  • Until 1973, BBC2 made a lot of trade test transmissions en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade_t... to cover the long periods of daytime when there wasn't any regular programming scheduled. Sometimes, there could be as many as seven trade test colour films shown - that must have bored the fucking PANTS off viewers.
Nearly all of the 156 different films made were shown over and over again...90 times on average for each film and this was done to allow the likes of Rumbelows and others to demonstrate tv sets to customers. In between each film, there was the test card and that could be on for anything for an hour and a half to a couple of hours with about five or six different pieces of music.
I think it was last year when I subscribed to Paul Sawtell's channel on youtube and it looks like he's spent many hours putting together examples of these transmissions. The one here is from the morning of the final such transmission, Friday 24 August 1973, apart from Playschool, there were four colour films shown until regular programming started at 16:30.
Because this was quite a big file, I spent ages editing the test card interval, which was quite fucking lengthy, choosing with pieces of music to keep, not to mention cutting out the long loud tones (which you normally hear before startup of a morning and after closedown last thing at night) and that was the easy bit. Editing the audio track was the hardest...it's a wonder Video Pad Editor didn't fucking crash on me!
What you see (and hear) here is the first part of the lunchtime test card interval...thirty-six minutes fifteen seconds to be precise. In between is where two trade test colour films were, with their associated junctions. In its entirety, the full interval (once I'd finished tweaking it), is just under two hours long at 01:13:48 and that's just the condensed version! This has been the first time I've ever done near-enough a full morning test card interval so I hope you like it; if not, then tough SHIT
