was fully developed it can be harder to learn!
