  • Air coolers have been proven to work very well in dry environments. I have a favorite air cooler, but they are hard to find, so I'm trying Honeywell's solution, model CL201AE ( amzn.to/2LXEhXV ). I unbox, test, and give a first impressions review of it.

    I can't here. It's a swamp in the summer. Still trying to drain it! lol I'd still stick with AC. I bought a portable second AC unit after my main went out one summer and needed something to get by while that got fixed. . The new split window units look cool and better than the older 1 block window units and much more quieter perhaps with the split design. As long as your insulate your exhaust hose on portable units - you're doing good. I haven't gone to full insulation - but wrapped tighly in 5 layers of aluminum foil and some dryer vent duct, keeps all the heat out the exhaust and never heat soaks.

    • @z352kdaf8324
      @z352kdaf8324 Před 4 lety +1

      I did set it up last 2 years and ran it to supplement main AC. trying to hold out this year - not sure if I'll make it - it's been pretty dry - I'm not sure if taking a vacuum to the inside heat exchange part helped any - but i'm getting good temps. Things might change if I turn my NAS back on. :( that thing is like a nuclear reactor with 20 drives.

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  Před 4 lety

      Where is here for you? If you can, the split window units are so much better. Its what my family in Taiwan use and its quiet, efficient, and looks way better than the traditional window units. Too bad it hasn't quite caught on here stateside as much.

      Hi Mary. It sounds like a major malfunction that requires the attention of an appliance repairman. Without taking it apart it’s tough to tell exactly what happened, but it is most likely caused by a short. Usually it won’t be the pump motor that is busted, but the circuit board. I would recommend having a professional take a look at it.

    Do you think you could use a dehumidifier along with the air cooler if you live in a humid city?

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  Před rokem

      Absolutely! But after you do that, you may be approaching power consumption levels of a very efficient air conditioner for similar results. So for humid areas, a traditional air conditioning unit is going to be best because it cools and dehumidifies as a part of the cooling process. So what would be better is A/C plus an air cooler.

    I'm wondering what's the problem with mine? It squeaks super loud and the fan doesn't want to move when I turn mine on. And sometimes when I leave the power on it eventually starts running properly but it takes a while for it to get going now. I opened it up and looked inside and I even tried to look at the fan and nothing is wrong with it that I can see visually. I'm wondering if there's a fan belt in this machine because I see a pannel above the fan that looks like it carries something else. I'm just wondering if you experience very loud squeaking from this machine or has anyone else? I'm about to open it up soon to see what that panel is behind above the fan is but just wondering if anyone else had the problem I'm having with this machine and if they have a solution? I'm past the warranty date so I can't take it back and customer service does not help at all.

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  Před 2 lety

      My guess is it needs to be cleaned out. Maybe hard mineral deposits over time have clogged up the fans / pumps over time. You could try running some hard water deposit solution to clear it up a bit and flush it out. But it sounds like its due for an overhaul, and these weren't really designed to be user serviceable. I'd say open it up and see if its worth cleaning out or just getting a new one.

      If the garage has a window ( or make a vent ), use AC with evaporative cooler (save on electricity cost by ~1/2). You need a larger cooler for 500SF ( or get two of the model in the video ) without AC. They should cool the garage down to 90F (cooler only no AC). Need to crack open the garage door when the cooler(s) is on.

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  Před 4 lety +2

      Great! I'm glad they are working for you in CO.
      These units need to be drained completely before storage, or when not in use. There is a plug at the bottom of the unit (usually some form of rubber) that you pull to drain. Make sure you do this outside, in a bathtub or somewhere you can let the yellow water come out because it will dump immediately.
      You can try to clean out the media... But you might find out that you probably need to buy new filter media: I found one here: amzn.to/3h3eBH2
      You can unscrew the back area and pull out the media. At that point it should be pretty clear if you need a new one or not.
      Use this as needed for your other cooler as a preventative/maintenance measure: amzn.to/390C4Wr (currently cheaper in multipacks)

      Its setting off some sensor. Maybe something is plugged or you didn't reach the minimum water level requirement.

    • @carmenquevedo1888
      @carmenquevedo1888 Před 2 lety

      When that happens most likely the air cooler water sensor is stuck because of hard water buildup. Towards the front of this unit you can see a little white knobbin that floats in the water hit it a couple times move it around but don't do it too hard just knock it loose and see if the sensor starts reading the water so it can run properly I have this unit and this is what exactly happened. I also have other brands where it would run for a little bit and then start beeping cuz there's no water but in actuality I had it completely full and I always would go into my water coolers to look for the little water reader they are usually white or look like they have a little round thing attached to them so that they will float in water. and move it around knock it loose from the calcium buildup some are easier to access than others but just try to move it around to get it to start floating so it could be that it can be sensed again.

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  Před 4 lety

      @@nancyyen1 It shouldn't (if new). You probably need to change your filter media? Or you are in a very humid area, and need to turn the pump down.

    • @nancyyen1
      @nancyyen1 Před 4 lety

      Mike Mu thank you I opened the filter media and the top hose broke loose thereby causing the water on the vents

      Just be careful to watch the white floater and don't overfill it. If you see any water in the indicator window, then the unit is already overfilled and will probably be leaking out the seams.

    How long does it last for if you fill it up?

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  Před 4 lety +3

      It really depends on what settings you set, and the environment. On full blast water and medium fan here in California 6 hours later still has water. It's a big tank.

    • @joeltucker306
      @joeltucker306 Před 4 lety

    Hypothetically - what if you loaded a significant amount of ice in the tub below - wouldn't that cool the water better than the odd trickle of melting ice above?

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  Před 4 lety +2

      I wasn't able to measure any reasonable difference when adding ice top or bottom. The pump is a like fountain that flows down over the ice. The ice pretty much melts in minutes at full pump speed (obviously environmental conditions in play).
      If you are right up next to it, you may feel a difference. I don't in my regular use scenarios. Plus, energy and heat used to create the ice cubes makes the effort not really net positive.
