When music can transport you back to a happy time on a Thursday night at 7:30 on BBC1 when Tomorrow's World had just ended and Top of the Pops had just began
...surely that time-transporting was Doctor Who's department.... :)
Or even when Tomorrow's World was just starting.
With the sound on Radio 1 FM
Back to happier times when nobody knew the BBC was populated by nonces.
its impossible to overstate how futuristic this sound was. i remember a few of us taking ghetto blasters into school and i would usually rock a tape with the twelve inch versions of 19. they were the days man.
Still reminds of my favourite time of the evening. Thursday at 7.30pm BBC 1 I would be sitting on my chair after doing my homework, ready for this tune The Wizard, top of the pop's, brill, can't beat it.
It became the Top of the Pops theme in too late an era for Wizzard to be featured.
Yes. Followed by Tomorrow's World with Maggie Philbin and a bloke called Howard.
Thursday nights just aren't the same without TOTP. This is my favourite TOTP theme. Classic.
Top Of The Pops brought me here! Here in the United States, I used to watch it on CBS Late Night back in the day on Friday nights while growing up in my school days. British & US pop music in one place when you had the weekends off, those were the days!

The BBC did try out a show in an expanded venue with a live audience in a programme called Must Be the Music,briefly,several years ago. I saw it once or twice but am not sure how successful or not it turned out.

This tune was used as the TOTP theme between 1986 to end of September 1991
Took over from the late great Phil Lynott's song yellow pearl ..
then vince clarke did the following theme tune
@@Sanddancer1 No, that was later. 1991-1995 was Tony Gibber. Good theme. Vince's theme started in 95 or 96.
And it was still in the Thursday early evening slot right up to and including 1995. The shift to Friday evening,which had taken place by early 1998,was the beginning of the show's demise.
@@rjjcms1Plus the fact that there were increasingly more ways to consume music product on the television. TOTP was no longer the be all and end all.

For a while, I knew Paul Hardcastle for his First Light song Loving You, sampled by Vector Graphics in their song Destine. Today I discovered he only made the most iconic music show theme of all time. What a talent!

It actually kinda slaps harder now than it did in 1986 as Top of the Pops’ theme tune.
Truth. It's that far removed from that TOTP period now that people can now appreciate for the standalone track it is.

... When Top of The Pops was the pinnacle of music TV... before they let Andi Peters become producer and Fearne Cotton got the Christmas Top of The Pops presentation gig!
Chris Cowey was the last great producer on that show imo. It went downhill after that.
